The Iconic Skye Boat song, written in memory of Flora MacDonald's Heroic acts during the Jacobite Uprising in 1745. She is Scotland's Heroine and honored in Scotland. Flora is buried in her homeland on the Northern part of the Isle of Skye in Kilmuir.
Flora showed Courage during the Jacobite uprising when she risked her life in saving Bonnie Prince Charlie on June 27, 1746. Dressing the Prince up in disguise as an Irish spinning maid, and sailing across the Minch to Skye.
Her Grave Epitaph Reads:
"Her name will be mentioned in History and if Courage and Fidelity be virtues, mentioned with honor." -Dr. Samuel Johnson
Artists message: "I had the honor and privilege to visit her graveside and play Skye Boat Song for her. She inspires me and reminds me to be courageous." -Tress Maksimuk, Dark Isle Piper
Filmed on location in Kilmuir Cemetery, Isle of Skye and Port Charlotte on the Isle of Islay
Recorded at Weathertop Studio
Bagpipes by Tress Maksimuk 2017

I feel as though the great spirits led me to this song this morning! I wasn't feeling well this morning,as tough a lady as I am,spinal cord injury which rarely ever hurts was hurting this morn.Me being the MAC DONALD that I am frm birth and by blood, I went to my phn to here some positive prayers and or music to help fight off the negative w/some positive, and this song was the very first that I chose! WHAT A BLESSING! A beautiful Scottish song that I've never heard before and it's a song about Flora Mac Donald! When I saw the word COURAGE it reminded me of the fact that I AM A MAC DONALD and us Mac Donalds don't go down easy! So I fought back the pain right then and there! I'm sitting up now and starting my day! Whenever something gets us down,WE GOTTA FIGHT BACK AND SURVIVE IT! May God Bless This Beautiful Bagpipper for bringing us such a strong spirited song!
Thank God for the pipes! Especially when played this skillfully! 😄🏴
I was born on thE Isle of Bute, ( Rothesay ) and can still remember my mother singing this tune to get me to sleep, RIP
There's something about a lone bagpipe. This melody is so hauntingly beautiful. ❤
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onwards the sailors cry
Carry the lad that was born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Great Scottish melody I saw written in an old book of Northern songs that I gave to Robin who went to Massachusetts and started the Riverdance, great music. 🌄ua-cam.com/video/txKGuMKWJc0/v-deo.html 🐺
I grew up,on stories of Bonnie Prince Charlie...I want my songs to tele the my life experiences...
With all the history in these locations... I picture many ghosts pausing to listen to your tunes and peacefully sigh...
As do I and those ghosts have affixed themselves to my Soul as this beautiful Piper brings us back.
It makes my tears long for the ocean, to mingle and play among the waves until crashing upon forgotten shores.
Oh Tress , the wife and I's favorite song they play on our favorite show Outlander !!! We just love that song and you play it Superbly!! Now I know the name of it , and I have put you into my Playlist now as well , Thankyou for sharing all of yourlovely music with us 🇺🇸 ❤
For certain the heart and soul of your singing pipes brings her memory to rise and walk among us again.
Dark Isle Piper : I am a fan - Now and forever !!!
Aye, and may this MacLean join in.
What a truly great version that does the fallen of culloden honor. You know know I love you music.
That lady moves me with her pipes. I have always loved the pipes from my early childhood. I am Indian, but there's a wee bit of Scott in my family tree.
who loves such music must have a romantic heart :)
so i think this kind of music conveys feelings like romance, melancholy, tender and fine.
Memories of old times and stories of suffering and happiness.
But can quickly change into heroism, bravery and courage.
So I want to say a very versatile instrument that you play very well
thanks and many kind regards from switzerland

LOYALTY AND BRAVERY
Enchanting......love it
I just heard "Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep, watch by your weary head" even though there were no words being sung and I wasn't keeping track of which verse we had got to.
You've got me thinking of her. ^__^
Very evocative.
Nice job. ^__^
Thank you for playing, recording and posting. ^___^
I’ve saved this to be played at my funeral.
Well done Tress. Great music and excellent production once again..!! ;-))

hermosa música, hermosos paisajes y lindas ilustraciones
pero esta música me trae paz a mi corazón gracias.
Flora MacDonald was Indeed a heroine for the part she played in helping Charles Edward Stuart escape after Culloden in 1746. He, alas, was somewhat less of a hero, having led his army to a crushing defeat, he fled back to France, from whence he came. He later, secretly visited England where he converted to Protestantism before returning again to France. He died in Rome, a bitter, disillusioned drunkard.
We made the same mistake in Ireland with James the 2nd or James the shithead as we called him.
So I have heard.
It's still a good story anyway.
You just have to leave out most of that part most of the time.
I take it there are/were many people somewhat disappointed in Charlie.
And yet they/we still keep singing about him. ^___^
All your performances are excellents....but this one is UNIQUE
БРАВО!!!!
Yes Ma'am, Nice!

