I've been saying this for years. Rowing competitions on the open are not fair for athletes. We need closed structures around bodies of water that are specifically designed for rowing.
I fear the Olympic commitee will not like this idea :)
YESS!! CRI Boston is my boathouse (I’m a sophomore in high school) and they have so many programs for all age groups. Love my boathouse!!♥️
I row in South Australia. Two weeks ago a regatta was almost cancelled because of heat and this past weekend it was almost cancelled because it was too wet and windy!
Here in north of germany late starter has always been a focus on to find new club members who will participate even in "Wander Ruder Events" in holidays cause they support infrastructure ... In school rowing you may catch each year 10-20 out of 4 school classes that start each summer ... and leave 8 years later or earlier. But late starter over age 20 tend to stay in a club over decades.
The regatta in my hometown was cancelled this year due to low water levels! (Ross-on-Wye)
Regarding late starters: In the Netherlands there are two "rowing worlds": students and "civilian" clubs. Civilian clubs always welcome late starters, though most clubs have a shortage on instructors. Anyway, even the past corona year my club experienced a growth in new members. Apart from races there are lots of opportunities in NL for recreational rowing (wander rudern) in wider vessels (C-boats and wherries). And marathons (anything over 50km) can be done both as a race and just for fun, so that is a nice cross-over. Although I do agree it is less easy to find a coach that can bring you up to racing level.
Coastal Rowing is growing as it addresses many of these issues. The boats are more economical, they are more stable and can be rowed by many more people safely, you do not need an expensive rowing course to race, adding navigation skills and more challenging water conditions make for more of a challenge and excitement. Check out coastalrowingusa.com to get a flavor.
I disagree with the statement about the late-starters and how little there is for them. In the Netherlands, we have a lot of general rowing clubs (as in: non-student clubs) which, as far as I know, all offer entry courses regardless of age.
Same here in New Zealand... lots of clubs offer adult learn to row. Maybe this is only in Austria ?
Right on, I am 60 just starting rowing for exercise and weight loss. To the person who commented on swimming, yes also a great sport and I highly recommend doing both as there is a tremendous overlap. See previous video of swimmer who became elite rower in a short period of time!
Hi Aram...love your videos and expertise! I am a Lwt. Masters rower from St. Catharines Ontario Canada...member of St. Catharines Rowing Club. I also coach high school (novice Lwt women's) and coach Recreational Rowing. You are so on-point with all of your predictions. I see this video was posted in Feb 2019 but due to COVID and lock downs in 2020, I have seen a huge increase in new rowers, as people are looking for ways to get in shape and develop a new skill. I will be directing all new rowers to your page as you have so much valuable information to offer. As well, I am using your lock down workouts for off water training; luckily, our club has allowed experienced scullers out since June 6 and have been using your techniques to improve my over all stroke and increase power.
Thank you so much Sandy! Means a lot to me!
Cycling for age 30+ is very popular lately. It's easy on the joints and can be done for a long time.
Coastal rowing does seem to be gaining popularity too (in Ireland there's a traditional element and the new coastal CX1 boats are gaining traction. The O'Donovan brothers helped a lot)
Anyone manage to register for that seminar? The link goes to home page
re late start: really? I see the opposite around Hampton Roads Virginia. One of the close clubs is VERY active at getting adults into the sport and the others are also very welcoming to new rowers.
So we'll have more lightweight masters rowers who started late and row on the water less. Got it.
Yes, coastal rowing is coming on strong as it is not so weather dependent.
62 and just started 1x....
Sadly you are 100% correct in regards to the "late starters". I started last year (in Frankfurt, Germany) sculling (I was indoor rowing before for ~1 year) and the support is practically non existing. I would love to even pay money for a coach to excel at sculling and I'm capable of investing 2-3 sessions a week on water, but there is practically no way of managing that outside of a rowing camp. :(
Rudergesellschaft Speyer offers individual skull training with motorboat and experienced trainers - if you are interested...
@@kirchbootmanufakturspeyer71 Good to know, I will keep this in mind for when I move back into the area. I have heard that they have a Biorower, which I take as a very good sign.
Thank you!
Chicago had -20F not -20C! That was cold enough
Hm... I double checked two weather sites... both said -30C for that day.
They are almost almost the same temperatures
Only swimming is healthier than rowing.
What about the chlorine toxicity?
@@marcusconway4 then again, if you do row on water, there are also pretty disgusting water qualities out there 🥲 not everyone rows in a perfect swiss mountain lake. Other than that, you're right of course :)
You're right, the weather is changing, the re-entrants and newcomers will change the rower's image. It is important that the material, the boats, will also have to change. The top level boats will have to change for master's competitions such as the Coastal rowing competitions.
