As a DOT certified Traffic Officer, I can 100% confirm you are correct. Moreover, as someone who spent the first 15 years of their time as a driver driving big pickup trucks and hauling, when you are hauling a trailer with thousands of extra pounds, the responsibility is on YOU to make sure YOU give EXTRA space in front of you and apply EXTRA caution before proceeding because YOU are FING HEAVY and it will take MUCH more distance and time to come to a STOP in an EMERGENCY.

Recently there was a woman in front of me as we approached a roundabout. There was nobody in the vicinity besides the two of us. She came to a complete stop at the beginning of the roundabout, then turned on her blinker, then I saw her looking back and forth several times. She finally slowly pulled into the roundabout, went halfway around, then came to another complete stop, put on her blinker again, then slowly pulled off the roundabout. Was she "well within her right to stop regardless of the traffic in the roundabout"? Absolutely not. She was impeding traffic, same as the person in this video. That's dangerous and illegal.

Both cars would have been able to successfully clear the way of the white car to the left WITHOUT needing to yield to them. The cammer was also carrying heavy items as well which made the task of stopping in time more difficult.

@@ChromaKeyMystress Yes... which is how roundabouts work. I have a traffic circle in my town that I drive through every single day. That SUV was over 20 yards away and the jeep could have simply continued. Worst case scenario the white SUV might need to slow down a bit to let the semi pass, but other than that, no harm no foul. You're acting like the SUV was like right at the sign, and it wasn't.
No one in my town would have stopped for that SUV, they would have continued, and nothing bad would have happened.
It's not being safe, it's being overly cautious and disturbing the flow of traffic unnecessarily. You only STOP at yield signs if a vehicle is too close by the time you reach the sign or if there is a line of traffic approaching, but you can see traffic coming a mile away and should be able to judge what you should do regardless, not come to a dead stop like the jeep and semi did. I would have already spotted the SUV well before I reached the sign, and if it is already closely approaching the sign I would have simply slowed down, let it pass, then continue.
*That is how roundabouts work. They are not INTERSECTIONS, they are designed to allow traffic flow.* Yield signs are not STOP signs, you are generally supposed to slow down. You only stop at yield signs if necessary, but you should already be able to see traffic approaching and slow down to allow them to pass without any need to stop. If you fail to do so, that's on you.
Both the cammer and jeep were wrong. Stopping was unnecessary but not illegal.

Cammer may well have not needed to stop if not for the lead car. The lead car is full-stopped for about 7 seconds before the vehicle in the circle passes that point. Probably enough time for both to enter; certainly enough for the lead car to have cleared and give the cammer a bit of extra braking distance. It's one thing if it's a blind corner but this is a roundabout during the day with one vehicle in the circle. Visibility doesn't get much better than that.
The thing with Yield signs is you only stop if you need to. You don't treat it like a stop sign, where you always stop regardless of the presence of traffic. Moving into the circle is no different from merging onto a freeway; you move forward unless you cannot.

A protected green arrow DOES mean that the U-Turn has the right of way, UNLESS a U-turn is illegal by state law, local ordinance, or traffic control signage (*we don't see the light facing the white car so the assumption is that it was red and not displaying a green right-turn arrow*). Since the driver of the white car was making a right-on-red maneuver, the white car MUST yield to other traffic.
I would have absolutely used my horn in this circumstance and it would have been justified to let the other driver know they f'd up. I would NOT have sped around them in an attempt to "educate" them. That is where the cammer screwed up, not the horn honk.

@@austin5856 That's incorrect. A protected green arrow protects the direction the arrow is pointing only. A left green arrow protects left hand turns and right green arrow protect right turns. There are also protected green uturn lights although they are rare.
It's common for a green right turn to be on at the same time as a green left is for the perpendicular street which is exactly what happened in the video. The protected left does not overwrite a protected right in the case of uturns.

FALSE. There has to be a sign that says "NO U-Turns" for the cam car to be wrong, and there wasn't. Look up the rules for turning on red. To make that right turn, there must be no traffic in the intersection and it must be safe. The only way to make sure it is safe is to wait to see what the cam car is going to do. Cam vehicle has a protected green which allows him to turn left OR make a U-Turn. Other vehicle has to stop. Period.

