    Watching this reminds me of one particular episode of the RTV series, 'Alaska: the last frontier'. Some of the Kilcher family were being plagued by a particular porcupine: in the midst of important tasks, they had to stop to de-quill a dog, a horse and a calf. The critter was so bold and bolshy it made a real nuisance of itself. until one of the Kilchers decided to hunt it down and shoot it, whereupon it became dinner. My dad and I refer to the episode as the 'Bald-Ass Porcupine' episode ( we did get to see the varmint, whose rear end was indeed denuded of quills) and the resultant meal at the end of it as 'Bald-Ass Porcupine Stew'.

    There are discrepancies in this video.
    African porcupine quills are not barbed. They are smooth, so they don’t tend to migrate. Only the new world porcupines have the barbs and that notorious migrating problem. Also, north american porcupines have a waxy resin on their quills that provides a natural antibiotic, because porcupines are clumsy and tend to accidentally quill themselves rather frequently (their quills are twice as sharp as hypodermic needles), so infections are fairly infrequent. Also, they cannot shoot quills. That’s like saying you can shoot your hair.
    I’m working towards a M.S. in the study of hystrix, because porcupines are the best creatures pretty much ever.

    Important addendum:
    If you must, you should only use your own spit to lick your wounds. Every human has a unique mouth flora (bacteria and stuff that live in your mouth). While you enjoy limited immunity against your own, the saliva of others has a far higher risk of leading to serious infection.

    • @justicetaylor3050

      'Limited immunity' what?

    • @Salted_Fysh
      @Salted_Fysh 2 роки тому +1

      @@michealk9646 your immune system is somewhat tuned to the bacteria in your mouth and gut (due to coming in contact with them through nicks and cuts). The same can't be said for the bacterial composition of other people.
      That being said, I will admit that this is something I've heard or read quite a while ago and I haven't bothered to verify it for this post. So it could be nonsense.
      Either way, licking superficial wounds is probably fine since saliva contains anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial compounds as well as promoting blood clots and aiding in wound healing. But especially for deeper cuts, where the bacteria can get deeper inside the wound, you should probably stick with water, soap, antiseptics and band-aids.

    Can you explain how one minute they are "not exactly sterile" then the next minute they are coated in antibacterial oils and beneficial to the porcupine? Kind of lost me on that one

      not sterile refering to the pins. antibacterial refering to surface of their skin

      @Rob Peters no... 4:20 he specifically says the quills are coated. Not the skin. Why say that if you just have no idea?

    Porcupine doesn't shoot their quills, it just sticks to predator when they touch it.
