This pilot alone set the tone and bar for the character of Dr. David Banner. What's impressive is that the episode is not just about the origin of the Incredible Hulk but a real emotional human drama about a man who is in conflict with himself, who had everything and lost everything. Making it grounded in reality. Also, the whole suspense to this sequence feels less like a superhero movie and more like supernatural horror film.

By the way, in one shot that has the Hulk looking up the tree, the overhead shot of the Hulk is actually Richard Kiel, the original actor who was supposed to play the character. So, even in this very early encounter, the Hulk is already showing the side of his compassion and concern, especially when it comes to little children.

@@eq1373 correct, during it's heyday the series was the most expensive too produce. Most shows of the time like Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century used stock footage in their battles. With the hulk, the special effects and the makeups used on Bixby and Ferrigno were costly. So they would usually go overbudget, it hurt them alot because they couldn't afford big name stars like Carry Grant, Elizabeth Montgomery, both big fans of the show. I could of seen Montgomery as Elaina Marks in the pilot. Or as Doctor Caroline Fields in the 2 hour, second season premiere, Married. Both she and Bixby were on the same game shows of the 70s. So they had great chemistry together.
Wow! What a nostalgic pleasure to see this again. The beauty of this is excellent casting of Bill Bixby as Dr David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk. Great music score and visual effects. The most important factor for me is, no CGI effects. Just natural good directing, good casting, good visual effects and good story. No need for cartoon like GCI rubbish. Good old 80s tv. What a great time to be a kid, ha!
Hey just to let ya know if you want to see the whole series again they have it out on d.v.d. I should know I have the entire box set of all 4 seasons of the show and I also agree it was great seeing again I grew up watching this show back in the 80's watching Dr. Banner try to find a cure for what was happening to him and always trying to stay out of trouble though sadly trouble always had a habit of finding him though with that huge bounty Magee put on him didn't help matters as I remember in one episode this guy who was like a big game hunter or a mercenary wanted to kill the Hulk for over a million dollars.
The pilot episode has always fantastic. This is how David's life as the Hulk began. After losing his wife Laura due to his lack of strength to remove her from the burning car she was in, he was determined to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have. However David's impatience and an overdose of Gamma Radiation cost him greatly. David's first transformation into the Hulk was awesome. 👍
Banner and Dr Marks we're interviewing people who had experienced unexplained phenomena of excessive strength during times of stress. Banner later learned that with each of these incidents, there was high levels of gamma radiation present. However, on the day of the car accident with his wife, there was low gamma activity. This is what led to his experimenting on himself by taking a gamma injection. When he went into the gamma lab, his original intent was to only take an injection of 300,000 units. But the machine wasn't calibrated properly, and he ended up taking an injection of 2 million units. It was this overdose that led to his metamorphosis
This 1st change scared the hell of me as a kid! The transformation from banner to hulk was classic! The best change was always when banner change while flying the plane in 747 main event stuff!
I remember that episode. And the fact that he was actually scared to the point of panic. Remember it's extreme emotions that trigger the transformation. Whether it be anger or fear or extreme sadness. There was a time where he went up against another guy who was an evil version of the hulk. And he had the antidote to his cure. And he destroyed it so that way nobody can get it including Dr banner. David was filled with extreme rage and sadness at the same time because he felt his only hope was gone and that's when he transformed and battled that evil version of the hulk. Look it up sometime.