"Merry of soul, he sailed on a day,
Over the sea to Skye."

OMFG :O your harmonies are so beautiful! Congrats for this!
"Many's the lad, fought in that day,
Well the claymore did wield,
When the night came, silently lay
Dead on Culloden's field..."
Marjory Forsythe was such a lovely lady I would have loved till the end of the world yet I had to go 💖
I've always loved this piece but the mystery and romanticism was slightly spoiled for me when my uncle - whose family are descended from one of the followers of said Bonnie Prince - let out that the family rumours/secrets (not sure what you would call them) stated that he was actually a drunkard, a womaniser and a gambler. They followed him out of loyalty to his father but it seems didn't think so much of the son. Don't know how true it is (though from what I have since read in a couple of biographies the family rumours didn't lie) but his family history was something he was extremely proud of.
❤❤❤

Do you make recordings of yourself playing and play with them? Is that How you get multiple parts playing at once? It sounds so cool ❤

Shades of Hans Christian Andersen Little Mermaid statue as Blackisle Piper stands on the rocks by the bayshore line connecting with the serenity of the waters, winds, nature.
Fof our land is lost now ..and has been for a long time ,(
Beautifully done. As for my branch of the MacLeod Clan, they didn't trust the Bonnie Prince enough to be at Culloden although many MacLeod's died in that bloodbath. For that choice & distrust I was granted life because my ancestors made the right choice as the Bonnie Prince proved to be so unworthy of the station he tried to grasp. Full respect to Flora for getting the Bonnie Prince out of Scotland.
@Traditional Arts International Ah but you miss the finer points of history & the bigger plan is that it was Scottish blood line which eventually took over after the Tudors. In my case my ancestors recognized that Bonnie Prince Charlie was not
worthy of their deaths. Britain stole the Stone of Scone so that the Stewarts would bring Scottish Royalty to sit over it in England.
@Traditional Arts International Not crap in the bigger picture as I suggested in noting that it was eventually Kings of Scotland that were also to become the Kings of England in the History of why Scottish Kings & Queen Elizabeth w
ere coronated on it. As for Bonnie Prince Charlie & his life I am glad that my ancestors rejected him & considering his history I have reason to be.
@Traditional Arts International Btw , you may disagree & that is fine with me but I am the reason for my ancestors choice to come to Canada after the Highland Clearances which were orchestrated by greedy Chieftains who put pasturing sheep above the peasants who also died in Culloden.
@Traditional Arts International My family did not see Bonnie Prince Charlie as a Scottish King for good reason which he proved when he lived the rest of his life as he did . My ancestors saw him as "Not Worthy & in Historical reality he wasn't. In answer to the Highland Clearances we came to Cape Breton ,in love with the Hebrides & land owners that my family would never have known in Scotland. In fact I now live beside the beautiful Mira River but my ancestors built in the backlands of our property in a stone croft but they owned the land that they would never own in Scotland. We landed in 1800 & I live on the same property. I retain the nicmame Thor as has my family since we arrived here in order to keep our link to my Viking Scottish ancestors. You seem to forget that neither the Iroquois chiefs or the Huron Chiefs that guided Champlain to the spot where one of Champlain's party killed three chiefs with one shot are remembered either but Champlain was able to take full advantage of existing tribal wars in opening up the Saint Lawrence seaway . With that entrance all native wars eventually came to an end which put an end to the genocide they were committing against each other.
@Traditional Arts International Truth is the English Kings had to eventually go to Scotland to join the Kingship Bloods of Scotland & England & it was done through the Stewarts no matter how badly you wish to ignore the Historical account of whom God would put over the Stone of Scone. BTW I am justified for being alive because my portion of the Mac Leod Clan saw Bonnie Prince Charlie as a waste of our blood & thus I live.
Just discovered your videos and I absolutely adore them. There is one thing that I find odd though, you cut them off so abruptly. Is there a reason for that rather than fading out?
