I am always grateful of my apostolic upbringing and always enjoy david bernards teachings on these subject because he put it in a very easy way, and many others do the same.
But unfortunatly there are many preachers that have such high inconsistent standards of beliefs that they become stricter than God. They push even other apostolics away as sinners.
Many of us push other believers like our brothers and sisters from the PAW away and other apostolic churches.
We have elevated our standards to acts 2:38 level when it shouldnt be. We have snubbed our noses and looked down on others because they dont fully look like us.

Yes, there are many inconsistencies especially in the very conservative churches. I still believe the Apostolic church is the greatest place next to heaven. I choose to focus on my relationship with God and let God deal with the inconsistencies of others.

You're absolutely right. To those Apostolic believers who can follow holiness standard they must have higher level of understanding to those who can't. They must understand why other believers still struggling to wear modest clothing. Help them as well, encourage them and teach them how.

Great treatment of this topic. Bro. Bernard, you immediately addressed the relevance, set it in the proper context, and used wisdom in explicating how to apply this today. Also, your personal example speaks loudly -- in a good way. I've taken the UPC to task on a LOT of things, but one thing I have never, ever seen, is a UPC pastor (and I've know quite a few) that used his position to enrich himself, or to elevate his own financial situation, but to the contrary, generally, as you pointed out, many LOSE a lot of earning potential (in a materialistic sense) by entering ministry rather than leveraging their intellect and skill out in business.

The main point and bottom line is, don't give the enemy something to snare you with or allows spiritual pride and legalistic mindset to snare you or defile you.
It could be something simple as footwear or clothing or makeup or hair. Keep it simple and stay submitted to God. Don't be contentious or argumentative.

I think wedding rings and watches should be the exception: these days men like their "bling" which is not only gaudy but obnoxious! There is too much temptation to flaunt wealth these days and this is a very good, balanced teaching on the subject. As far as clothes are concerned: "Raise your hands, and touch your toes, if anything shows go change your clothes"

I don’t think it matters at all. What’s the difference with buying nice clothes rather they were expensive or not - buying them to wear to look nice, not to look nice for attention or lust- but be well dressed and ready for the day, and someone wearing earrings or a necklace as a part of their outfit? It’s all articles of clothing to look nice. It’s the internet we hold behind it that matters. Also, jewelry is cheap lol. You don’t have to wear expensive jewelry. However, you don’t have to wear flash dresses and shoes, and makeup styles. You don’t have to wear flashy suits and shirts, you don’t have to wear a lot of jewelry either.
It’s all the same and basically serves the same purpose.

I am a Pentecostal Apostolic from Toronto, Ontario, Canada and in our Jamaican cultural church’s over here, the woman and men are taught to dress modestly (I am however seeing some things creeping in, like those long polished nails) I personally do not believe in wearing what one pastor has called, the *“trinkets of Egypt.”* If I continue to do what I did prior to becoming a Christian what was I saved from?! I endeavour to live a life separated from the world and this means I have to by the Holy Spirit guard my ear gate and eye gate. I do not listen to any secular music or gospel music that sounds like secular music and I do not have a TV (although the Internet can be worse) I am not condemning anyone who does this, but I wouldn’t want a spouse who is ok with the wearing of Jewelry for the Saints or pants for women. I do not currently have a problem with Sisters wearing pants in the gym only or pj’s at home or during hospital admissions. This however, is submitted before the Lord, and if He says to me no pants period, then it’s no pants, period. I submit to Him.

So who or what sets the standard on "costly clothes?" The writer is setting a PRINCIPLE of not putting so much emphasis on these things, he didn't say dont wear it. The women with more money at that time did to show their status!

  • @jackiet5334
    @jackiet5334 11 місяців тому +6

Muslim women are very modest in their apparel, and some to the degree where they wear a Hijab, to cover part of their face. They show kindness and courtesy in public.
Apostolic women want to display modesty as well. And many are kind and courteous in public and church. But we can't always judge a character just by the way one dresses. Anyone can look good on the outside, but the inside of the cup has to be clean also. It's easier to dress and look holy than to actually repent of our double-mindedness. I think some apostolics believe their dress code is a sacrifice unto God and so they get away with dealing with matters of the fruit of the Spirit. The world today needs to see the fruit. When' Rome is burning', they won't care about how short the skirt length is, everyone will show the true fruit by displaying God's love.
A religious dress code (standard) of the UPCI is essential to live out the teaching of the apostles. So what comes first, a clean heart, then the modesty in apparel, or the modesty in apparel first, then the clean heart? Sometimes the UPCI rules feels like the cart before the horse.

