You're behind in the news and it is not a touchy, feely, story. It is an old whale, came in to peacefully die, Perth folk should know better than to approach and distress the poor animal, especially for selfies. It swam further down the Perth coast to Rockingham, where it has beached itself in the shallow waters and sheltered cove. It got injured by a boat on the way down too. No happy ending for this majestic creature. Rockingham foreshore beach has been shut off to the public, for the whale and peoples sake. Sharks tend to come and feed off dying and dead whales, you see.
The Rangers are discussing whether to quickly euthanized it, beaching in shallow waters puts a huge amount of pressure on it's organs and it will slowly die.
Poor whale, we wish you well and thank you for inhabiting the earth at the same time as us.

Hello, and thanks for the info.
I read somewhere, might have been Melville’s classic, that “whale falls” in the old days had an average spacing of about 50 miles. Across at least the North Atlantic, I guess. Or it might have been in a modern article that described the ecosystem that ate the carcasses - including the bones by the last tag-team.
Is this beaching-option common, for whales who know their end is near?
      Cheers, from Edmonton AB.

Unfortunately, i regret to inform you and others that the whale has passed. It died a few hours after your post.
You are correct, Whales and large sharks go into shallow water when they are ill or dying, as the shallow water reduces the angle of attack from predators.
The people who swam upto it only hastened it's demise and put it under further stress.
The distance laws on these animals needs to be actually enforced rather than "talked about" every single time.

Thank you for the info. A very sad story indeed...I hope it passed peacefully. Nice that at least when it sprayed its blowhole they backed off of it. Who knows, the whale could have loved the few pets before it passed...they're very social. I'd like to hope that's the case.

@@CathyRussell-sw2df it is known when it comes to scenarios like this. Most animals that are very sick or dying find refuge from predators. Whales and sharks often go into shallow water when they are vulnerable so other sea predators find it harder to get to them.
It's the same reason cats and dogs in their final days of suffering from old age, hide or make a unusual bed.
