Cold start, first time being started in about 2 months. If you start daily usually started in 3-4 kicks if u don't get caught up on compression like I did a few times.
You need to follow the starting procedure or you're going to break the kick start shaft. Do you have the decompression cable working too? Very important! When you use the starting procedure, the bike is very easy to start but it must be followed. Google it or get back to me, I own one. Cheers
Is the starting procedure in the maintenance manual? I just picked up an SP500 with a (surprise) broken kick starter, not the shaft though. Once that is repaired I assume you pull in the compression release and push the kick starter slowly until the compression release handle releases (this is TDC) then start? Thanks!
You need to get the decompression valve and lever working. Then, with it lightly pulled on,, slowly crank the engine over until you feel it on the compression stroke as it approaches TDC. Then re-pull the decompression lever in and it should stay pulled in on its own. Then pull the kick starter up to the top and give it a full kick. It should not be difficult to kick over using this method. Replacing your kick starter recoil spring or other bits is not difficult, just remove the right side engine cover. You can also use the decompression lever pulled in to either prime the engine or vent it if its flooded. Let me know how you make out. Cheers,

Dude. That thing looks like it has huge compression. I'd so love to hop on the seat after you get that beast kickstarted and sit on her while she warms up... and I feel it thumping beneath me :)

ygkpilot i have the same bike , i use decompression lever before ever kick , and it's start after 1-3 kick.
lol , both the DR500s I have owned were usually first kick start even when cold , sweet ass machine they are
