Great video.. when performing VLM using OP unit, you really need to use more pads then in this video to avoid smearing dirt, usually around 3 pads both sides per room for these size rooms . Also the all cotton pad sucks up more dirt faster then the blended pad used in the video. Keep using the OP unit though, and more ways to use it come to light wile use it, just like any other tools in the trade. 🖖😃
"need to use more pads" Same thought I had when seeing this method decades ago. I started with an Advance dry foam machine with a built in air compressor and a horizontal revolving brush.. It did a beautiful job. But I always wondered where the dirt went. Then I realized it was just spreading it out evenly! LOL! When deep shag carpet became popular, extraction was required. Then I could see where the dirt went. I often empty some of the rinse water into a glass and show the customers where their filth went!
Also, I did a test way back after first using the OP machine. I use my TM thermal wave with #5 blower and did full steam clean, then went over it with my Trinity Spider to poll out more moisture, and MAN ! I could believe how much dirt the Spider still pulled out. The Trinity OP units just kill it hands down. 🙌

We as carpet cleaners need to work smarter! 1. Use a nice safe, non toxic pre-conditioner (I use one), wear a mask while applying, use a bigger spray jet. Also can use a small rotary with tank to apply & power scrub your precondition with. 2. Increase your flow on your wand to put out more water with less steam into atmosphere, this will also flush out more soil. I dont know how else to say it but slow down on your triggered pass, you're flushing & extracting. Of course a 2" tube wand. I love my Challenger and it's still rocking after over 20 years. I've done the same challenge you have but get less soil on my pads with my system. My wand has a flow of 16 and I run at 600 psi. I know you're trying to justify VLM to yourself to go with it, I did the same over 20 years ago. It lasted 2 years because I was honest with myself. One day I did a vlm job on a turquoise carpet, cleaned around sectional as requested by customer. Challenger didnt get under lip of sectional and customer asked if I could catch that after I packed it all up. Ran my hose in and used upholstery tool. Horrifically I left a very bright turquoise line under the lip of sofa that stood out. So, brought in the wand. First thing I did was make an X in the middle of that room and guess what? Had to do the entire home all over again. This is hard to digest for anyone that has convinced themselves that VLM cleans. You got to define "clean", you got to figure out how to accomplish that. If you can convince yourself applying Davies cleaner onto a carpet that has blood, vomit, urine, feces, bacteria and everything else on it, and a wet cotton towel will remove all that then check your morals. No way I'm letting pets or kids on that. Sure you did get some dirty pads but is it "clean"? Use water pads and change pads every 5'x5', you'll clean a little better. Flush & rinse with higher flow, slow down on the cleaning pass ( everyone resists this but think about what's going on at the carpet at jet area), angle your jets and put them closer to the carpet (only if you angle them) and your steam stays in the carpet but then you extract it, killing more bacteria.
Carpet cleaning can severely damage your health! After 53 years of it, at 74 I can't jump as high as I used to. I run slower too! (Actually I don't run anywhere now!) I watch my grandson do it!
Prespraying is an important part of any carpet cleaning method. It begins to loosen and suspend the soil so it can be extracted. As for the wand, yes it sprays pressurized hot water and sucks it up but there's more to it than that. I rinse with hot water only. Some cleaners run an alkaline detergent through their rinse water to make cleaning a little quicker but it's going to leave some residue which will sometimes cause the carpet to resoil faster. Other cleaners run an acid rinse through their rinse water to lower the overall pH of the carpet. Some cleaners will just bring in the wand and hoses and start extracting. While the carpet may "look" good and it saves time, it's not the proper way to clean and it shortchanges the customer.
@@AllAmericanMack So does OB leave less or no residue? Also does the carpet feel the same to the touch (soft) either HWE or OB? I have felt some that feel filmy. Thanks again.
All methods are going to leave *some* residue but the problem lies more in the amount of it and the pH of the residue. For example, the product I clean with has a pH of 9.2 and I dillute it down even further to prespray with so let's say it's at 8.5. If I HWE with just plain, hot water at a nominal pH of 7, the carpet will be left at a pH somewhere between there, maybe at 7.7 pH. That's not really going to contribute to any significant rapid resoiling. Even if I OP the carpet, I'm removing the bulk of the moisture, soil, and prespray so the carpet will be left in a similar state.... one that won't get dirty any faster than it should. If I were to use the same prespray *plus* run an alkiline detergent through my rinse water, it will leave more of both in the carpet because I would be trying to rinse an alkiline with another alkiline and this is one thing that can cause stiff carpets with HWE. Some really high pH presprays like 12-14 pH do need an acid rinse to help remove them during extraction but modetate presprays in the 9-10 pH range can be removed easily with just water and won't leave film or stiff carpets as long as they're rinsed properly. I've personally never noticed any difference on carpets that I've used HWE or OP on, they are always soft after cleaning but shoddy cleaning with any method can cause stiff carpets. Also most people who clean using OP or any low moisture method are using encapsulation which are filled with polymers and that may contribute to stiff or filmy feeling carpets.
Remember that TACT is involved in all cleaning: TIME, Agitation, Chemicals, Temperature. Each one plays a part and each can be varied depending on the soil condition. I can just wipe off a plate that had potato chips on it. But a plate with dried mashed potatoes will take a lot more strategic TACT.

