Yeah, regularly. I never stopped actually. Whatever broader stuff was happening throughout the gaming industry during the Wii U era was kinda just stuff I was very far removed from, I was just always at home playing Mario Galaxy and stuff on my Wii during that time completely oblivious to the broader landscape, other than younger me being annoyed that the latest Mario games like Mario U and 3D World weren't being released on the Wii because I didn't know anything about different consoles being more or less powerful than others lol. Even in the early Switch era, while I became more aware of things, I was still an active Wii user, even buying stuff off the Wii Shop Channel in 2018 just days before they started discontinuing the service haha.

To explain the DNS Server thing, it helps to think of a DNS server as like an "internet phone book". When you connect to this special DNS server and the Wii says "Where can I find Nintendo's Wifi servers?" the DNS server deliberately gives them wrong directions and points them to the custom server.
Not only that, there's an exploit that patches the system that verifies that you are connecting to the official servers on the fly, there was a screw up on the SSL encryption libraries if I remember correctly and a developer called shutterbug2000 was involved. (He did the same thing for the DS line of consoles)
its a bit more complicated than that iirc, nintendo actually used HTTPS to do connection to Nintendo WFC, but they found some way to make the wii think the certificate is signed by a trusted CA

Nice video, but one thing worth mentioning is that the reason why wi-fi connection shut down was because the servers were run by gamespy, which shut down at the same time. If the servers were run by a different company it's possible the Wii's online could have stayed up longer.
IDK, Nintendo HATES online multiplayer. Look at how they butchered online play with the WiiU, from what I heard most of it was part of the day 1 patch that they pushed out for it. I think they still would have shut down the servers just like they are doing with the 3ds and WiiU service next year. They had the opportunity to match the 360 and ps3 but chose something more akin to the ps2 and dreamcast for its, essentially, first jump into onine multiplayer. The gamecube did have a broadband adapter for stuff like PSO and Mario Kart LAN play but not many people had one.

As somebody who actually didn't grow up with the wii I must say that I actually really like it more than the other nintendo consoles and I'm a super big fan of all of the mario kart wii custom track mods and in general I really like the effort of the wii modding community a lot, they inspired me to start modding my favourite wii game Super Mario Galaxy and I've been having a lot of fun making custom levels for it and I'm glad there's still a devoted community of wii modders and I hope mods for mario kart wii new super mario bros wii and mario galaxy never stop being made because they're all amazing
@@jeffxdd4351 Well, idk how old AlexSMG is but "people who didn't grow up with the Wii" could also refer to like Xbox 360 and PS3 kids too which would still be around the same age as people who grew up with the Wii, or anyone else from around that era that just didn't have or use a Wii, doesn't have to be people who grew up after the Wii's lifespan. But yeah you're right in general, that is still kinda crazy to think about that people who grew up after the Wii are now getting that old.
This proves despite the now obsolete hardware and specs, the Wii is a timeless console with great games that still hold up and have strong replayability.
As a competitive mkw (mario kart wii) player. this video is actually really well made and I absolutely loved it. Hope more people get into the game as it is 1 of a kind.
Early CTGP required folk to actually dump the game disc to an iso, replace the track files, and either burn it to a disc or run the game from a usb drive through homebrew apps such as USB Loader GX. This was before Riivolution dropped, as we didn't have any means to live-replace files while the game was running at the time. Also fun fact: The earliest tracks, such as ASDF_Course and Mushroom Peaks, were generated by using heightmaps, usually drawn in mspaint, and could only be as complex as the track they were editing as we didn't have the means to actually generate new models; we could only edit the existing ones. It wasn't until several years later, around the time Riivolution dropped, before we could actually import models properly and no longer be restrained to the confines of the existing models.
I can't believe this console is 16 - 17 years old, it's literally a Sega Genesis now But it has aged so damn well! This system refuses to die and it's awesome. I just never see the Switch lasting this long. Also fun fact: the fan services have actually outlived the official servers since 2020 or so This was a great video and I loved the nostalgic music and effects in the background, the Wii really was an amazing console! I used to be in the CTGP community and played thousands of races and CTWWs
" I just never see the Switch lasting this long" All Nintendo platforms tend to last longer than people think. the wii u still gets love. 3ds gets a lot as well. I think the wii is probably one of the weirdest systems to still get modded since the wii u is the natural progression from it.
@@theglassarrow_ Well, not many people got a Wii U while many Wii games are still extremely popular for modding, so it makes sense that people who want to mod Wii games would still target the normal Wii itself primarily since that covers both systems and the original Wii is _significantly_ more common than the U.
Iw as too young to enjoy the wii's online community, strict parents and everything, I never once set foot on the internet on my wii, or my 3ds, and by the time I finally could both had already been shut down entirely But watching this makes me really want to try it out and experience what I wished I could many years ago
Me & my brother have been collecting old consoles and games, and the wii has to be one of the most fun consoles ever made! There's so many goofy things that can be done with motion controls and any competition based games are a blast. I'm hoping to properly mod it someday so I can get the full wii experience.

