  • Now that we've all been able to process the new Watches and Wonders releases from the likes of Tudor, Rolex, and Patek Philippe, I think it's time to do a deeper dive into what is the biggest release of the year. The Tudor Black Bay 58 GMT. This is a watch that we've been asking for for years and we finally have it in a fantastic package that is only 12.8mm. Given it's significance, the watch world should be lauding the release universally right? Well, not quite.
    So in this video I'm going to look into why the BB58 GMT is giving me cause for concern even though I’ve gone through a rollercoaster of emotions and opinions about the watch. At the moment, I'm on the optimistic end of this wild ride. I'll also look into two problems the BB58 GMT is experiencing, the first one concerning the watch design itself and the second one concerning where we are as a watch community and how our tastes have evolved.

    Since its the first Master Chronometer GMT from Tudor, watch, in the next 10-20 years its going to be desirable. Especially, when identifying one in the future, its the gilt that people will like it for and most likely the patina that will settle in the bezel in those years. In 20+ years, the most hated element will become the most desirable.

      Tudor always has to do something unattractive - like a riveted bracelet, too much gilt, raspy dull speckle dial- so it can not actually be a Rolex

    The new bb58 gmt is a no brainer. The execution of the gold tones requires less commitment than a Longines Zulu time gmt s&g for example. Tudor's alure has been in no small part retro vibes. If you want more modern design options in a Tudor diver Pelagos hasn't gone anywhere. I would have liked the option for a five link bracelet or fabric strap, but the former wouldn't be "correct" and the latter can be managed post-purchase. If i was in the market for a GMT this would be on the short list.

      I think this BB58 GMT has the potential to look really good fingers crossed it looks great in real life. It'll definitely be super interesting to compare the BB58 GMT with the Longines SZT different in terms of the overall aesthetic but quite similar in specs now. Once Longines gets around to putting the hydroconquest GMT's quick adjust clasp on the SZT then things will get spicy😬

    I still feel the same as when it came out. It's great they finally have a new movement and make the GMT thinner and in 39mm. BUT, IT'S STILL NOT WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR AND WANT EXACTLY. Thus, I'm holding out on frivolous spending when I know it will not scratch the itch. It's the first iteration of its kind and there will surely be more.
    What will I buy in the (future, fingers crossed )Tudor GMT 39mm line? Not necessarily in this order..
    #1 Pepsi Bezel, Opaline White Dial, Jubilee Bracelet w/ T-Fit
    #2 Polar BB Pro
    Not a BB...
    #3 Pelagos 39 GMT
    Oh, I would like a BB58 steel (u know the one with the black dial and as bezel they had in 41mm) finally, please.
    In either cases, gilt is not in my future. Though, I will say the new coke BB58 GMT with gilt looks good with it.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Місяць тому +1

      I forgot about the opaline dial! my god a BB58 GMT opaline dial would be absolutely fantastic but with zero gilt otherwise it'll be worse. But yeah it'll be exciting to see what they release in the future bc this is a great movement and as you listed, there are so many potential great watches

  • @word42069
    @word42069 Місяць тому +1

    Objectively the new GMT is a more exciting release but the problem is.. like you mentioned.. the (overdone imo) gilding and the lack of a five-link bracelet option. It’s simply less fitting for all occasions and thus the monochrome wins out for most buyers. Bring the same monochrome changes to the BB58 GMT and they’ll see it sell like crazy. For that reason I’m going to sit in the sidelines for now.. getting a Hamilton Expedition and maybe pick up a Hydroconquest GMT as a value play… and just save up after for a bigger purchase.

    The master chronometer text should have been above the GMT text to make the dial more balanced. Otherwise a pretty nice GMT but it doesn't beat a used Explorer II 16570.

  • @anthonystevens8683
    @anthonystevens8683 Місяць тому

    You make some great points TWI. I think almost all manufacturer press photos are edited in some way to make the new products look at there very best from the makers viewpoint, but what the manufacturer wants us to see is quite often different to what we see in real life as you mention. I'm not in the market for another GMT right now but if I was It would probably end up with a shootout between the Tudor and the 39mm Longines Spirit Zulu time. Right now I'd probably lean slightly towards the Longines. OK that watch is not METAS but it is COSC. Maybe Tudor will release this movement into a Pelagos 39 case now that would interest me more. For me with most things there is some sort of compromise from what we really want to what we end up getting unless we get something custom made. Not only has the BB GMT shrunk in the wash in size and thickness to become a 39 but is also METAS certified and for the price on paper it's perfect. But the buyer will be the one looking at it and if they are not happy with the look other options are around. Like you my advice is to always try one on and see it in the flesh. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks as always Anthony! Yeah a comparison between the BB58 GMT and the Spirit Zulu Time will be coming fairly soon after getting my BB58 GMT and it'll be an interesting one for sure bc there are so many thing I like about both of them! Although once Longines comes around to fitting the SZT with a quick adjust clasp then things really spice up
      Given the investment made for this new movement I think a Pelagos 39 GMT is pretty much a guarantee (well as much as anything Tudor of Rolex can be guaranteed lol) hopefully lots of interesting watches will be forthcoming given the competition😁