Yes, it's an issue sometimes. Most customers are familiar with steam cleaning so many of them just expect it and some don't want anything but steam cleaning while others don't really care how I clean. I find it easier to just steam clean most residential jobs because if the customer is skeptical of the vlm process from the beginning, they get it in their head that steam cleaning would have done even better. I only vlm apartments because I'm not stringing hoses through stairwells up several stories and they tend to not really care which method I use. For commercial it's usually not an issue either.
Nice video man! Definitely would recommend to get a crb for low moisture cleaning those are the best for that process. And I agree your always gonna get soil from either method!

Neither method really did better than the other in my opinion. Both left a small amount of soil in the carpet, but not enough that it would be an issue. I would be comfortable with someone using either method on my own carpet.
If you're referring to methyl ethyl ketone, then it's likely stripping color out of the carpet where you use it so the area you cleaned will be lighter or maybe the rest of the carpet just needs to be cleaned. Proper carpet cleaning methods (including both methods shown in the video) do a great job of cleaning carpet and there isn't a better way for wall to wall carpet. If it was practical to detach carpeting and wash it in pit the same way high end rugs are cleaned, then yes, we technically remove more soil, but it just isn't doable in the real world and the extremely small difference in soil removal isn't worth it. I had a customer call me to clean a few rooms of carpet. In one of the rooms, the carpet was a pinkish color. I noticed what I thought was heavy filtration soiling (dark lines at the edges of the carpet) around the baseboards. After I was done cleaning, the customer expressed some concern about the dark lines and also some areas under a desk. As it turns out, she had been using bleach in a home steam vac type of cleaner and bleached the carpet from brown to the pinkish color. The dark lines weren't soil at all, they were the original color of the carpet and since here machine wouldn't get all the way up against the baseboards, it wasn't bleached there. Same thing under the desk. She didn't believe me at first so I lifted the matress and box springs on the bed so she could clearly see the where she had not been using the machine was the original brown color. I've also had the same thing happen on very worn carpets that are past their prime. Most cleaners use citrus gel or POG to remove things like chewing gum, grease stains, paint, etc. Using it on carpet in good shape is not a problem but on worn carpet it can leave a spot lighter than the rest. It's not that the spot is cleaner, it just removed some color. Same thing sometimes happens with red stain removers.
@@AllAmericanMack I'm sorry man but you don't clean well. It's all about the wand and your technique. I went the same way over 20 years ago from HWE to OP. Then I learned how to choose a wand and how to wand. I had to, too many complaints of custys with dirty socks after I OP cleaned and I used about 15-20 pads per home. If you put out enough water, extract it, put out enough water to rinse it, extract it, all in much sloooowwwweeeeerrrrr passes you will see almost perfection. Carpet cleaners tend to speed up the longer they do this, they don't get better but worse at cleaning. This is why you gravitate to smoke & mirror cleaning by spinning a pad over the carpet full of your chemical, bacteria, pet urine, blood, vomit and the rest. It looks better so you assume it's better because it was easier. If you re-think what you are doing, you will figure it out
you are correct, steam doesn't extract all the dirt as many claim that is because steam doesn't extract at all. Steam is the by-product of hot water. Someone came up with a nice false marketing term and ran with it. We as Vlm'ers shoud really stop calling it steam cleaning altogether and call it for what it actually is.
"NO HOSES!!" and less liability from wall damage or tripping. Also the ability to lock your van up and yourself into businesses after hours, etc. I have caught some would-be thieves casing my van while I was cleaning 200 feet away.@@AllAmericanMack
I agree that would have been ideal but because the waste tank water level was so low, I had to keep the hose on the ground for it to drain. In hindsight, I should have brought the pvc pipe, it would have been easier and I could have used the bucket with that.
You're wanding to fast and probably using a wand that blast dirt straight down into carpet. Try a wand with jets at 45° angle, use bigger jets with a flow of no less than 8. Do slower wet passes and slower dry passes. One thing for sure is your water from the 1st clean after the OP clean had alot of the chemical residue you would have left behind for the customer. If you were just a VLM'r you would have used more & wetter pads per room to rinse out as much chem as possible. Then you'd leave it as wet as if you TM'd it
@@melaniespaur405 this just goes to show you that you don't know what you're talking about! It's polyester carpet, pre-spray sent all that crap to the bottom. The jets on that wand point straight down instead of at a 45 that help send more crap to the bottom. The passes are typical of most carpet cleaners - too fast, because most carpet cleaners don't see the big picture. Those passes just compact the dirt and extract some, too much being left behind with those quick passes. This is why VLM is more suited for guys that understand the simple concept of cleaning.
If you re-think what you are doing, you will figure it out
Steam doesn't extract all the dirt as many claim. VLM is totally the way to go.
And that's one of the reasons I'm moving to VLM. As good or better cleaning and NO HOSES!!!
@@AllAmericanMack good for you!!!!!😊💖
you are correct, steam doesn't extract all the dirt as many claim that is because steam doesn't extract at all.
Would have emptied that in a bucket
I agree that would have been ideal but because the waste tank water level was so low, I had to keep the hose on the ground for it to drain. In hindsight, I should have brought the pvc pipe, it would have been easier and I could have used the bucket with that.
I don't ever wanna smell that smell I smelt that day
Reading all the comments, I bet RD and Gary m get all the biz in their area 🙄. Lol fricking clowns.
You need a work house vac. Buy America.

Then you'd leave it as wet as if you TM'd it
He actually used a good wand. VLM doesn't have as many issues as steam.
And he's not wanting too fast, boy knows his stuff!!
I mean, c'mon, dude walked into a room with a single pad to clean it. Any cleaner that thinks would understand that will just cross contaminate. Yes, I use vlm too, 26 years of cleaning, I see the big picture
Buy yourself a respirator (not masks).
