      what gsync compatible means, is they can take the best of the best of free sync monitors, slap a gsync compatible label on it, and get some extra cash from monitor makers to get a gsync compatible label put on their monitors. in other words, nvidia is doing another power grab and forcing their will on monitor makers.
      top of the line freesync monitors are already within the extreme margins of gsync. yet...i kinda doubt reviewers will call them out on their bs. some of the issues of freesync monitor are low hz range monitors which are cheap crap. so...in top of the line freesync monitors, there is no issues, hence why nvidia wants to put a gsync label on it, so they can do yet another power grab and claim their "tech and standards are better than amd" which simply isn't the case. the top of the line freesync monitors already are quality controlled by the manufacturers themselves. simply put, ngreedia, wants to try to take even freesync from amd and they are going to get away with it cause no one is going to call them out for it.

      Do you know if this would apply to older monitors? For example, my MG279Q (one of the first Freesync monitors) had an initial FS range of 35-90Hz. I changed it to 57-144Hz, but it clearly struggles and flickers between or at at precisely 56-59 FPS. If I could change the range to 70-144Hz for example and retain LFC, that sounds awesome.

      well ill just tell you that the monitor that he said was "ok" for him is a freesync 2 monitor. i have it. its a samsung chg70 most likely. i think the problem with it though is that overdrive only works from 120-144hz. if you stay in that range then it will look great most likely. lower fps is probalby where the problem is. of course samsung made monitors in 1080p and some that are less expensive int he same style as this one and maybe thats what they are. but they are all 144hz monitors. and im pretty sure thats my cgh70 with freesync 2 right there. but again if you can keep the fps above 120 you should be good. im sure a lot of monitors will have the same situation where with some settings or some ranges it will work fine.

    LFC on FreeSync used to require 2.5x between min and max, but that got relaxed down to 2x + 1 on a lot of panels. I'm not sure if AMD do per-panel validation before enabling LFC on monitors over 2x but under 2.5x, but would be a great question to ask them.
    I think NVIDIA (and AMD) want that extra buffer because jumping from min / max Hz could put a lot of strain on the scaler and cuz edge-case flickering.

      gsync actually covers the complete range up to 144hz or 240hz now. Compared to amds much smaller freesync range. Idk why some of these other replies have beaten around the bush (no offense to anyone) but essentially: G-sync compatible monitors are monitors that have adaptive sync technology (which is the same thing as g-sync in theory) except it is not made by nvidia. It does not have nvidia's gsync module inside the monitor like Edsknife said. Adapative sync monitors are generally cheaper than Gsync monitors, and imo they're extremely worth it if you have an Nvidia gpu and the monitor is g-sync compatible. This basically just means that your monitor does not have Nvidia's special hardware for their "gsync" but they've released software that allows adapative sync monitors to use their "gsync technology" with a compatible nvidia gpu. Gsync monitors came out and only worked with Nvidia cards; then Nvidia made an assload of money because the technology was exclusive and they claimed "This is groundbreaking technology, you can't just flip a switch and make it work" but then they made it available to way more people by adding cross-compatibility with adaptive sync monitors.
      tl;dr: it basically doesn't matter, G-sync compatible monitors are probably going to be cheaper than a "g-sync monitor" and it does basically the same thing.

See tftcentral's LG 950F/950G reviews for info on this (same panel, one with gsync and one with freesync). My guess is that the "Gsync Compatible" displays without the actual hardware on them will have input lag more similar to freesync displays, which is to say worse.
    Say what you will about the gsync pricing strategy, but there are valid reasons why Nvidia opted to use a hardware solution.

Could you go from 240hz to 60hz for the resolution upgrade if both had gsync? Thanks cause I was about to sell the 4k monitor for $200 not sure if I should now

      I personally prefer a higher resolution over higher frames in most of my games. I have a 4k screen and absolutely cannot go back to 1080 no matter the frame rate, it's just too jarring after using a higher resolution. I've regretted my upgrade to 4k60 ever since testing 1440/144, that seems to be the sweet spot as the difference between 1440 and 4k is practically unnoticeable in the games I play (arena shooters, FPS and city builders (the last one may be the exception)

      @@corenne i am going to hook up my 4k and see if gsync works on it now.. if so at the very least I could sell it much easier.. cause I would like to sell both of mine and get 1440/144 as well.. perfect balance.. i paid a premium just to get gsync and honestly i cant tell a difference lol

      deez nuts gsync is not better. You can find high end freesync monitors that is just as good as any gsync monitor. But when you pay for a cheap freesync monitor of course it's not going to be so good as an overpriced gsync one.
      Long story short. Gsync is overpriced, consumers hate it, manufacturers hate it, the nvidia tax ruins the value. Freesync gives consumers more choice for cheaper monitors. gsync is dead but nvidia will push hard to suck money out of brands with the "Gsync compatible" bullshit on freesync monitors.
      Also try and come with proof that gsync is better other than nvidia's lies, because it doesnt exist

    • @wile123456
      @wile123456 5 років тому

      @Spliffer45 ha name one gsync monitor that doesn't have a freesync monitor with just as good adaptive sync. Adaptive sync is simple to do, the shitty module is just horrible tax, come with some argument because "display scaling"isn't even used when you run a monitor at native refresh rate
      Ghosting, overdrive and other things are down to the panel and monitor, not the sync technology.

