  • Alcohol: no substance on the planet is so familiar to us and so unbelievable varied in its effects. It is readily available, and despite its psychoactive, adverse health effects, hardly anyone calls it a drug. But how is it that we can turn a blind eye to the three million alcohol-related deaths that happen each year? The director Andreas Pichler visits several countries, searching for answers concerning what makes us drink, what alcohol does to us, and to what extent the powerful alcohol industry and its lobbyists influences politics and society. He also presents us with ways we can turn the tide. Without being self-righteous or overly-critical, the film will have a lasting effect on the drinking habits of all who watch it.

Alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my husband which brought me into my disastrous journey on Alcohol and cigarettes. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. I drank for 40+ years. Quit in 2020 cold turkey. I had craving the first few weeks, but it wasn't a big deal. I have a theory. I think, that in part, the rehab industry, and the beverage industry, are more profitable, if you could convince the public that it is an addiction, and you are powerless to over come it. They want you to think that you must drink. Rehab success rates at 5 years: near zero. Back in you go, more money and profits. ROund and round you go. A self sustaining industry. Just a theory.

I was a normal American male drinker until about 7 years ago. I never got a DUI or in any real trouble drinking but I know I embarrassed myself a lot but not in a dangerous way. I had my first child at 37 though and it was a boy. For some reason I could never shake the feeling that I never ever wanted my son to see me wasted. I always wanted my kids to see me cool and in control. The logician in me told me the only sure way to ensure my kids from seeing me drunk was to stop getting drunk. So I stopped cold turkey as they say. Most of my peers didn't understand and eventually I got shunned from my social circles that involved drinking. I make sure to never tell someone not to drink and I have loads of "when I was wasted one time" stories but drunk or tipsy people seem not to want to associate with stone sober people. I ended up losing some friends and contacts but thankfully I have my own strong family that I am the head of the household. I do not regret either drinking or stopping drinking I guess I just believe there are times and places during life for everything.
Well it's been about 7 years and I still have not touched a drink and the thought of the taste seems pretty yucky. Maybe after my kids grow up I will have some more drinks but I don't know. All I know is that I am happy with my decision and I am happy and respectful of others decisions.
    Cheers & God Bless

Going into work hungover, reeking of alcohol and getting sent home a couple of times. I finally gave it up two years ago, it was difficult at first but now I don't even think about it anymore, it's just a part of me. I feel much healthier now, I have more money, I have more time (no hangovers), I'm more goal oriented, I'm just a much better person. On average deaths from crack cocaine annually have been about 5,000 although they did peak at about 20,000 in 2021. In comparison, the annual deaths from alcohol are at 175,000 and that's not including other conditions and specific accidents that involve alcohol. And if you done any research you would see that the number of deaths related to alcohol is higher than that of opioids and other drugs. A Reuters study in 2010 determined that alcohol was three times deadlier than cocaine. Although less pure substances like crack are obviously not in the comparison. However, it is worth noting that for all the judgment that hard drugs diluted with chemicals receive, alcohol is indeed a poison and is used in industrial cleaning and other applications similar to chemical products like draino.

Because its about who controls the supply.

Cigarettes and alcohol had a massively negative impact on my life. I am 39 years old, I started smoking at just 12 years old. I started drinking just a year later, and dabbling with drugs with 'friends' where a long and toxic cycle of dependency occurred - I got in with several bad crowds (Who I would never have met had I not picked up cigs or alcohol), and I flunked school (before these addictions, I cared about school, and I had no reason to be hanging out with the wrong crowd). After I dropped out of school, I was in an awful relationship to another one. I was always skint where I was going from one crap job to another. I'd spend weeknights or weekends pissed, up or hungover I'd be defensive or argumentative (sometimes downright nasty) when confronted about another '24 hour bug' by some well-meaning colleague, family or friend. I was really just too embarrassed and ashamed to admit that I was just plain hungover and anxious about when I was having my next drink. I'd eat an insane amount of junk food (my weight ballooned by this point), smoked a pack a day and I repeated that toxic cycle for almost 20 years until last year, I had a very serious health scare with shooting pains up my left arm, and an extremely serious spiritual warning that I wouldn't live to see 2024 if I didn't quit that month (September 2023). I listened to the warning, I prayed to God, and I pleaded with Him, I cried for Him to take my addictions from me. Now, I am not saying this is some fancy schmancy happy ever after, it's not. Recovery is not an easy road at all. I have to take mood medication to help control my worst emotion: anger, and I have to constantly control my sugar intake (the brain might try to replace these addictions with sugar or fast food). Anyways! One step at a time! I sincerely hope for all those in that awful toxic cycle that I was once in, I hope they know there is a way out, and it's not easy but they're worth the fight xx

