Pruning My Acacia Trees, The Bonsai Zone, August 2024

- I'm pruning my Acacia trees that I grew from seeds in 2016. Acacia trees are know as Acaciella, Mariosousa, Senegalia and Vachellia and are an icon of the African savanna, but various species of acacias occur in many other warm, tropical, and desert-like regions of the world, too.
Until recently, they all belonged to the same genus, Acacia. Today botanists have renamed many of the species, grouping them in five separate genera. In addition to the genus Acacia-which still includes more than 1,000 species, mostly from Australia-acacias include the following recent genera:
Senegalia includes more than 200 species, mostly from the Americas, Africa, and Asia
Vachellia includes more than 160 species from the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific
Mariosousa includes 13 species from the southwestern US through Costa Rica
Acaciella includes 15 species, all from the Americas.

Alberta Canada is crazy weather I’m impressed with how you manage to keep tropical plants so well maintained.👍
Wow place is looking good. You pot collection is great Nigel 👍
Looks like a scene out of a real forest...Really nice to look at...Looking forward to the repotting and styling in the Spring...Thanks for yet another great video...Sequim, WA...
Thanks Nigel now that song is stuck in my head.. "Come Out And Play - by The Offsprings" Amazing lol
That was great that Michael came over to help you weed and to help with the other things you needed help on.
Cool updates and the acia pruning was great. We have some nice cool weather from the north. We had the dark clouds all day long. No rain though. Still cloudy this evening.
Wow, I didn't know roosters would do that! Your bonsai look great. 😁
Lovely group of trees there, I was discouraged from trying to plant these cause of thorns, though they are prized for helping in dental care, anyway have 2 now and have started 2 cuttings from them, still a long way to go, thank you for the video
I went to Key West in Florida for spring break and the Sweet Acacia was one of the first plants I looked closely at and I immediately got some seed pods and opened them, threw the cases away and the seeds passed through the TSA scanners fine and I planted them and now they are a foot tall! I plan on overwintering them on a bright window sill or the brightest place in the house where ever that is lol.
the pots looks so nice organized
but i worry they will absorb water and suffer an erosion effect if allowed to freeze
envious of your many excellent trees Nigel
You always post when i am watering my plants!! 🤣
Love the natural look of the Acacia trees. Am slowly getting back into it.
Really neat trees! Can’t wait for the spring repotting.
🎵Gotta keep 'em separated!🎵
I noticed that too. 😂
Thanks Nigel..👍🌳🌲
❤😊
Looking forwards to seeing it repotted and the new landscape. Trees look great .
👍👌👌
"You gotta keep em separated". Ain't that right!
My goodness that acacia forest looks like it's been there for decades!
You have more spare pots than I have tree's..😅😅
i enjoy your backyard garden. what state do u live in...i live in cali its crispy hot now, looks lush there.
These guy remind me of when I grew up in Hawaii , make me want to go back and visit - :)
Nigel, I’d love to see an update of your water jasmine at some point - how is it doing??
have emailed you mate. may be in junk folder :)
I love your process. I’m torn on what to do with my three acacia trees. I started them from seen 4yrs ago. I’ve trimmed a bit here and there but they have long trunks and most of the foliage is at the top on long branches. Not sure how to mange it.
I live in South Africa
The average min temp in Johannesburg is 5deg c
Gets to -1 when we have a cold front. My acacias stay outside
Thanks so much, it may be more of a duration problem? Mine stay at 10 C for 5 months at least! Do you think this is too long? Maybe the temperature is good! How long do your Acacia's stay cool?
Thanks so much John, any tips or thoughts are welcome!!!
Was that an Offspring lyric? “Gotta keep em separated”
Oh yes, posting when I just started myself a mixed variety forest bonsai from seed
I am curious why you store your pots upside down.
Hey Nigel do you have logwood? Would love to see you work on one
I’ve been searching for a logwood or logwood seeds here in Europe and it seems impossible to find… I love the leaves on logwoods
Looks like I just missed a premiere????