I used to play Super Mario Galaxy, and it was great! I'm pretty sure the Weather Channel and stuff were there the last time I played as well, so it's nice to know they've been revived by the (insanely dedicated) community. Great editing, keep it up!
As someone who grew up with the Wii, it’s pure nostalgia for my 2000s childhood. I still remember playing Rockband and Beatles Rockband! I’m so happy the algorithm recommended this channel and video to me. Thanks for this!
I was skeptical about Wii modding but after carefully modding it I never went back. The emulators, the USB Loaders the amount of creativity that Wii homebrew community puts in their homebrew apps is amazing. We have online play back you can play backups of you own discs making you never switch the game. You can add custom themes. The Mods like PMEX REMIX DX,Universe,Infinite, Project Plus,Project M,Rom hacks like CTGP R, and so much more. I don’t regret modding my Wii at all.
My fellow nerd Brothers. I wanna replay my old GC games on my wii. My question is can these home brew hacks n mods work with the original BC Wii models? Thanks y’all
i was a bit too young when the wii's internet connections were discontinued so i'd never used it. i still play wii games super often and i have so many memories of it, especially considering mine is hacked and i have like 100+ games lol. one of these memories that makes me laugh is that like 7-8 years ago, my cousin and i were playing barbie horse adventures (or whatever it's called) and we hated barbie so much we kept trying to drown her in the lakes! i also have memories of playing wii fit with my parents and absolutely destroying them at ski jump. my mom and i also played an obscure game called kororinpa marble mania that was really fun and required a lot of skill with tilt controls. all in all i love the wii and i'm so glad mine still works as well as it does!
What a video, what a man. Honestly good job chilly. I rly didn’t know about wiilink at all so thanks for talking us through it. Best of luck for your future and you’ve earned my support amigo :)
The fact that you put all the music u used in the video, some alternative titles and a full description is pretty impressive, i apreciate that. You gained my like
I appreciate the effort put into the video and the music selection you used is awesome! :-) Thanks for putting the music used in the description, most youtubers don't do that.
The wii was my second ever console, after my sega genesis xD It came out really late around my city, and with the lack of original software, video game stores would sell them already modded! Without homebrew I wouldn't have met some of my favorite games/rom-hacks! ❤ This little console brought me the best years of my life!
Great video! It is really impressive how the community is still actively reviving the Wii, I am currently still using my console and it is amazing how they were able to bring all its features back.
i have so much nostalgia for the wii and 3ds that i'm really happy to see both of their respective modding scenes continue to grow! you could give me these two consoles modded ALONE and i'd need nothing else to fuel my life. the wii has the news, the forecast, the internet, tonnes of games for me to enjoy and mod to my hearts content! the 3ds has so much too, like being able to play every game from the 3ds, ds, gba, gbc and gb with a new 3ds xl and the [I DO NOT OFFICIALLY SUPPORT PIRACY]. Both are great consoles and by far the best of their kind.
Nice video! The homebrew channel was indeed revolutionary. Wii is still a great machine for emulation. The NDS has also some stuff alive, like the great Flipnote Studio.
Nintendo didn't choose to shut down WFC. The GameSpy servers that they were operating on were bought out by another company and they decided to initially shut down games without warning, before going on to shut everything down on that date.
How are you under 1k subs? You are awesome man! Your style of editing, the calmness of your voice, all the wonderful information! Keep doing what you love man ^w^ Im all for it
I’m so happy I came across this channel. I been mourning the Wii since the online services shut down and didn’t even know there were mods for it all this time. I appreciate your channel! Keep it up!
The Wii U and 3ds are already seeing similar treatment despite still having online servers as of writing this comment. There is already an alternative to Nintendo network specifically so that as soon as it goes down you can switch to it called pretendo network.
I'm very curious to see what fans will do when the Switch shuts down. Both the Wii and the switch are very important to me so I hope they can both live on. But I'm also excited for whatever Nintendo is going to release next. Great video! Love seeing all of the small creators in my recommeded lately.