A hijab is a head covering that also covers the chest. If the face is being covered with the eye uncovered - it is a niqab. Christian women are required to ALSO wear head coverings while inside the temple (in your vernacular - church building). Just as the man is be uncovered while entering into a holy place - the woman is to be covered. Both are expected to be modest. The veiling of Christian women is expected most parishes, but not always enforced in the strictest sense. I can only think of 3 or 4 women in my parish who do not cover. They are not marginalized in the slightest….
It is fascinating to see the Christian world outside the context of an American context….

I find it sad that this subject is given attention in these times we live in. Women I know are concerned about the rising price of food, heat, rent, cost of living. There may be a segment of the apostolics that like to wear expensive jewelry, but focusing on their behavior is not helping those women who can't even afford the essentials of daily living, let alone jewelry.
If the preachers feel a need to remind women to be modest in apparel in today's economy, they may be a bit tone-deaf about what's going on out there. Women aren't concerned about what or what not to wear, but more about if they can even afford clothing. I know of many apostolic women who can only shop at second-hand stores for their families and themselves. Forget jewelry. It may be fine and prosperous where these pastors live, but I'm certain if these pastors were aware of the less affluent apostolics, living paycheck to paycheck, they might speak a word of encouragement instead.

“Hey. Look at me - I’m gaudy…” that was funny. But, on a serious note - it seems to me the the good Dr Bernard is saying - what he isn’t saying… It seems to me the scriptures do not expressly state all that the point papers of the UPCI organization state…. He speaks of pastors exercising ‘liberty’… in their teaching… about principles … but although he speaks of believers exercising that same liberty to either comply or not to comply … we know culturally, many UPCIers tend to be quick to label folks as ‘walking in the spirit of rebellion’… surely not you… but your neighbor.
What is the message of 1 Tim 2? Is it that women’s sole function is to birth babies so that they may perfect godliness? Be quiet. Be submissive and learn in silence. Birth babies. Nah, I don’t think that’s the essence of this passage.
But the man and the woman are to ‘continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.’ Why? That every aspect of their life is oriented properly… ‘Faithful lives fitting for Prayer’ - that God’s salvific work affect every dimension/arenas/roles that makes us fully human isn’t hindered.
The UPCI shares a heritage with the Wesleyans … Dr Bernard mentions this correctly. The Revivalist period of American Christianity was largely shaped by the Methodists - which gave way to the Holiness Movement - which led into the Azusa Street Revival - which led to the Brush Arbor Movement - which led to the ‘issue’ that would split the largest American group when certain preachers were defrocked.
Holy is other. God is holy - meaning God is entirely ‘other’ and has called us to ‘otherness’.
If God has truly moved on your heart that in your ‘liberty’ to not wear jewelry… then do so cheerfully and joyfully. But, you cannot judge your brother or sister for exercising that same liberty in deciding that it isn’t ‘thing’ that would affect God’s redemptive work in their life?
You cannot teach a universal standard when the Scriptures are open ended, loosey-goosey. What does a ‘faithful life fitting for prayer look like?’

    • @RealisticMon
      @RealisticMon 4 місяці тому

      This is spot on.
There is also scripture in Peter stating to not focus on the outside appearance but to focus on the inside.
People use this a lot to back up “you can’t wear jewelry” Bible no where specifically says that.
It’s all apart of being modest and holy. I would see some women who wear earrings and a necklaces . Obviously, not super flashy jewelry. There is a big difference in types of jewelry too.
But these women are so kind and loving to everyone and you know where they stand with God because they praise Him! Some of those women were kind.. some of them were not .
Then I’ve seen apostolic women who attended services who although didn’t wear earring or necklaces, or makeup (that we could see or just not a lot of)were still wearing very flashy outfits and sparkly clothing. Some of these women were also kind and loving! Some of these women were not..
People have got to STOP focusing on how someone is dressed or what they are wearing!! I’m not saying not to be modest and cover up but I am saying that modesty is much more that clothing and jewelry. There is also the intent of what is being warn.
If a woman buys beautiful dress and she likes it because she feels lovely in it and it flattering in a modest way why it buy it and wear it? What is the difference with wearing a dress you find beautiful and want to look nice in and wearing a pair of earring you also like and want to look nice in?
Nothing at all lol! It’s all the same! God is looking at our hearts!

We do wear jewelry. However, as scripture says in Philippians 4:5 we wear it in moderation. Jewelry doesn't matter to God one way or another. The thing is if we are to obey 1 Timothy chapter 2, verse 9, and obey it as it is written, should we not obey the next verses of 11 to 14. "Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression."
And here we have the apostles' doctrine written very plainly and simple. Is the licensing of women pastors apostolic? Or does the UPCI pick and choose verses that fits their personal agenda?