As a child of the 70s, I was a big fan! I loved the comic book and this show just took things to a whole other level. True, there was no Abomination or Thunderbolt Ross but the show had a more “realistic”, psychological approach to the subject matter. Bill Bixby just made the show. He was amazing and you had so much sympathy for poor, cursed David Banner. I distinctly remember being almost moved to tears on a number of occasions. Classic!
The show always took itself seriously and not tongue in cheek. The few shows where they brought in another "creature" (remember Thor?) were fun but nearly as dramatic and therefore moving.
@@1950Grendel I remember the episode with the “other Hulk”. I believe it was a two parter and involved an older man who had the same affliction. His personality was decidedly darker than Banner, thus his Hulk was a lot more savage and deadly. The man actually enjoyed it! I remember how disturbing that creature was…more realistic than an Abomination from the comic book.
Incredible scene. So little dialog yet it leaves you completely captivated. Getting to see the first transformation in such a methodical way was brilliant
Here in the UK this was the first ever instance myself and my mates knew of the Hulk back in the 70's. I remember the older lads talking about watching a new TV show where this man smashes through a wall. Lo and behold we were introduced to the Hulk!!!. This TV version always stayed with me especially the music for the closing credits.
Great opening hulkout, couldn't been better. The music amping up the tension along with Bill's perfectly timed acting of frustration due to changing the tire is superb. And Lou's imposing physique ripping the shirt and turning over the car made for a great Incredible hulk pilot!!
My dad grew up on this show as a kid. I'm 17 years old and I also love this show. I always consider Lou Forigno as The Incredible Hulk and Bill Bixby as David Banner
7:50 television history is made 🤑 My late grandfather (a Hulk fan himself) always taped every episode of this show when it was rerun in syndication and we’d watch it together every Sunday I went over to his house for years; he’s the reason I became a fan of the Hulk in the first place Since then, I’ve read Greg Pak’s PLANET HULK & WORLD WAR HULK comics (and its subsequent spin-off comics FRONT LINE, GAMMA CORPS, INCREDIBLE HERCULES, WARBOUND, AND DAMAGE CONTROL) and the first seven volumes of Jeph Loeb & Ed McGuinness’ (who I met at the 2013 Boston Comicon) RED HULK series (RED HULK, RED & GREEN, HULK NO MORE, HULK VS. X-FORCE, FALL OF THE HULKS, WORLD WAR HULKS, & SCORCHED EARTH)
Lou was especially ripped in the pilot. More-so than the later episodes. When the opportunity to do the Hulk came along, Lou was in the middle of training for the next Mr. Olympia competition. So he was in peak condition, and it showed.
This was quite possibly the scariest thing to watch as a 5 year old. Nothing like watching a calm mild-mannered man go from being just that to being an eight-foot-tall not so Jolly Green Giant.
I think the idea of roadside assistance was thought about after ppl saw dis episode and it became pretty clear we all could use the Hulk or at least someone to help out when a stupid car breaks down in the middle of a road during a lightning storm! Brilliant! 😅😃☺
I didn't grow up in the 70s but I had this on DVD and when I saw this I was terrified, this just goes to show how good this show was that as a kid in the early 2000s it left an impact on me.
There were some highs and some lows I this series but the pilot episode is actually superb! Bill Bixby was the reason for the series success appealing to a sided audience than just kids
@@alfulci6914 Unfortunately, as great as Lou Ferrigno is, he's no longer credible as the Hulk when playing him physically. CGI is the only way to do the Hulk justice.
I never missed an episode Friday nights on CBS. I was often chastised for watching a live action superhero show. Who knew many years later I would get to meet one of my heroes Liu Ferrigno. He is a kind and soft spoken individual. I have run into him at Comic-cons and it was so great when he remembered me. This and the Spiderman show thrilled me in my youth. It gave me the strength to realize mo matter how much I was bullied that after a confrontation I learned to get back to and press on.
Banner was inpatient by tapping into the hidden strengths. Now he got a mutation. Near the main center of his brain. Now whenever he becomes angered or screech of hormone, he becomes a mutant thing. A beast untill that rage ends. Use to luv the Hulk when I was a kid🤣🤣🤣