@@trailerwookie Yes u turns are legal. but the Cam car made a couple of mistakes that put him at fault.
      1. He didn't pull into the near lane before moving to the far lane. This would have prevented the incident and is the law in most areas and common sense in all.
      2. The white suv started his turn before the truck entered the intersection. This gives him the right of way.
      3. He went to fast through the intersection and clearly didn't look where he was going or else he would've seen the suv turning.
      4. He immediately sped up to tailgate the white suv and layed on the horn. this shows he is not a considerate, calm or thoughtful driver.

Cool that you have a protected green arrow, but most people (myself included) are thinking you're going to turn left, not pull a u-turn. If you had turned left, unless it's posted that you can't, he's perfectly free to turn right on red. Honestly, lots of people will use you turning left as a barrier to them turning right, because oncoming traffic will run into you before it runs into them. All this to say, maybe, just maybe, you go, "Ah. He thought I was turning left. That's why he went. Makes sense." Not everyone on the road is out to get you. Have a little grace. None of us is a mind reader. If you're that quick to anger, I don't think you can handle the responsibility of operating a motor vehicle. Good grief.

  • @Procrastinator1948

The reason that the truck jacknifed in the first vid is because he had no trailer brakes. No brakes in mostly fine with an empty trailer, but once you add weight it's a whole different story. In his case, that's not a lightweight trailer, despite being empty, and he also probably had no weight in the pickup bed, so with the trailer pushing, and the light tail on the pickup, the truck brakes locked up and that was the result. And from the looks of that old pickup, I'd bet that he was running near bald rubber on it also.

In the UK, the only trailers that are allowed to be unbraked are tiny, light weight 2-wheel things. Once it gets over a certain weight it is a legal requirement to have working brakes. A four wheel trailer of that size must have working brakes.

      @LeScratch89 5 місяців тому +5

Protected green includes u-turns unless there's also a green arrow for the right turn on the cross side. If cross traffic has a red or blinking yellow, they have to yield to a u-turn. If both are green, the u-turn yields. It's not hard.
The road rage would get him cited by police though, or more likely arrested.

@@LeScratch89 Green arrows give the driver priority in making their turn as indicated. That is the instance in the video.
Again there is no method for signaling for a u-turn thus you should use caution when making your merge into the new direction of travel.
In intersections without a signal to control traffic priority is for the right turning traffic not the left.
So again I raise you this question, how is a driver making a right hand turn to know that the driver in the left turn lane is making a u-turn?
      They simply can not know.
How then should the two parties proceed to safely navigate the risk of a collision where there is no means of communicating that a u-turn is being performed?
It is best for the left turning individual who will be making the u-turn to pay attention to the traffic also making their merge in the same direction of travel with them and being unable to communicate to them what they are doing, cautiously yield to the other driver.
Again the right turning individual has no means of knowing they are making a u-turn, this is why the left turning driver should practice caution not assume the right of way regardless of a green arrow.
Blinkers communicate intent of the driver and there is no u-turn blinker as of yet.

@@cal5444 Easy, and it's already in place: Red light. Yield to all traffic in the intersection period. If there's a conflict, such as a green right arrow, post a sign as the other person below you indicated. There is no such sign here, which leads us to believe one of two things: there is no green right arrow, which means all right-turn-on-red traffic should yield; or the municipality has created a conflict by mistake and needs to correct it (by way of being informed or by lawsuit)
And it's easy to see a u-turner once they begin the maneuver. I deal with U-turns as the right-turning-on-red vehicle frequently and have never had a close call. Pay attention; it's easy.

@@LeScratch89 They began at the same timing. Again right turning traffic has the right of way in a situation like this, you can argue all you want but if any adjuster looked at this accident they would deem cammer at fault. I've worked cases like this, its not up for debate this is how it is. You can tell someone when you turn right and left you can not communicate a u-turn as vehicles are designed today. Regardless of a protected arrow, the arrow is for left turning traffic, not u-turning traffic. It is a protected left not a protected left and u-turn signal. Again any agent would find cammer at fault from a resulting accident.
