39 years ago today, at my beloved Municipal Stadium, Large Lenny Barker was perfect, as was Cleveland baseball (at least for 1 night). It still gives me chills, and more than a little sorrow for the years that have flown by.
I, along with 1,000,000 other residents of NE Ohio was there in person that day. J/K of course....I was 9 year old boy watching on TV. I recall my dad telling me that Baker really had his curveball working. After 5 perfect, we started to get excited. Barker had a total of 125 pitches. He struck out 11.
back when they let pitchers keep throwing until they gave up a hit, i hate how they take them out during a no hitter now, combined no hitters just aren’t the same
My daughter, born 1982, when she was about 28, comes home and tells me while volunteering on the beer cart at a charity celebrity golf outing, met "some guy" who "did something good" while pitching for the Indians. "Les Baker" or something like that. "Len Barker?" "Yeah, that's him. What did he do?" Kids.
Anyone else watch this one ? I was in late grade school or early pre HS, and my habits in evenings were to watch tribe games and practice my guitar, and I watched this whole game, what a game!! ShoutOut to my old stomping grounds, 440, 216, 330 ! NE Ohio
This happened to be my final day of high school (actual graduation was a week later). Unusual in that I don't frequently watch baseball on television. The game happened to be on, and after a few innings of 3 up 3 down I got interested.
Lol , this is true ! Everyone claims they were there, I did however , watch on TV, the whole game, what an experience... Len Barker was one of their better pitchers, I think Miguel Diloné was on the team, that catcher who caught ANOTHER perfect game for a different team, and of course, Mike Hargrove , Blyleven, the Great Andre Thornton, Manning (?) Ron hassey, I can't recall anymore , Not really a great record that year but what a game this wa s.
@@klaytonvonkluge4905 Yes, Manning was on that team. He caught the final out. Joe Charboneau (lf), and Kuiper (2b) were also on that team... I watched it on TV in my parent's basement on WUAB Channel 43 (I was 8). I can still hear the call to this day. I hardly knew what was going on, but I knew enough to know that it was special. #GoTribe
@@th4uv3tt38 me too ! (Wuab 43 ) and YEAH man, I remember Charboneaux and definitely, there was a palatable magic in the air, something special, like , em event that happens but once in a lifetime .... Incredible !
LOL..I know everyone says they were there but....i was there , i delivered beers to the lodges (i was like 14) it was a different time for sure, no one cared i was under age at that time...me and the other two guys i worked with would go see what these guys were driving, lol,,,,,lenny barker drove a pos vega with beer cans in the back seat, lol, lol,,i cant make this up
You got that right ! My people's in North East Ohio got sooo made at me when I started following the Red Sox (Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski, Dwight Evans, etc) But I always was a Tribe fan first and foremost

Did you watch on TV , (it was televised, I watched this game) or were you there?
@klaytonvonkluge4905,
Neither... I listened to it on the late, great 1100 WWWE.

I watched this one too! I watched from Middlefield Ohio, I was a little older than you (maybe 11 or 12) what a GAME !

The catcher Ron Hassey would catch another perfect game in 1991 from Dennis Martinez.
He's the only catcher to catch two perfect games in the MLB!
Nice , I didn't know this !! Great stats
A great moment during a dark period in Cleveland baseball.......
Rick Manning was my favorite player as a kid, even though he couldn't hit
Tony Iacomi bad hitting coaches.
The fans would boo him mercilessly. I was only 9. I always felt bad for him.
Mike Hargrove was mine. I got in trouble with my little league coach for trying to imitate his batting routine
He telecasts Cleveland's games now.
I always liked Manning too
How can you not love baseball when any average player can make history like this?

The game that every Clevelander "attended," even though there were only 7,290 in attendance.

There was Hargrove. At that time, we Indians fans had little to celebrate so these things were special.
You got that right !
My people's in North East Ohio got sooo made at me when I started following the Red Sox
(Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski, Dwight Evans, etc)
But I always was a Tribe fan first and foremost
The olden days when the fans could run out on the field and not get arrested or banned from the stadium.
Yes, and the players are glad those days are over!!
Fans actually liked players.
..and since I was under 14 years old, I could go to the games for $1.00
I never noticed how hittable that last pitch was. Ernie just missed it.
Lenny! ❤️
75.000 there that rainy night lol.
LOL. If you believe some of the people I know, all of Cleveland was there that night!
Len Bob Barker.....come on down!
I was there! I wasn’t born until 7 months later, but just ignore that.
My mom was at that game! She really misses municipal stadium.
My uncle went to this game
what was great about this MLB didn't have a perfect game since 1969 when Catfish Hunter of Oakland threw one .....took 11 years
1968. Catfish Hunter vs. Minnesota Twins.
Who else came here after we almost had a no hitter yesterday
Indians RULE!!!!🤣😀
I wish
Quite a memorable moment for the 6k fans in attendance.
The left fielder looks like he wants to congratulate the center fielder. Why?
I did not see it that way.
hahahahhaha.
Mighty Joe Charbenno?
Manning should have thrown that ball to a fan.