I totally grew up on this show.
You shouldn't need the show to know not to do it. Dr. Banner and every other scientist out there would do well to heed the warning in the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story!
I was 10 years old when I watched this on my parents wood panelled 36" TV ..... and I remember being transfixed as Dr. Banner bends the tire-iron and flips the car... I know as an impressionable kid this show, .this scene specifically, gave me goosebumps and I was hooked. Even today as I rewatch this episode, I have to admit ..... for the early 80's, they did this first transformation of the Hulk.. brilliantly. Sure do miss those 80's and 90's..
Will, you took the words right out of my mouth. I was and am still mesmerized when I watch this. Seeing him bend that tire iron and then flipping the car is just so truly incredible. I love seeing it over and over
god bless the 1980,s/ late 70,s i couldnt of picked a better decade to be a child if i tried . i was 6 in 1980 and terrified of the hulking out scene. go slow mo hulk go
Bill Bixby did an amazing job portraying David Bruce Banner for 5 seasons. I was afraid of the hulk Lou Ferrigno played for so long. Had nightmares of him chasing me. Until I saw the episode where Lou met the hulk on stage where Lou portrayed a bodybuilder. It gave me the psychological strength to take my greatest fear of being beaten by bullies and turn the hulk into a source of strength. To work out my muscles so that I wouldn't ever fear bullies ever again and defend myself. I have an autographed photo of Bill putting in the contacts for tbe first time with Producer Kevin Johnson. Kevin mailed it to me for being the only one to respond to his comme tary on the DVD episode season opened Prometheus asking for a copy of the mad magazine skit they did of their show the incredible hulk. I found scans of it online a decade or so prior. I was so happy to make contact and to help someone who had entertained me for so many years from being 8 years into my twenties. I farmed the autographed photo and hunt it on my wall.
THE 1ST EPISODE OF THE INCREDIBLE HULK SERIES IS PROBABLY THE SECOND BEST EPISODE MADE . I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT THE BEE🐝 EPISODE WHERE THE HULK COULDN'T CHANGE COMPLETELY BACK TO DAVID IS THE TOP BEST EPISODE MADE .
It's crazy that throughout this whole thing from leaving the lab and driving home angry I'm surprised he didn't start hulking out right there before getting the flat tire or hurting his hand while trying to change the tire.
In later episodes he did hulk out while driving, or just not enough change for the pay phone. That first time though...like the first time for everything...have to break through that ceiling. Not knowing what is coming just keep building and building then suddenly crossing that point of no return...and a sudden rush of raw power and strength and endorphins
What you're saying makes sense but his anger level needed a snapping point. He was frustrated and disappointed bordering on anger all the way up to the change but he was consumed with trying to figure out why it didn't work up until the tire. That was the last straw.
He was angry...but he needed the emotional commitment (attempting and failing to change the tire) in order to change into the Hulk (remember the people David and Elaina studied? Each of them demonstrated untapped strength - aided by gamma ray sunspots - as a result of getting extremely angry over the possibility of failing the task at hand - saving a boy from a burning car, knocking down a thick door, carrying a wounded soldier to a place of safety despite nursing an injury/injuries).
We all know it was low Gamma activity the day his wife was killed in the car accident but man can anyone imagine what would of happened if the gamma activity of the sun was high I mean really high like higher than what David had discovered with all those people he interviewed and he hulked out right there trying to get his wife out of that car man that would have been nuts you know what I mean.
@@scotsmith2391 Remember the episode '747' where he was onboard an airplane and he hulked out twice the first time in the cargo hold and the second time sitting in the pilots seat trying to land the plane without knowing the planes hydraulic lines were severed earlier which is why he was having trouble with the control stick and he hulked out right there and a kid he met before came in and saw the Hulk sitting in the chair and the kid had to help the Hulk land the plane now that was an interesting situation David found himself in and I remember one funny situation David found himself in was in one episode where I think he was a cab driver or something and he had a passenger who was pregnant and suddenly went into labor and he tried to get the gas stations attendant's attention but the guy ignored him and closed a door on David's hand if I remember that part correctly and David hulked out right there and the Hulk got the guy and dragged him out to the car and another one that was really funny was when David got involved in a black market for babies and he hulked out and saved both a woman and her baby that David met and became friends with earlier and what was really funny about that one was the Hulk picked up the baby and looked at it and actually grinned at how cute the baby was now that was funny seeing the Hulk smile.
You know it's funny that it was the live action t.v. series of the Incredible Hulk that helped Lou Ferrigno start his acting career with Bill Bixby taking him under his wing to teach him the ropes and when he started body building Lou trained under Arnold Schwarzenegger now that was awesome.
Funny story... I have a younger brother who had never seen the tv series. We had a bunk bed, and he had a habit of looking down from the top bunk to see if I was awake. So I Decided to play a trick on him. I bought the Incredible Hulk DVD collection, and a set of white contacts. One day he came in the room, and I was watching the hulk. After watching for awhile, he goes " That couldn't really happen, could it"? I say " Does radiation exist? Then it can happen". That night, we go to bed, and sure enough, he looks down to see if I'm awake. I tried to make it seem like I was dreaming, then opened my eyes with the white contacts in, looking right at him.I have never seen my brother run so fast in my life! PS: Yes, I got in trouble. Yes, it was worth it.
Masterfully filmed. From the quietly suspenseful music in the lab to the confused yet drunk with growing power look on Banner's face when he started to transform to the terrifying rage afterward... The people in charge of this pilot and show (especially the first couple of seasons) really knew what they were doing.
Bixby refused to do the show if it couldn’t be done as realistically as possible. He fought very very hard to make the show as adult oriented because he knew that if they captured the children and the adults they’d strike gold. He also wanted to legitimize television and comic books and he couldn’t do that if they went cheap or corny on the hulk.
This is peak television right here. This is making the best out of what you have. It is legit as riveting now as it was then. Who among us hasn't been so infuriatingingly frustrated they haven't wanted to flip their car into a ditch while primaly screaming into the void? The tones that hit when the transformation happens...its too perfect. Imagine stubbing your toe on the coffee table and unable to verbally scream out...that's what it sounds like. Honestly, this video IS Hulk's origin story. Forget Ang Lee and Edward Norton. Go from this scene straight into the first Mark Ruffalo scene.

