    When I started, I hated the Guardian set, both aesthetically and functionally. SO I ended up actually building sets. I felt SO bad at first, begging (gently asking) my friends if we could grind Great Girros for parts because I thought that set looked cool. Fashion Hunting aside, I hate playing a game that's too easy for a stone cold beginner scrub like I was. So I ended up wearing that HR Great Girros through my first Elder Dragons. It made Vaal Hazak easy because I accidentally had miasma resistance maxed, but that felt great because I learned *why* he was easy... and that's just a lesson in how to play the game that I would have missed if I'd been wearing the Guardian set.

      This! Wearing guardian set would rob new players off this kind of cool "a-ha" moment. And that'd be such a shame.

      I played through the first time and just did whatever I could to get to Fatalis as soon as possible so I could help my brother farm gear. Afterward, I went back and farmed sets from scratch, from low rank to high rank to master rank. I basically treated the defender run as an intro to the monster movesets, and the normal run as the actual experience

    After 4 years of not playing, and then switching to PC instead of console, I was very thankful for the guardian set so that I could get through the main game quickly. Already had over 400 hours on Xbox so I couldn’t bring myself to grind through the main story again.

      Yea the guardian set is so great for that scenario.

  • @brightbound3309

    if you're a new player avoid the guardian set like the plague it will get you into a bad gameplay habit of not bothering to position better or use your role to reposition out of an attack while the monster is winding up (and don't even try to dark souls it world has like 1 i frame)
    if you are a returning player starting a new save file and just want to get to the end of hr and to mr use them although it's still a very good idea to look at what you're going to use at those later levels and upgrade weapons accordingly it saves you a massive chunk of grind all at one time

    I'm brand new as of a week ago, and my preference for fashion over function must have saved me because I took one look at this set and never looked at it again. There is a Defender Insect Glaive I've been using the entire game (for lack of a cooler look) but I just spotted the awesome and sleek Odogoron Insect Glaive and am working to it. What a fun and awesome game. I'm glad I didn't wear this set and could feel the gift of getting one shot by Diablos lmao.

    lol funny thing I had no idea defender armor/weapons were "skip early game" sets and restarted my 17 hour save from the very beginning (MHW is my first MH game)

  • @finikksu
    @finikksu 4 місяці тому +2

    As a player whose first MH was World and started with the Defender Armor and Weapon I agree with some of your points. But also I feel it helped me stay with the game longer, let me explain.
    Early quests I got hit a lot because I was still trying to learn the controls and "feel" of the game, and I'm sure if not for Defender I would have carted and failed many quests. MHW at least compared to other games I play is heavier and using an attack requires comitment as you need to stay in place to use it, and cannot simply change directions easily. So being able to get the flow of the gameplay with a safety net as Defender helped me a lot.
    Defender weapon also helped me feel attacks had weight due to the high damage they dealt, and most importantly made early quests a bit quicker.
    I can imagine if I was doing small damage and taking a lot early on, to the point of failing a quest I had spend close to an hour into, in a game I'm still not fully sold to, I would have been frustrated and maybe quit. But thanks to having that safety net and being able to take out monsters a bit quicker when you commit to a hunt (I clearly remember failing to hunt a Barroth because I was playing too pasively and it just left).
    After a while I did get a good feeling of the game and felt comfortable, mostly thanks to going out on expeditions and hunting everything in there, Defender may reduce the damage but you will eventually go down anyways if you don't heal during too long so during those long expeditions I did had to learn dodges and healing, and once I did, I ditched Defender armor on my own (because I found it ugly) and managed to keep playing just fine because I already knew the basics at that point. I did kept the Defender weapon until Master Rank tho.
    So while I do agree Defender may give new players a screwed perspective of the game due to making it easier, It also may help some enter safely into a game or genre they may not know.

      Absolutely right, also I did just like you people just comparing one side "you have to consider both sides " like you said it helps a new player a lot to understand the game more. For now, until he learns a little

    I gotta be honest, but I actually really appreciate the guardian set as a new player, I get it makes you a tank but the thing is it helps me learn move sets and enemy attack patterns without having to fail a quest, also, while it can let me be reckless, it honestly has made me more comfortable to learn the best positions and ways to dodge enemy attacks because I’m not as worried on fainting, overall it’s good armor for learning how to be better at the game in my opinion, like training wheels

    I beat most of the base game with guardian armor and defender weapons.
    Then I used event armor that was better than guardian. I switched to using better armor for Iceborne.
    Doesn't matter what you use as long as you have fun.

    Yeah, I reached Master again today after 4 years of not playing and used the guardian gear and felt really disconnected from the game play loop and discouraged from experimenting because it felt like I was being punished for grinding for the stuff I wanted to make.

    • @savepointID
      @savepointID  8 місяців тому

      Yup. MH games wouldn't be as good without that gameplay loop (hunting -> experimenting ->getting steam-rolled -> more hunting & experimenting)

    With the Guardian Armor, Capcom really stepped into a puddle with socks. It's cool if an experienced player uses it to rush through base world to IB (especially those who came to PC from PS4 like me and have seen it all before). But for new players, it's a trap the game doesn't tell them about, that can end in a rude awakening come Master Rank.
    There's already been a 'scrub-boosting' issue in prior games where bored G rank (old name of Master Rank) players come into low lobbies and carry people who have no idea how to play the game - leading to a heavy influx of these people with terrible mix sets and no armor skills (or actual mechanical skill) in high G rank. And teaching them on a 3ds screen or Wii U gamepad is difficult compared to a keyboard.
    It makes me wish capcom would incorporate a single wall monster into the game you have to solo. Similar to low rank Monoblos in frontier - you HAVE to hunt him alone and one of my 'New World' friends actually got stuck on it till he learned. Personally I got walled twice in MHFU which was my first game, once by Shen Gaoren in low rank, and then later at the end by Rajang for a whole damn month. I was 11 at the time. Nowadays I'd probably lack some of the patience I had back then.

    • @savepointID
      @savepointID  7 місяців тому

      Ah yeah we can basically multiplayer all of the quests in MHW. Thus making it "easier" to get carried.

    • @Miguel_Macias1

      MHFU was also my first game! My walls were low rank tigrex and then G rank naracuga, they were the ones that taught me how to get good!

    This is the number one tip. Do NOT use the guardian armor. It robs you of so much fun in slowly improving yourself as a character. MH characters do not level up like a normal RPG characters, your armor progression is what the game is about.

      Which is why I'm not sticking with it for very long.
      That said, it's legit better than whatever I got and all I was able to gain is bits of Kulu Ya Ku and Great Jagras.
      And *_nonnaats_* gonna do shit at the early game where I'm still at and I only recently got as far as my first Barroth

  • @wolfitoh7981

    I weared it in low rank, and dropped it for Odogaron set and then Rathian set. Tbh, low rank sets are garbage, its probably the worst sets to progress throght low rank in the saga. Like, I know the point its just crafting new sets and all, but thats why Rise just improved that giving actual good ammount of point skills in low rank. I think guardian armor wouldnt be needed if the amount of points of the skills were acceptable.