Eh, the switch can be hacked (at least the early consoles) so there will be a big market for those hackable consoles. Or since it has a cartridge slot, someone will make a flashcart for it which would be cool
I love videos like this man. I've been playing on either my Wii or o2DS (yes I'm a o2Ds user, not a 3DS user lmao) and if I ain't playing, I'm watching something related to either consoles. I haven't gotten RiiConcet24 or Wiifimmfi yet though, def should. Anyway, looking forward to more videos from you!
just modded my wii last week and i’ve been learning about all this it’s amazing! i love the wii and im so glad people have put in so much effort to keep the wii alive and better than before
amazing editing!! was expecting your channel to be really popular especially considering the quality of content you’re putting out, keep up the amazing work:)
my dad picked up a wii at his work. it was fully functional, but it came without a wiimote. i was at vacation and i got myself a wiimote lol. fast forward today, i revived the wii with homebrew n stuff. i still hold some regret today for resetting it. the last thing i saw was the owner and their family on mii channel
Riivolution actually came out in March 2010 (source: WiiBrew Riivolution Changelog). 2013 was when the beta of CTGP-R v1.03 was released (the version we're still using today). The stable didn't come out until January 2014, so yeah it only had a run of 4 months. Online custom tracks have been a thing since 2010 for private lobbies, with CTGP v2.8 (2.8 meaning 28 tracks). The first official public lobbies for custom tracks were in November/December 2011 in CTGP-R v1.01. There was an unofficial patch add-on for v1.00 for CTWWs but it wasn't officially integrated until v1.01.
Very well made video! Very good made timeline. Unfortunately this video makes it look like CTGP would be the only pack which of course isnt correct. There is an entire modding wiki which has like hundreds of CT Packs and thousands of custom track. And new stuff is coming out pretty much daily
yea for sure i’m aware of the other mario kart wii hack packs that are out, however ctgp is simply just the most popular and essentially the reason for wiimmfi existing in the first place
The Wii and DS were my first consoles as a kid(Which explains why I liked the Wiiu and 3DS more than the Switch, lol), so it is great to see that fans still have not even the faintest plan of dropping their support for these old plattforms that started the current modern era of Nintendo gaming. Infact, development is actually going into the opposite direction of the plattforms being absorbed into the digital realm so even hardware failure cannot bring an end to them. Like seriously, emulator development has gotten to the point where people have been speculating about implementing a passive instance into Dolphin that will notify you about mail on the Wii Menu's notice board, that's just nuts. Of course, not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Some games that had nothing to do with NWFC(Like the Wii version of Dragon Quest X) still have very little chance of getting back online anytime soon, especially because most of those custom servers were not exactly documented before being shut down. But hey, it's still nice that the vast majority of the original experience continues to be preserved as of right now. 7:54 Huh!? I literally never heard of that before. 😭I'm a fake WiiU-fan appearently, lol.
The Wii will always be the ultimate Nintendo console in my opinion. So overlooked because of its reputation, but possesses everything a fan could want, proven by how many years people have spent tinkering with its hardware.
I remember that the wii was the first console with playing online games and it had far more useful features than all the future Nintendo consoles combined. I mean you had the weather channel which wasn't the greatest due to limited location settings but it worked well enough to show the weather in a nearby town then you have the mii, news, Nintendo news, demo, messaging options, Netflix, internet browser, wii speak, Virtual Console and few more things that even the Switch doesn't have.
Thank you so much, I never knew there is still an online community for this little console. I used to play Call of duty 4 Wii online few years ago and it was very amusing. Far Cry Vengeance, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Medal of Honor Vanguard on Wii are also great and highly recommended, its motion controls are so good, and those were the most played games by me. I'd like to see more content like this about Wii games and modding. Cheers!
Don't forget that games like Goldeneye 007, Black Ops, and (the best fps on Wii) Conduit 2 all have their online up and running still. Conduit 2 is definitely a major hidden gem.