This is so momentous, it just builds and builds and builds, real feels, not pre fab manufactured drama.
The music is pivotal to building up to the transformation. Everything about it was so beautifully done.
STILL LOVE this show!! Grew up watching this as a kid!
What are you, the narrator? 😏
@@mrwoods22 No, just a fan of the show. 🤣
@@ScreenBlaster13 my favorite all time show!😁
@@mrwoods22 Lol! That was funny, man!
NEVER gets old watching the TV show! I can watch this show over and over again!
Six years old in 77. This show was MUST see Friday nights. Had the pajamas too 😅
Have a Hulk glass a buddy got me for my 50th. Use it everyday 👍
This 1st change scared the hell of me as a kid! The transformation from banner to hulk was classic! The best change was always when banner change while flying the plane in 747 main event stuff!
agree
@@scottmoore1614 dell Frye

Incredible scene. So little dialog yet it leaves you completely captivated. Getting to see the first transformation in such a methodical way was brilliant
The mighty incredible hulk. There's no superhero like him 😏👊💥.
This scene still draws me in.
NO CGI.
NO MILLION DOLLAR BUDGETS
Just Hydraulics, pyrotechnics and TALENT both in front and behind the camera.
One of my favorite Hulkouts!!!! Thanks
The gamma ray machine act that would change David's life, forever.
And he will die.