  • @Oxissistic
    @Oxissistic 3 дні тому

    I think there's a counter point to be made, I don't like the mix and match of gilt in the BB54, I prefer to be either full gilt like the GMT, or no gilt like the Monochrome.
    I have a 925 which has no gilt and will be getting the GMT as my next watch. I do not have a GMT but wanted to stick with Tudor so it all fits together to my taste.
    the other thing is I have tried the GMT on a few times now in different locations and the yellow/orange is a camera thing. the reality is much closer to a darker brass almost bronze look.
    thanks for your video. I enjoyed your take on it.

    Well, the issue I have with some of the "new vintage" looking watches is trying to capture the correct aged vintage coloring used on the indices and trimming on the dial. I assume that it must be super difficult to find the exact color because of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that jazz. Sometimes it's too yellow or orange or mustard. IMO the BB58 39mm ref # 79030N hit the bullseye on vintage execution and is one of my favorites.

I like vintage style but I like modern too. Everything doesn’t always need to be vintage. Saying that my next purchase is likely to be a BB 54. Yeah not all watches need heavy vintage design cues and hopefully the BB58 GMT in real life didnt go overboard! If only the No Time To Die SMP300 found that same balance, the fauxtina is far to dark for such an otherwise modern watch.

    They got all the way to THE watch everyone was asking for and then screwed up the end game.
    The bezel red should have been like the Diet Pepsi, the text should have been white on the bezel, and the markers and dial text should have been white.
    So close but, based on pics and trying on the Diet Pepsi, I think I’d pick the Diet Pepsi over this BB58 GMT and live with the thickness.

    Pelegos 39 GMT is what we want. Just in black and white or blue. Simple.
    Tudor always seems to miss the mark of what the majority want. If this was the same colour as the larger one, with a jubilee strap option, nobody would be complaining. Same as the BB58 should always have been monochrome as an option.
    Its funny cause San Martin makes homages of exactly what everyone wants, blue BB54, matt coloured Pelegos 39s, and this in the colour it should be......

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah given the money spent on creating this new movement, I'm sure that a Pelagos 39 will be coming at some point. a BB58 monochrome would be a fantastic watch for sure! Lol yeah San Martin keeps giving people what they want and the quality is pretty next level. the SN007 62MAS homage is one of my favorite watches

    Now that blue smiling BB looked really good on leather. If I didnt already know how thick it is😢

    Too much trying to convince us it’s something it’s not. It is not the Master II coke we expected. And, it is not a vintage watch.
    That said, I really like the 41 Monochrome which is not a No Date Sub. Perhaps it is that Tutor made Mil Subs, so it might feel more legit? Dunno. The heart wants what it wants.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Місяць тому

      Yeah hopefully it manages to hit the right balance in real life! But yeah they did well with the Monochrome and I'm really wanting one especially on the jubilee to change things up. I get what youre saying, it feels more like its own thing and the fully crisp white indices and silver bezel numerals makes it feel like its a watch from the present day. Nothing overtly vintage about it

    i agree with you regarding tudor's over use of guild and making all their watches "vintage". I disagree with you saying if the tudor gmt didn't have the guild accents then it would look to much like a rolex. a future rolex coke will have a ceramic bezel which would be drastically different than an aluminum insert.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Місяць тому

      I dont think that a BB58 GMT with the gilt would look much like the Rolex GMT master ii either! I actually prefer aluminum bezels since they are matte most of the time.
      My mention of Rolex and there not being a version without the gilt was more referring to the fact that Rolex and Tudor very rarely make watches that could be seen as similar. There's always at least one point of differentiation like size, material, or color

      That is not true. They get some traction due to Rolex sure. I am sure many buy them because they are good not because of Rolex association alone. 4-5k is not impulse buy for most, Rolex non availability is a big problem. Rolex are over priced in my opinion and long wait is even not worth it at all.

    • @H_tudor
      @H_tudor 21 день тому

      I mean Tudor isn’t a homage brand it’s more of an heritage brand , they rely on old designs for theirs and then touch them up for the future. Hans wilsdorf created the brand Tudor for everyone to be able to own Rolex quality but in different price classes where as Rolexes for the most part had their own movements Tudor used bought movements which made them more achievable and cheaper for the normal guy