The wii was a huge part of my childhood, i have this core memory of some friends and cousins having a sleepover and we played Wii Sports till 2 then Mariokart on our DS, we had cookies and such, i was like 8, still remember that glorious day
I remember being 3 years old; figuring out how to use the Wii pointer on my Wii remote while my older brothers were at school. The spark of wonder I felt when New Super Mario bros wii booted up when I clicked on the disc channel. I’m just thankful for the memories my Wii gave me, and the new memories I make with my younger siblings on it everyday.
You know, the Wii still manages to hang on in a lot of places. Im guessing its more social nature meant that a lot of households are still finding enjoyment from it these many years later.
Project M remix wasn't really the mod that took over the PM scene after the original shut down, the community plays a mod called P+ instead that's basically a community involved continuation of the mod after the original developers ceased development on the original
I am a 16 year old currently, and I got my Wii in 2018. I’ve started modding it last year so that I can play my uncle’s old games and such. I’m planning to also get Wiimmfi and stuff like that to play online with my brothers!
Found my old Wii a couple weeks ago, but had a lot of missing accessories. Waiting for them to arrive and then going to start playing it again. Wii was one of my favorite consoles, and a part of me wishes they'd make another console that utilizes movement/motion like this. Also finding my old 3ds helped revive my Nintendo love.
Small correction: Riivolution was released in 2010, and people were playing custom tracks as early as 2009. So CTGP and Nintendo Wifi co-existed for a little longer than mentioned in the video
ever since i first modded my wii to play some smg2 mods ive wanted to try out modding myself, but i never had a proper computer to do it. Now that i have one, im finally able to mod the wii myself, and it feels amazing. I'm happy to see wii modding as a whole is still so active after all these years
Wii was my childhood but since mine wasnt really connected to the internet back then i missed out on the time it was still held up by nintendo. Thankfully, i last year bought a second wii to use at my moms house, ive modded it and its so amazing how the community revived the services. I love the wii and perhaps its my favourite console ever, i still use both of them every now and then, last time was 2 days ago.
Been in the Wii online scene since 2019 It's steadily growing. There are lots of people playing vanilla Mariokart Wii every day now. It's not hard to find a full room.
The Wii has a special place in my heart, being the first ever console I played and my parents giving me my own (apart from the Famicom that was given to my family from my aunt in Japan). It was coupled with MKWii, Wii Sports and Resort. We had a lot of fun with it, of course. Unfortunately, it's been a long time since I played on my Wii due to my discs being damaged, making it unplayable. I didn't find out about modding consoles until a few months ago, when I wanted to mod my 3DS.
I was literally shoked when i saw that you have 800 subs I thought that you will have at least something like 20k with this editing, you fr deserve more subs
Gotta love the nostalgia vibe... I remember installing the HBC with the Twilight Hack, I had to borrow the game from a friend who ended up hacking his Wii, and the next thing you know, 5 of us were having fun in all sorts of ways with our consoles. These lines of code seemed so mysterious and magical at the time :) That was a golden era for the modding/hacking community, every month something new and existing came out. Running backups from an external HDD was the best, emulators were pretty sick too. I'm so sad that my sister sold my Wii when I was studying abroad... It's not a matter of financial loss, but to think that the time and effort I had put in there was gone for good, and lies in somebody's living room who may be ignorant of what my baby can do, that makes me sad to this day. Well, it doesn't really matter, I use Dolphin and enjoy my games at 4K and I watch lovely videos like this one :)
Ah the Wii. The best 3D Mario game, one of the best Mario Kart track selections, the return of both traditional DK and Kirby, a pretty good 2D Mario game,(I’ll defend the first two NSMB games.) the start of Virtual Console, and the Nintendo Channel, pretty much a precursor to Nintendo Directs except with all sorts of different videos.
I would like to highlight the beautiful community of fortune Street, going ss far as to create a sequel for the game adding far FAR too many game boards that are mind bogglingly balanced

