A bit of sleuthing about a mysterious board game patent. What is it? Jenkins' Patented Peg Game!
Переглядів 42721 годину тому
I stumbled upon a board game patent a while back and decided to do some research. Homer H. Jenkins, humble telegrapher for the Southern Pacific Railroad, invented a board game - and here's the story. Well... as much as I could figure out. (Nothing on Board Game Geek either.)
Holiday gift-giving on your mind? Here's obvious suggestion: Board games, card games & peg games!

I felt compelled to jump on this Black Friday bandwagon in some form, so here's my contribution to the frenzy. Games do make great gifts, of that there's no doubt. I suggest that they'll fit into Christmas stockings, but there are many more possibilities. For those folks on your list that are hard to buy for, or to provide an idea for a gift-giving theme this year - why not games? Every year we...

Congratulations to the new Togyz Komalak World Champions!

No matter how you spell it, this looks like a terrific game. Obviously a member of the mancala category, but this one is from south-central Asia - Kazakhstan, to be exact. TogysKumalak, Tigusqumulaq, Tugys Komulak, or even Tugys Korgul... the competition was fierce between over 100 players from 14 different nations! The basics are the same as other mancala-style games: Take up beads and sow the...
Turns out this is not a new idea: the game board shrinks as you play! It's "Tuknanavuhpi."
Переглядів 825Місяць тому
It's not Forbidden Island (Gamewright, 2010) - the island is not sinking. But, as rows and columns are emptied, they become off limits to the players! Tuknanavuhpi come from the Hopi indians in southwestern North America. Not much is known about its history - any mention I could find in reference works or Wiki sites is very brief. (It's all in the video.) Regardless of the fogginess of the game...
Discover Japanese history through board games? It's Sugoroku!
Переглядів 479Місяць тому
It's been a great privilege to work with collector and author Norman Brosterman on his latest publication: "From Shogun to Godzilla - A Graphic Gameboard History of Modern Japan." Within its pages are nearly a hundred gameboards spanning over 150 years of Sugoroku - a form of board game with roots that are centuries older. These are generally race games not too far removed from the Game of Goos...

AfrikanTahti? Who knew?

This is probably the most popular game I never heard of, but that might be a bit presumptuous. There may be a lot of million-sellers I never heard of. But this one's been around for over 70 years (and so have I)! The players are moving about on a map of Africa which is criss-crossed with land routes and air routes, and there are a few sea routes around the coast as well. They're looking for the...

BOO! You have that, haven't you? This is a tale of a deadly dare, as in "You don't dare run through this graveyard on the spookiest night of the year!" It's basically a card-driven race game for 2 to 4 players, but there's plenty more to it than just a flip-and-move. Each player has a set of six special modifier cards, and as you play they get used up. But when you've used all six, they magical...

nunca habia pensado en juegos modernos inspirados en los 3 mosqueteros pero definitivamente ese juego abstracto se lleva el interes, voy a probarlo
Interesting win conditions. But the musketeers look like they have the advantage.
These videos are really high quality. Really appreciate how well edited these reviews are. Thank you for the historical information.
My dad made me this game for Christmas!! Thank you for the great instructions!! We are so excited to play! Merry Christmas :)
It's a simple and nice strategy game for two people. Great! 😄
Cool vid!
The game sounds great.
ahora necesito unas lecciones sobre como buscar patentes en especial en otros países porque seguramente hay otros juegos que falta encontrar. Excelente video y definitivo que probare el juego esta navidad
I'm always looking for suggestions. You're doing a great job. Keep up the good work!
When you showed the board, it reminded me of Chinese Checkers only a smaller version of it!
There’s a great board game cafe in Branson!
New peg game video!
Cool. Sid Saxon, I believe, found the game "Blues & Greys" while searching through old patents. It hadn't been published till he found it. I wonder how many games have been patented, but left unpublished. Merry Christmas! Jesus loves you!
Blue & Grey is on my list of videos to produce for 2025!
Just wanted to say that i love your work and videos.
Many thanks!
I want to say me too but I'm waiting to times come when I am able to understand English better just for your videos sir 😢😊
Dear David, my father (born 1937 in Normandy) always had a game like that at home (the book shelf type giver to the troops): he was given it by an American soldier in the summer of 1944 after the d-day landings in my home area. I had always looked for information about it, wrote to specialized websites, veterans associations, but to no avail. Then last spring after years searching the web I came across your fascinating video. I showed it to my secondary school students on June 6th and let them play with the game. Very moving. My late father would have appreciated. Thanks for everything ! The web can be a very good thing indeed ! Denis
That is a wonderful story, Denis - Glad I could be a part of it. Games can be a great bridge between cultures and generations. Thanks for sharing.
Ancent monopoly
Yes, in two ways: (1) It seemed to have been insanely popular, and (2) it wasn't a really such a great game. 🙂

