  • The Windermere Way is a circular route around the largest lake in the Lake District, England. A number of hills are visited to ensure good panoramic views are obtained to capture the full length of this iconic beautiful lake of Cumbria. The views are stunning and the weather is kind, why not join me for a virtual tour of this iconic lake.

This video starts in Bowness-on-Windermere by the waters edge of Lake Windermere. From here we witness the early morning scenes before the ferries are called into action to transport the tourist to the ends of the lake. On the outskirts of Bowness we visit Cockshott Point which provides a jut of land that enables a relatively close view of Belle Isle. We then visit the marina to see all the individual boats which collectively cover all the sizes and class allowed on Lake Windermere.
Now we head in a south east direction away from the shores to gain some hight on the heights of Brant Fell. From here we see our first panoramic views where we can see significant portions of the lake both in the north and south. We also, have a similar experience on Gummer's How but on this occasion it is mainly the south part of the lake that comes into view. We especially highlight Newby Bridge as that is our main objective for the morning portion of the journey.
Eventually we get to Newby Bridge which enables us to cross over to the west side of Lake Windermere. From here we begin the head in a northern direction. The original plan was to be able to walk through some woods but storm damage has shut a lot of local paths so we are forced to walk along the roads until we reach Lakeside. At Lakeside we are able to view the steam engine and the steam boat where the timetables are coordinated to enable the transfer of tourist between the two forms of historic transport.
We then continue initially along the road before eventually joining the lakeside as we take the footpaths that are now adjacent to the lake. After a few miles we come across the national trust restored victorian viewing station of Claire Heights. From here we can see the ferry that provides a crossing service of the lake and is often used by the public passing between Bowness and Hawshead. We can see more views of the lake from various open windows in the ancient monument. Of note, is the various coloured glass that is used in the outside of these windows which dabbles the evening light.
We now gain further height on the western side of the lake within the ancient woods to find a wild camping spot. From here we can see the bright lights of Bowness-on-Windermere with Cockshott Point and Belle Isle in view, confirming we are virtually opposite our start point.
Now we depart the following morning using the high level route that follows the line of the lake on the western side. On this high level route we witness many fallen trees that frequently block our path. Eventually we drop down and join the lakeshore path and eventually come across the entrance to Wray Castle. This we admire but time is pressing so we head towards Skelwith Bridge. We spend sometime watching the sparkling waters of the River Breathy before sitting down for a break and the nearby cafe. Sitting outside of the cafe at the wooden bench and table a Robin Red Breast steals (in a very cheeky way) some of our cake. On the wall of the cafe we note a drinking water tap which we use to resupply our water needs.
Next we head uphill and along the nearby road to Loughrigg Tarn, Here we embrace the quiet solitude as we walk across the fields around the tarn. Then we head over the fells to Ambleside. We then pass through the park at Ambleside to climb Wansfell Peak. Here we admire the views before heading to the next view point which is Orrest Head. This is very near Windermere so we head down the hill to Windermere Station to finish our walk.

There's now a brand new path that has been made from The Swan Hotel to Lakeside. Then on from there to the YMCA, so the road is completely avoided. They must of watched your video and did something about it! Keep your vids coming, they're always brilliant to watch.

Glad you enjoyed it, and yes you can certainly walk the complete circuit. Also, in the comments a viewer has informed me that the path on the east side has been improved being safer off the road. Thanks for the watch and comment. Cheers, Nigel

I came across a Victorian post box a few months ago. It was at a little place called Bowick, not far from Carnforth, Lancs. Not seen one before. Enjoyed the video.

Another very enjoyable video. We’ve walked in the lakes for years so are familiar with your route though we’ve not ventured around the southern area of Windermere itself. You did a great job getting all the way around in 2 days.

Glad you enjoyed the video. Must admit the southern end was new for me as well, but as always with the Lakes venturing on to new ground gave me such pleasure. Appreciate the view and comment. Cheers, Nigel

Thanks for your fantastic videos. But please pay attention to the weight of your backpack. It might cause problems to your spine if it's too heavy.

Glad you didn’t hurt yourself too badly. Do you think you’ll hike the Appalachian Trail sometime?

Yes just a minor stumble, to make sure I pay attention. I have hiked in the US in the distant past but I don't think the AT is for me. I might consider other US trails, but for now I have a very long list of UK trails I want to complete. Thanks for your interest and I do appreciate your constant support. PS I do have a Community Tab on my channel page which you might enjoy, at some point I will be posting future plans for next year. Cheers

Hi Paul, unfortunately it's caused by UA-cam publishing it on the lowest setting. It thinks it is helping you by limiting the amount of data you are using, you can change this in your settings. I will post something in the community tab on my channel page explaining how to do it, just give me 15 mins or so. Nigel