Very scary thought that people who didn't grow up with the wii can now write coherent UA-cam comments lol

I miss casually play mario kart wii, the last time i tried it was so competitive :/
@@hectoralejandrotorrespopoc9232 I loved it, definitely was the most played wii online game. Only one that actually ran decently too.
It wasn't until several years later, around the time Riivolution dropped, before we could actually import models properly and no longer be restrained to the confines of the existing models.
i actually had no idea mushroom peaks was made using heightmaps drawn on mspaint but it makes tons of sense tbh
@@chillysu I may also add on that the software use to do these track edits was also made by MrBean and Chadderz.
I can't believe this console is 16 - 17 years old, it's literally a Sega Genesis now
But it has aged so damn well! This system refuses to die and it's awesome. I just never see the Switch lasting this long.

This was a great video and I loved the nostalgic music and effects in the background, the Wii really was an amazing console! I used to be in the CTGP community and played thousands of races and CTWWs
It’s very likely that the Switch won’t last nearly as long due to it being much harder to mod.
" I just never see the Switch lasting this long"
All Nintendo platforms tend to last longer than people think. the wii u still gets love.

It’s truly amazing how they keep these servers and all these mods for free. The Wii community is truly awesome
Great video! As someone who loves this niche of modded wii stuff, it's great seeing a video about it.

I don’t regret modding my Wii at all.

i was a bit too young when the wii's internet connections were discontinued so i'd never used it. i still play wii games super often and i have so many memories of it, especially considering mine is hacked and i have like 100+ games lol. one of these memories that makes me laugh is that like 7-8 years ago, my cousin and i were playing barbie horse adventures (or whatever it's called) and we hated barbie so much we kept trying to drown her in the lakes! i also have memories of playing wii fit with my parents and absolutely destroying them at ski jump. my mom and i also played an obscure game called kororinpa marble mania that was really fun and required a lot of skill with tilt controls. all in all i love the wii and i'm so glad mine still works as well as it does!
I’m a 2010 kid so I never grew up with Wii I’m happy it is back

Nintendo didn't choose to shut down WFC. The GameSpy servers that they were operating on were bought out by another company and they decided to initially shut down games without warning, before going on to shut everything down on that date.

The Wii U and 3ds are already seeing similar treatment despite still having online servers as of writing this comment. There is already an alternative to Nintendo network specifically so that as soon as it goes down you can switch to it called pretendo network.
10:51 the devs in Project M came back recently and update the game. They finally brought back an old fan game to life again after 4 years.
It's crazy to think that the Wii is close to 2 decades old
It being the most common console in the usa and japan sure helps and its powerful enough to be great for indie homebrew

This is a certified classic recomended video! Great watch!
glad youtube did it’s thing for u
Very well made video! Very good made timeline. Unfortunately this video makes it look like CTGP would be the only pack which of course isnt correct. There is an entire modding wiki which has like hundreds of CT Packs and thousands of custom track. And new stuff is coming out pretty much daily
yea for sure i’m aware of the other mario kart wii hack packs that are out, however ctgp is simply just the most popular and essentially the reason for wiimmfi existing in the first place
I still play my Wii no matter what its so good even in 2023
so real
Never underestimate the power of the fan ...
they ain’t believe in us GOD DID
The fact that the phrase “ordering Domino’s from my Wii” is a real, coherent sentence that can be said in 2023 is insane

Amazing video, heaps of detail and info. Brings back memories.
The Wii has a special place in my heart, being the first ever console I played and my parents giving me my own (apart from the Famicom that was given to my family from my aunt in Japan).
It was coupled with MKWii, Wii Sports and Resort. We had a lot of fun with it, of course.

Ah the Wii.
