Hey Spicy I’m currently rebuilding the same engine as my con rod snapped I have all the replacement parts and currently cleaning all the parts as I’ve completely dismantled it, any advice for when I put it back together?

Watching this video really makes me think how far we as humans have advanced in the last couple centuries. How we as a race have managed to design and create a complex machine such as an engine blows my mind.

Got to say you explained that really well. Did not know how simple an engine and its surrounding components really are. Of course they are an engineering feat in themselves but now I am gona get an old motorcycle and take it apart to have some fun. Thanks for your effort that you put into this video.

My first bike after passing my test was an RD400. Blew it up, (obviously), knowing absolutely nothing, just armed with a Haynes manual and decent tool kit, stripped it down on my bedroom floor. Learned so much about how an engine works and goes together. If you can (ignore the complaints of your mum/girlfriend/wife) lay a sheet down and in a clean dry enviroment, even a large, "complicated" engine is manageable. Just be methodical and these days, take digital photos of each stage. There's no great mystery. (plus, if you're a bit of a nerd, its a better passtime than train spotting)

    Awesome little quick how-to spicy!
    .
That thing you didn't know the name of that happened to the piston is blow-by, some amount is always expected, especially with forced induction where you have high effective compression ratios and loose fitting rings to deal with the heat, though excessive blow-by is obviously a problem.
    .
The other thing in the left cover is the pick-up for the CDI box - ignition timing. Not sure if your bike has TCI or CDI but either way needs reference for spark timing.

Good job, very straight forward. The difference between a car engine and a bike engine is very small, especially the transmission. I think it's mad how thick a bike clutch is though, only ever seen clutches that chunky on very high performance vehicles, is it because a bike clutch is always kind of engaged?

is it smoking on acceleration or when off the throttle
you may need valve stem seals, requires the valves out so you may aswell replace the valves while your at it..
it could be the bore is glazed did you hone it when it was out? this will ensure a good seal (providing the bore is not too warn)

I have a 1984 KDX250 dirt bike and right now it's not working because I need a Generator Rotor. However, I would love to remove that whole engine and install another engine that will fit and match the KDX body. Would I be able to do that? Far as getting another rotor looks like major stores don't have them at all anymore. So getting another engine from another bike and year may be the best thing I should do.

also spicey, how old in k's/miles was that engine? also please post a high res pic of the valves showing how far in the head they have warn (receded into the seat)
This is important as it can determine or help determine how much work your motor can do in your current bike (if its a similar engine) or even uses the same valves and springs
    it all varies though

As someone who has been properly trained to take apart and put together aircraft engines, I will say you should be confident in your skills to work on these types of engines.. If you do the proper research into how to do whatever specific task (like changing a piston or cams), you will be able to do the same quality work as a proper mechanic(it will just take longer).

inlet valve problem. could be not timed right, could be not sitting in the valve seat properly, could be anything.. it needs to be looked at by a professional too see what is wrong

You are so stinking funny. ^.^ Engines are not as complicated as they sound, but you did a great job explaining it and I did indeed learn and re-learn a few things. :) The humor had me entertained as well haha!

nah, the intake is always larger.
because its harder to draw in fuel and air than it is to push out exhaust gas

Great vid Spicy! I literally had no idea about the engine I have in my bike (Honda CBR 125) until now. At least if I break it I might have some idea of what's gone wrong :P

i know its not my question but i cant help myself..
By the figures listed on my search you go from 17hp to 24 thats a gain of 7 hp and alot of torque have you ever ridden a 6hp brigs and stratton gokart? imagine that +your current engine the torque figures will jump alot also
i did a similar thing with my pitbike, from 14 hp to about 20 and it has totally transformed my ride +maintenance (may not be much of a issue with the honda) i have also felt the difference or +3mm in a bore its massive

"like an alternator" isn't that exactly what it is? An alternator? I've always thought that whole magnet + coil thing that generates electricity was called an alternator. Thanks for the vid, so good! You got some balls pulling that thing apart, I'd worry it would never go back together for me.
PS: I also learnt that its a rocker cover not a rocket cover haha!

a good way to learn how this works is to buy a 'Haynes Build Your Own V8 Engine' TOY Engine model...you can buy it for 20 - 30 pounds...I saw this video before but building the toy model definetly taught me well, then I came back to this Spicy110 video and it was much better
