My grandma taught me a trick with the peanut butter 50 years ago. She would spoon a few smaller jars into a pot and melt it, then stir in a bunch of bird seed and sunflower seeds then pour all of that into a old coffee can that was split open in halves and little wooden rails that covered the sharp edges for the birds to perch. She left it out in winter for the "critters" as she called them. It was a big hit of course.

I do similar. I make a mix of songbird feed with unsweetened peanut butter and shovel it into two small cat food tins stacked one over the other. beneath is an old aluminum gutter nail tapped into the trunk to serve as a perch... this gives the birds a better chance before they are cleaned out by the squirrels and such. Important note is it is best to use unsweetened peanut butter because many brands use synthetic sugars that can make many critters quite ill.

That's a cool idea, but here in SW IN., i'd put it up and probably mostly get starlings and raccoons descend upon it once they noticed it and it would be dismantled in a couple days. A few other little birds might get a chance to get some but the starlings and possibly grackles would bully everyone else. Id have to put a limiter cage thing around it to just let the smaller birds access or raccoons could reach through and grab some. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that is often used in foods to keep the product sugar-free.
I usually just have the small PB jars as it gets too old and taste turns off, and i just scoop it out and slather it on tree bark all around, at about two feet up or six ft. up so different animals can get some.
Thanks for sharing and for watching! We're glad you enjoyed the video!
I'm just wondering if you replaced or at least removed the jar?
Thanks for your concern! We removed the jar as we removed the camera! Thanks for watching!
How clever of you. I was wondering how you were able to get that huge jar of peanut butter 🥜 on that tree 🌳. 😮

I guess I've been doing it all wrong! I toast some bread, and put a teeny smidge of butter, then put a teaspoon of peanut butter and cut in half. Take it out to my Ash tree where 2 squirrels are chasing each other up and down. 4 - 4:30pm usually is best. Sit inside and watch! 🥜🍞🐿🐾🐾🐾🐾
Wow thanks for sharing! That sounds like a great idea! We’re sure it’s a blast to watch them chase after eachother! Thanks for watching! If you haven’t already, don’t forget to subscribe to see more videos like this on the future!
Omg was that a flying squirrel?
It sure was!
Lasted a month. That’s pretty good!
that must be the thickest peanut butter as it never oozed out of the jar. the chipmunks must have thought it was neat eating it in the rain while staying dry lol
chipmunks or squirrels??
Cold temperatures where we are located and when this was filmed helped keep the peanut butter firm! We are located in northern Minnesota and this was filmed in March/April 2024 when it was still quite cold outside! Wasn't that an awesome clip of the squirrel hiding out from the rain and filling up its belly! Thanks for watching!
ah ok nuttun added to it
you got a lot of wild animals out there.
It seems that is the case! Thanks for watching!
Don't know if you want them to slip on plastic, but a number of windings of a old rope or twine would give them grip.