I cannot function or remember anything for the most part. my motor skills are deteriorating. I ripped my stomach lining to the point that i'm done drinking and years later it still aches me every second of the day. Drinking rots your body and mind. I drank $2 vodkas, malt liquor, straight GARBAGE day and night to the point i had multiple alcohol withdraw seizures. It was more than addiction and just living in fear of seizures and insane withdraw. I don't even know why I thought getting blackout drunk was "fun" or I needed to do it. I’m 34 and have been a social drinker throughout my 20’s and now up til my mid 30’s. I never considered myself the type that loses control but as with most drinkers, I admit I have embarrassed myself on a couple of occasions and way more than I would’ve liked to.
My dad passed away in September of 2022 from cirrosis. He was indeed dependent on alcohol and could be considered a “functioning alcoholic” as he never called in sick over a hangover, got a DUI or caused anyone any real harm, except for himself of course.
I am from Mexico and drinking is very imprinted into our culture. We drink for every occasion and if there isn’t one, then we drink to make things happen.
I have been flirting with the idea of quitting cold turkey but always find myself lost in thoughts of FOMO. What happens when I go to the UK and finally visit a Premier League match? Will I miss out on the pub crawl with my fellow United supporters? But what about when my fiancé and I are married and want to go wine tasting in Italy? What about gatherings with friends? And Christmas/New Years? Etc etc etc
I’ve never considered myself an alcoholic but the thought of drinking the way my dad did in his last decade of life terrify me.
If anyone has any advice or words of encouragement for me to help with quitting cold turkey. I would highly appreciate it.
    Thank you kind strangers.

I never drank because I am a Muslim, but whenever I would go out with friends in the past who did drink, I always was so happy I did not drink. I would watch them falling apart during the night, vomiting, crying, talking non stop nonsense, fighting, falling and the next day they would feel like crap and still vomiting. I would always help them or even try to persuade them to take it easy. But I never understood why anyone would disgrace themselves like that. Watching them, was only a big confirmation for me that drinking is just self harming. Also when going on holidays with friends, they were not able to wake up early due to the hangover to do some sight seeing. There is no better feeling than waking up early, fit and rested for the day, and why anyone would exchange that for a hangover is beyond me. Last but not least, I have worked at multiple international companies where we had drinks each Friday afternoon or on special occasions. I did not drink, but other colleagues did. I went like a couple of times and after that I decided I would never attend these drinks again. After a few drinks you see people change and getting rude and obnoxious. Now wherever I work, I make it clear in advance that I do not attend any drinking occasions or a night out , period. I just want to stay away from these "social " events where people drink.

I am Nigerian and I'm aghast at the alcohol epidemic in Nigeria.
It really is an epidemic and the sachetization has made it very accessible to both the young and the old.
The Government has tried several times to implement policies that would reduce the epidemic, but one way or the other, implementation just goes into thin air.
Alcohol is one of the major contributor to the violence of the popular agberos (touts and hooligans) in Lagos especially.
I wish something permanent can be done to help stop or at least reduce the impact of this drug in my country

He works physically and outside in glorious weather.
He isn’t like a person sitting in a delivery vehicle for 8 - 10 hrs a day or sitting in an office for hours after sitting commuting to work for hours and then drinking chemical enhanced big brand drinks and mixing the types of products.

When i was with my ex, his family loves to drink and it sort of makes me appreciate a good social drink. When we broke up, i sort of looked for that same comfort feeling by drinking. And i really appreciate my drink tbh, the level of wooziness and calmness it brings to my being. Then headaches and uncomforted feeling the next day starts to sink in and as healthcare professional- i knew it’s not sustainable to have a particular liking to alcohol. Looking back, i don’t think ill ever had that feeling of comfort again without consciously being aware of its implications.