@@rogerbarreto8420 solo? I thought it was a 2 player only!
This game is huge in Finland. All American homes have Monopoly. All Finnish homes have Monopoly and Afrikan tähti. And they both suck!
Great research, the passion for games 🥰
Namaste sir 🙏 super glad to found this video, may I hv your email id or contact number?
It's on the website.
That is Mohele. Not Morabaraba.
Interesting! Where are you located? Most games have a number of different names, depending on where they are played.
David, Here's a idea to kick around: You could post board game trivia and fun facts on the community section of the NewVentureGames UA-cam Channel.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into it.
Thank you for this. I've recently become interested in ancient games (pre-1600) and it seems many of our resources overlap. I'll be checking out some of the other books you recommended.
Splendid - glad I could help. Do you have any favorite resources that I did not mention?
@@NewVentureGames One book that I find very helpful that I didn't see in your slideshow of resources is "History of Board Games" by David Parlett (formerly published as "The Oxford History of Board Games."
@@TheGamingBench2024 I have that. I purchased a used copy with no dust cover, so it's just a plain black book. Not very "visual." ;-)>
13 Stockings? That's a lot of oranges 🙂
This game is available on Boardgame geek. There is a long list of traders that have the game on the trade market. Also…. In 2022, the company Mindware released this game as Klondice. The game has golden dice and a dice tower that looks like a mountain. The tier is made on cardboard and must be put together each time the game is played. The theme is that the players are trying to strike it rich by collecting the most gold.
Hey - thanks for the Klondice reference! I hadn't seen that one. Very shiny!
i picked up a copy of sharpshooters at a thrift store for a couple of bucks a while ago without knowing anything about it. when i opened it when i got home my brother in law and i were baffled and astounded by the sheer amount of dice. truly bonkers. i dont have a lot of time on it but i absolutely love how it plays. thanks for covering it :)
I was going to cover this, now I don’t have to!
I love dice games, but missed this game when it was first published. Sounds like a very good one indeed!
Wow! That is an impressive collection of games! Have you played all of them?
Ha ha ha! No, indeed. In fact, there are probably more un-played than played. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few dozen still in shrink wrap!
😁👍
Let's be reminded this is based on pure assumption. I think we should be close to the truth if we factor in the philosophy of Egypt. First is Egypt a competitive society. Is the game intented to defeat/conquer or share. Have you noticed the pieces are not the same for both players? And pharaoh has the superior piece which of course may have some advantages. In my opinion it looks like a game that give the Pharaoh the power to civilize neighboring people in the hope of making the world a better place. To conclude look at the seal of Egypt offering life or life, and juxtapose that to the American seal, peace or war.
Indeed. Thanks for the comments!

Please do manufacture a nice version of this game! ❤

You are correct.
When I first heard of Mancala, I was told it was a Nigerian game. So I asked my Nigerian friend if he played it as a kid. "Yes" he replied, "the game teaches you how to cheat"
😁👍
I'm about your age and I definitely remember the "Flying Fickle Finger Of Fate." 😄
Thank you!
It sounds like a pretty cool game. At a glance, the name looked pretty Finnish to my (not-Finnish) eyes.
Wonderful game! Congratulations!
Interesting mechanism.
A very interesting game. Just one question, at 4:07 should the third row (beginning from the top) be blocked since all places are free? Regards from Switzerland
No, because it's not the "outermost" row. Unless you're playing Tuknanawopi (with a "w"). That variant, especially with the diagonals, is quite different.
😁👍
Very informative! Thank you!
The nostalgia of the old games and memories of playing them with family was irreplaceable. People can play the modern alternative games but I'm old school with card and board games.
Are these games still available and if so, where can I purchase them on line?
Visit our website - the link is in the description: newventuregames.com !
Maybe the Library of Alexandria probably had those documents on those ancient board games on how it was played but was burned down. Just a theory.
I notice the peg's heads are big that may not fit 2 pegs if they are placed at its closest distance between 2 holes next to each other. I think historians had not made any ideas for this scenario. Do you think there's a rule if 2 pegs are at its closest when the original players used it in the past?
Play long and roll them. ^_^
