- The Mark Twain Prize recognizes people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist and creator of memorable characters, Samuel Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled and outraged many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective of social injustice and personal folly. He revealed the great truth of humor when he said "against the assault of laughter nothing can stand."

The inaugural Mark Twain Prize was presented to Richard Pryor during the first annual Kennedy Center Celebration of American Humor, October 20, 1998. The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber and is televised annually. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception. Previous recipients of the Mark Twain include Richard Pryor (1998), Jonathan Winters (1999), Carl Reiner (2000), Whoopi Goldberg (2001), Bob Newhart (2002), Lily Tomlin (2003), Lorne Michaels (2004), Steve Martin (2005), Neil Simon (2006), Billy Crystal (2007), George Carlin (2008), Bill Cosby (2009, rescinded in 2018) Tina Fey (2010), Will Ferrell (2011), Ellen DeGeneres (2012), Carol Burnett (2013) Jay Leno (2014), Eddie Murphy (2015), Bill Murray (2016), David Letterman (2017), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (2018).

I believe it’s bc to be funny and to know how to make ppl laugh you have to be truly empathic. To be selfless and a vessel to make others happy. Those ppl tend to be deeper in general.
It takes more intelligence than people realize to be truly funny. That’s also why none of the current late night talk show hosts are funny.
I clicked here thinking to laugh..I did of course.It's Bill Murray for Christ Sake..But he moved me to almost tears when his speech went into the part about caring about yourself & Others..Like he said "What a break..We're here alive.Pretty good right?"..Sometimes I forget that..So Cheers to everyone alive in 2020!
And now into Sept 2021 which many among us may have wondered, over the past year and a half, if they would ever see. With heaviness in our hearts for those who did not.

Bill Murray seems very vulnerable, honest and nervous. He stands behind the little chair protecting himself from an event he might too well have dreaded. Despite all his success I think he is insecure. That is such a huge plus. I like him even more now.
It's so perfectly Irish-Catholic to praise your brother and then tweak him in the same breath. God, he's a classic. As one of eight who adores his siblings (and from the same town as Bill Murray) this was perfect. What a pure treasure he is.

I was blown away on GroundHog Day. I was speechless when I saw Lost in Translation - he should have won the Oscar for that. His acting range makes me envious of his talent.
If you have never watched a video breaking down how long his character was in a time loop I would recommend it, it adds a bit more perspective to his character development.
Groundhog Day remains my all time favorite movie. It was the very first DVD I ever bought. I could watch that movie over & over.
Groundhog Day is basically a mainstream It's A Wonderful Life rural version of Scrooged. Scrooged should be regarded as the more important film but rural fantasy tends to be appreciated by more people than urban fantasy.
Never liked any of his films...

I love Bill Murray! This was a heartwarming speech. I think his best movies are Ghostbusters, St Vincent, and Groundhog Day.... although he is GREAT in everything he does!

You know this is a great speech about humble beginnings and thriving on the generosity and love of others. And Bill Murray is a great guy. But he’s also becoming a relic. Today we are about money. Period. Computers and algorithms are sterilizing us. It’s sad.

3:10 hearing him talk about DC makes me miss living in that area. I used to go to the National Mall every weekend for years. But.. then I remember the insane cost of living and awful traffic.

BILL MURRAY is an American Treasure and knowing him,he'll probably hate being called that but he is.His laid back comedic additude is 100%REAL.I've been a fan of his for years and he truly deserves the mark Twain award even though he says he Dreads getting one now that's real nothing fake about that.

It's more of a genuine "thank you" from him as opposed to a "look at me" moment.
The Kennedy center should get the award for rescinding the award from bill Cosby in 2018. Or for giving him the award in 2009. Both super funny

My enduring dream, Is to attend a celebrity golf tournament that Bill is attending, To see him walking up the fairway close enough for me to shout " Phil !.. Phil !!.