@@generalshockwavekingpin326oh yeah that's funny someone told me after the Death of the incredible Hulk that he was gonna come back again.
This is one of my favorite episodes of any TV show ever.
My mom introduced me this show when it use to be on Netflix. We would watch an episode every weekend. I’m 21 years old and I love this show so much!
This series deserves to be preserved. Great acting . Producers. Cameramen. Music. All of it rip Bill and Jack .
7:50 television history is made 🤑
My late grandfather (a Hulk fan himself) always taped every episode of this show when it was rerun in syndication and we’d watch it together every Sunday I went over to his house for years; he’s the reason I became a fan of the Hulk in the first place
Since then, I’ve read Greg Pak’s PLANET HULK & WORLD WAR HULK comics (and its subsequent spin-off comics FRONT LINE, GAMMA CORPS, INCREDIBLE HERCULES, WARBOUND, AND DAMAGE CONTROL) and the first seven volumes of Jeph Loeb & Ed McGuinness’ (who I met at the 2013 Boston Comicon) RED HULK series (RED HULK, RED & GREEN, HULK NO MORE, HULK VS. X-FORCE, FALL OF THE HULKS, WORLD WAR HULKS, & SCORCHED EARTH)
You can see Lou had a size and definition nobody could come close to nobody!💪
Lou was especially ripped in the pilot. More-so than the later episodes. When the opportunity to do the Hulk came along, Lou was in the middle of training for the next Mr. Olympia competition. So he was in peak condition, and it showed.
No wonder why green is still my fave color after all these years!!!! BIG fan of the "Incredible Hulk"!!!
Original and best Hulk
100%
This one is more realistic.
The very first transformation to the Hulk still remains best! Bill Bixby should have won an Emmy
HE SHOULD HAVE WON AT LEAST THREE EMMYS!!!
And Lou Ferrignno too
Of all the hulk transformation scenes...the first is my all time favorite!
This was quite possibly the scariest thing to watch as a 5 year old. Nothing like watching a calm mild-mannered man go from being just that to being an eight-foot-tall not so Jolly Green Giant.
It still gets me and I still love it
7 feet
I was also 5 years old at the time. Was so fascinated with the Incredible Hulk.
Hasn’t everyone owned a car that they wanted to do this to?😂😂😂
I never owned a car but as a kid I always imagined being angry and turning into the hulk and destroying the car 😂
Yup, especially when you are trying to take off a rusted bolt and it breaks. This scene is what I am thinking about every single time.
I think the idea of roadside assistance was thought about after ppl saw dis episode and it became pretty clear we all could use the Hulk or at least someone to help out when a stupid car breaks down in the middle of a road during a lightning storm! Brilliant! 😅😃☺
I always wanted to do this to my 2007 Pontiac G6 years ago! It was a royal pain in da ass that car! 😅🤣😝
Whenever i scrapped my knuckles changing a puncture. ..i know how he felt
Everyone who was alive in the 1970's has said at least one in their life, "Don't make me angry (insert name); you wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
Bill and Lou will always be Dr banner and the Hulk. 🧬. My favourite marvel character. 👍🏻💯 My favourite show when I was a kid , still is.
This, and the Dukes of Hazzard were my favorite shows when I was growing up. And they both came on Friday nights.
At the end when the Hulk saved Elaina, she died in the Hulk's arms!
I like this version of him turning into the Hulk because it’s way more realistic with good reasoning behind it. Much more fit for a TV show
" Mr. Mcgee don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry ".
I didn't grow up in the 70s but I had this on DVD and when I saw this I was terrified, this just goes to show how good this show was that as a kid in the early 2000s it left an impact on me.
I always loved the music build-up to the change.
There were some highs and some lows I this series but the pilot episode is actually superb! Bill Bixby was the reason for the series success appealing to a sided audience than just kids
Yeah!Kids Young And Old!Haha!
This and the first with old man hulk were the best episodes of series
This show was ahead of it's time. Imagine how great it'd be today with CGI. It was and still IS awesome to this day.
CGI would make it worse, CGI has no organic qualities or power
it's a Classic because it has no CGI effects!!
@@alfulci6914 Unfortunately, as great as Lou Ferrigno is, he's no longer credible as the Hulk when playing him physically. CGI is the only way to do the Hulk justice.
@@filthycasual8187 unless if they can find another individual in today's age who's just as built like Lou was in his prime.
The cgi is b.s.. This works without any modern day technology. We grew up on this and still love it and definitely appreciate it the way it is.
Me too
Loved as as a kid and love it as an adult

I know as an impressionable kid this show, .this scene specifically, gave me goosebumps and I was hooked.
Even today as I rewatch this episode, I have to admit ..... for the early 80's, they did this first transformation of the Hulk.. brilliantly.
Sure do miss those 80's and 90's..

So was Banner, LMBO
That's a great transformation. AND THE STORM GOES WITH IT.
@Diana Barry Prometheus.
A marvellous story! And I'll bet your brother still remembers that to this day, hahaha! Thank you for sharing this.

Lou Ferrigno did an excellent job playing the hulk in the show and i Love this show
After the Hulk destroys da car, he starts walking like saying, "Hey I can just hitchhike my way home no problemo!" 🤣😅😝
Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno will always be the perfect Banner/Hulk combo
Lou Ferrigno's Hulk make-up for the pilot episode and the early season one episodes was so much better and scarier!

Were you kind of hoping the dentist secretly zapped you?
Same thing whenever I have an X-Ray.
I wonder what Elaina Marks would have said had she been there to witness Banner's first ever Hulkout?
She passed the hell out
Still think the pilot episode was never topped..it was darker and more atmospheric than the others..which I also loved as a kid..
