I remember watching this with my family when I was twelve. I remember blurting out “oh no he’s going to Hulk out in his sleep.” Our eyes were glued to the screen and no one said a word when he opened his eyes. Such a well done suspenseful & scary scene. Goes to show don’t need hundreds of millions of dollars to make a quality movie or show.
I was 12 years old too, my Dad and I both were into seeing Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk, so was my Mom. My sister who was 3 years younger than me I never knew what she thought about the show, guess as a 9 year old girl, hero shows wasn't her thing other than Wonder Woman and The Bionic Woman.

Very frightening scene. David's hand shaking and the lighting.. brilliant acting and everything. I felt so bad for David. One part of me wanted him to find a cure, then I didn't want him to be cured.😅Great episode, brilliant series👍🏻
This was so much more than just a “super hero show.” There was a very human element in the storytelling and the acting, especially that of Bill Bixby. This clip never fails to get me.
I think that's what made the pilot and "Married" so compelling. The stress levels that triggered the transformations were always through the roof. That nightmare sequence was particularly terrifying.
I put the 3rd transformation behind the 1st transformation of this 2 part episode. Both were scary...but the 1st transformation....I didn't see it coming.
Don't forget that there was also another nightmare sequence in the episode called Homecoming where in the episode David hulks out in front of his sister. He was having a nightmare about his mother dying.
I loved the symbolism in the desert that Hulk was walking and behind Banner, showing the Hulk part of David will always follow and shadow him until he can find a cure
This is the worst type of nightmare to have, losing a family member, partner or best friend. I had a nightmare like this before and I couldn’t sleep for the rest of the night. Heck when I opened my eyes I felt like I had the hulk eyes after experiencing that 😳😳
The way the transformation kicks in is arguably the best of the series. You hear the Hulkout sound accompanied by the choir. Then when she looks he makes a little growl sound. Love it. Top 5, top 3 minimum.
The transformation soundtrack was a mixture of the original transformation soundtrack and the soundtrack they decided to go with about midway into Season 1.

@@welcometogreenaquasglen1846Can you imagine a woman being married to a guy who becomes a Mr. Hyde when being attacked by bad guys or having nightmares?
This was probably the only Hulk out that crept me out as a kid. The fact that it was the middle of the night and Carol wakes to see David transforming before her eyes. Add that in with the fact that David looks helplessly paralyzed in the moment as the Hulk takes over his body
Yeah, the only scene where I understand that Carolyn is very scared in front of Hulk, because he's without control, probably scared by nightmare and angry! Then, when he goes close to her, bending the bars of the bed, roaring! 😮 I was scared too at Carolyn place! Lou Ferrigno is also fantastic in this scene: how he makes Hulk terrifying! This big man snarling in the room, with only the moonlight on his shoulders... the threatening look... Very Great Bill to be scared and Lou to be frightening!

I 100% agree, I had a great childhood and this show was a huge part of it. I could watch this series all over again and enjoy it just as much as I did in 1977-1982.
Watching Bixby turn green instead of Lou was very terrifying. I was scared to death of the Hulk as a child. Bill & Lou were impeccable as the 2 halves of Dr. David Banner.
You're not mistaken. These versions of the Hulkout sounds were only used in "Married" and I've always felt that this version of the sound fit the story perfectly.
It just dawned on me.....David in his sleep felt at peace to the point where it LOOKED like it was possible for Banner and the Hulk to co-exist, if not work together at SOME point within the therapy in his dream. There seemed to be a feeling of serenity for David as long as he and Carolyn was close.....but once Carolyn moved away from David in her sleep David's life became sad and miserable....compounded by the fact that Carolyn is dying (the fact that she physically burned up David's liquid chemo drink while saving a boy from drowning didn't help. An interesting point....in the beginning of the episode Carolyn was focused on saving her life while David was willing to sacrifice his need for curing if not control the Hulk in order to help save, if not prolong her life...but after saving the boy....Carolyn risked her longevity to save the kid's life while David only cared about Carolyn - understandably if you were in his position). Anyway..back to the dream....once Carolyn in her sleep removed herself from Banner.....David's life became once again sad. He lost his first wife....fell in love again with a woman whose intelligence and skillset meshes with David's.....only to watch her die in his dream and can't do anything about it.....except HULK OUT OF HIS NIGHTMARE.