    • @wile123456
      @wile123456 5 років тому

      @Spliffer45 and why foes that fpga have to be locked down? Let manufacturers use the monitor they want and run the adaptive sync over the display port/newer HDMI. The gsync FPGA is probably good but there is nothing stopping manufacturers getting a just ad good FPGA but much cheaper because it doesnt have the nvidia tax. And again for the actual technology, its the same. Countless test have been done on monitors that have similar panels and so on. Same input latency, same amount if ghosting and same performsnce overall. Gsync is overpriced plain and simple

    1080p 144hz freesync + RX 580 here. As my first build moving over from console gaming the difference is awesome. It really did improve my gameplay in shooters, which most likely is due to the combination of mouse over gamepad and higher refresh rates, but still. My girlfriend can't play LOL on her 60hz laptop any more without it feeling laggy now either. Yay for high refresh rates and adaptive sync!

They should update again and all all the monitors that people report working perfect, like myself, as G-Sync Compatible". My VRR is 40 - 144Hz. Nvidia's adaptive sync support needs to be investigated. The demo showed here was also covered by PCGamer. The commenters figured out that Nvidia used LG monitors as examples of unworking (blinking, flashing) except that no one with AMD cards have those issues. They then found that those symptoms will happen if you try to force the monitor into an adaptive sync range it doesn't support. What that means is that Nvidia is not following the adaptive sync specification. If they were they would read the monitor's EDID for the adaptive sync range and then act accordingly. Nvidia is basically trying to shoehorn their proprietary GSync approach into the adaptive sync standard and then claim compatible. It's Gsync that isn't doing what it should not that the monitors are an issue.

I also capped my refresh rate at 100hz in windows/nvidia control panel, since most of my games don't realistically play at a constant 144fps.

    This might sound like a pretty silly question so apologies in advance - Is this whole concept the same as saying Nvidia have developed software to enable their GPUs to work with AMD FreeSync now, and instead of calling it that, they're calling it as AMD FreeSync monitors being G-Sync compatible ?
    I hope I"m making sense. Is another way to look at it just to say that AMD FreeSync being open technology, has enabled Nvidia to make their GPUs compatible with FreeSync ?

    The big question is why do so many monitors have problems? I mean this is a VESA standard so if it does not work either Nvidia or the monitor vendor has violated the spec.
    If Nvidia has violated the spec why even bother all this testing instead of just fixing it (at least for new products)
    If so many monitor vendors have violated the spec then shame on them because they are charging extra money for advertising their monitor as compatible.
    Or are all the monitors that partially work not even officially suppirting adaptive sync but somehow still work to some extend?

So at least for me... what monitor is cool enough for people that fell and hit their heads, is not really relevant . Wont even talk about prices on the high end GPUs , you dont even have a die shrink, just strapped on new shinny memory from third party , oh and the RTX that somewhat simulates natural light, maybe a good enough emulation , but not worth the prince on same process GPU.

  • @Cosmitzian
    @Cosmitzian 5 років тому

    Ok, that didn't clarify enough. Here's more. All FreeSync2 monitors should pass Gsync Compatibility. All older FreeSync monitors can be used, main issue is VRR but there can be.. quibbles. Once you test a monitor, you can submit feedback to Nvidia apparently on the brand and issues. All monitors that get over 300 positive reviews get moved to the Gsync Compatible branch. It's crowdsourced and realistically, unless i guess it's a shit display with shit VRR and quality, which means it was a scam to begin with, it will probably end up on that list eventually. Not that it matters much.
    One thing not really adressed is that the current feature is ONLY active on Pascal/Turing. That means no 980's or even any older, down to 7xx. That's a huge chunk of cards which realistically aren't that different. This is almost certainly an Nvidia strongarm move to make people that are still on those platforms to upgrade to currently produced models. I am almost certain that someone will hack the drivers to allow compatibility with Maxwell within the first month. Nvidia will freak and we'll probably at least get Maxwell compatibility within six months.
    Gsync monitors will still be produced, and Gsync still offers a better solution than any other Async, however the price point will continue to be a problem. There's a lot of other technologies in play here ULMB and HDR and various ways in which that interacts or doesn't interact with your Async solution.