People having differing viewpoints does not make Dr. Bernard dishonest. The beliefs of the upci organization are on the upci website, so, yes, it is a viewpoint of the upci apostolic pentecostal church as a whole. Every person is at a different point in their walk with God, and some play to the technicalities, i.e broaches aren't a necklace sort of thinking. This fact doesn't make him stating the public viewpoint of the organization a falsity.

    • @TheSoulWinnersGuide
      @TheSoulWinnersGuide 11 місяців тому +2

@@pbluvstoast140369 one i made no mention of Dr. Bernard being dishonest and two the video title does not specify upci Apostolics only as you have so mistakingly suggested. The upci does NOT reflect the position of the entire Apostolic movement. In fact the upci represents approximately only 5% to 10% of the broader Apostolic movement in the whole. Additionally, some in the upci do differ in opinion on this subject. The other 90% to 95% of the Apostolic movement worldwide likewise have varying positions on this subject as well. For example, if one were to visit a church in the paw it would likely be found that many ladies wear jewelry. Now one may argue this is allowed in disobedience to scripture but another may argue that context of the source text does not restrict jewelry in instances outside of attempting to sway sexual attraction, as Dr. Bernard points out in the video, which would make motive of the individual prime in judging these scenarios. Ergo, having established these things, to name the video blanketing the entirety of the Apostolic movement insinuating that all Apostolics don't wear jewelry is utterly and blatantly false. I hope you would at least agree to that.

God looks at both, the inside, and the outside. The apostle Paul told the Corinthians, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit perfecting holiness in the fear of God. The flesh here is referring to the outside, and the term spirit here, is referring to the inside. if you don’t think God is concerned at all about the outside, then it would not bother you for a Christian to tattoo his entire face? To put jewelry in his ears on his nose, and on his lips, you don’t think that would offend the Lord? And the term that God does not look at the outside but the inside, that is in reference to God, speaking to Samuel the prophet, when God was choosing a new king for Israel. it had nothing to do with holiness, but had something to do with the heart of the young shepherd David that God was admired with, and wanted him to be the next king of Israel. God sees the inside, yes, but he’s concerned how the outside looks on believers. You can’t say that God would be pleased for a woman to get a mohawk haircut, tattoos on the sides of her head that is bald, jewels on her eyelids, nose and lips, and then say God’s not concerned about that he only looks at the heart? There’s enough common sense and scripture evidence and God’s concerned about the condition of your heart and spirit and also how you look on the outside.

Our dress reveals our heart. It's called a "fashion statement" because it expresses what we really believe...
Holiness of dress is more important than people believe it is...
Dress is spiritual, that's why how the people dressed were important... and even anointing followed mantles and clothes...
I firmly believe how we dress reveals what's really in our hearts... and it IS Heaven or Hell...
God even clothed Adam and Eve in the transgression... why?... because it's REALLY important.
Now, as far as cars and houses...
I believe it's ok to be blessed, but I believe we shouldn't be so quick to take something "extravagant" just because it's offered. I personally believe that the LORD tests us with those interactions.
...many people start getting stuff "given" to them and Satan accomplishes the same goal of Covetousness...
Then we get the Trinitarian "Wealth Transfer" message in the Church... (It's already here now.)

God is not in a culture that is exalted above His name. The Bible doesn’t even tell us what holiness actually is… but it does exist. God may very well require of you - something he does not require of me. It is your responsibility to maintain your calling as you were called… just as it my responsibility to maintain mine as I am called.
Believe. Belong. Become. We are all called to be more… Believe more… Belong more… Become more… This is precisely what 1 Tim 2 is teaching us: Faithful lives fitting for prayer.
What does conversion even look like? In the American Revivalist period - where life in Christ was reduced down to ‘fire insurance’ with the Jesus Saves movement and its variants - all tried to create a repeatable process… and as UPCIers - have a form of this godliness - slightly modified.
You don’t know your own heart. How can you know the heart of another? You cannot see grace - but that manifold grace is already present in the lives of every person you and I encounter. You cannot see the Holy Spirt, the Lord and Giver of Life.. but, He is already present - everywhere present and fills all things. Christ-God assumed our humanity without corruption, that we may put on divinity. If there be any separation between man and God - it is by man’s doing, not God’s doing.
We are called to provoke one another to good works… but we are never to harm one another… because God’s salvific work is performed in Community - in us, through us, above us, below us, beside us. I
It’s easy to place the blame on the ‘backslider’ - but having seen how many Oneness Pentecostals behave… they eat their own more than the evangelicals do. People make mistakes - but, that manifold grace of God just sustains us as we … reorient ourselves through our good deeds… continuing in faith, love, and ‘otherness’ - coupled with self-control.
