+John Bess I leatnd a lot form other knife makers and blacksmiths. I would find a blacksmithing group that is near where you live and attend a meet where they are demonstrating. I have always found poeple who are wanting to share there knowledge. My blacksmithing skils or ok at best. I still go meets and try to pick others brains, and share what I know.
+Shukin Andjvin I am not sure of the grit of the natural hone. I do not really like guessing the numbers of natural hones. The stone does improve a 12k edge and makes for a nice shave. I understand your tool dilemma, there are lots of things I would like to make, but the tools to make them cost more than what I want.
+lewisrazors big fan of you mr lewis, i like all your videos keep up the good work, and maybe i can buy one of this razors, i would love to add it to my colection. p.s. a big fan from europe - romania :D
Wonderful video, Charlie! I first learned of you from your interview on the Moustache and Blade podcast, and then quite by accident stumbled on this a few days later. I was only going to watch part of it, but then couldn't turn it off. It's truly amazing to watch such a skilled craftsman do his work, and even better, to explain it step by step. And then seeing you actually shave with it was the frosting on the cake. Your razors are absolutely beautiful and truly unique. Thank you for sharing how you make them.
Paul Kuehn I really enjoyed soing the Moustache and Blade podcast. I am glad you found the video informative and enjoyable. Thank you for your kind words and comments. Happy shaving.
lewisrazors I will get to work making little happy razors :) I was also a Bob Ross fan. Thanks for your comment it made me laugh. Now I need to get rid my baldness grow my afro like you and Bob.
you know, it's funny you mention bob ross because while i was watching this, i was reminded of him. watching this video was almost as relaxing as watching bob ross paint.
Shayde Mohr I am glad that there was some helpful tips in the video. I would like to see the blades you come up with, making blades is a great hobby. Sometimes I like to shave with thinner blades also. I like to swtich it up, big Sheffield wedges, full hollow 5/8s, I like to use a variety of blades while shaving. Razors are like pringles you can not have just one.
+SomeDudeYouKnow1996 Thanks for the input on the video. Working with metal is a great hobby. It took me a long time to gather my tools for my shop. I started off with not much in the way of tools.
MegaHayran there should be a reason why every barber shop will NEVER use a 15 dollars gillette... Mate, you really should think before writing such things :D
i am not suggesting that barber shops use or should 15 dollar gillettes. i'm just comparing the performance and overall the experience i would gained of the handmade razor if i used one with a gillette; based on my past experiences, my own thoughts and the impression i gained of the razor on the video. There is no reason for all you people to get such mad at me. You can side with the video owner that's fine; but non of you people who respond ask yourselves "how you good would you be if you were using this razor instead of one that you bought at the mall."
+david graham Thank you for your feedback on the video. It is good to hear you find it interesting and engaging. That is a good idea for texturing. Making random patterns is a hard thing for me. I want to line everything up in rows. Slow and careful is way to hone. It is one of those things where technique matters. You would not cut yourself, it is human nature to stop cutting when you cut your self. I have had nicks with a striaght razor but never had a serious cut from shaving. I have cut my self while making razor though. Spinning wheels and razor require all my attention.
I have never made a straight razor by way of forging, you do a very excellent job of explaining every step of the process, most I have done was making a knife for my brother through grinding it was made from a file, I ground it while it was still hard and tempered it on the kitchen stove burner, watched the color run then quenched it in 30-W motor oil, it was razor sharp, he took it up to a friend who also made knifes and was showing it to him, there was another friend who had his 16 year old son along he did not believe it was razor sharp, and actually put pressure on it with his thumb, it cut him to the bone, left a impression on him his dad said "maybe you will listen to your elders when they say be careful it is sharp"
Anuel Jackson I made a few razors from files, where is ground out the razor. I forge some and also do stock removal, I change it up. I have also been young and strupid and not payed attention about sharp blades, Thanks for commenting.
yes I to was, but it took just once being cut by my dad's pocket knife, it was surprising but it did not scare me, in fact I asked my dad to show me how he had got his knife so sharp, and he showed me how to sharpen my own knife a boy scout pattern bought at a local farm store, it was not a quality steel blade but he taught me to tell by the feel of the blade being dragged over the stone on the quality of the steel, I later up graded my knife to a Swiss Army style, it had better quality steel that would hold an edge, my hunting knifes are all Buck's and they are easy to sharpen and hold an edge well. I randomly found this video on youtube and opened it out of pure curiosity. Then I saw that the video was 1 hour long and thought that I'd just skip through a little... I ended up watching the whole video in one go. Your narrating, your editing with the different viewing angles, the craftsmanship, it was all almost perfect. Your way of making videos is very captivating (and also very relaxing). Thank you for this very nice video and keep them coming :)
ardotschgi1 I really appreciate your feedback and comments. My first videos were very cringe worthy. I have worked and studied trying to improve my video production skills. Comments like yours make it all worth while. Thank you.

+Patrick Boyle Thank you for your feedback. I learned all of my video skills from watching others videos on UA-cam. There are already a lot of great how to videos on making videos. But now you have me thinking, thanks.
lewisrazors Nice blade- any advice on building a small DIY lapidary grinder with a similar modular build? Besides the obvious waterproof issues? Thanks, great videos
+raulpisti raul DE razors tend to be the cheapest shaving method over time. Although finding a reliable handle can be difficult or pricey, the blades themselves cost less than 50 cents each. After all shaving with DE razors works great for men who are prone to ingrown hairs, since the single blade does not cut as closely to the skin because DE razors stay extremely sharp for optimal shaving for longer periods of time.
Un gran trabajo. El arte manual es incomparable. Nunca debe pasar de moda. Eso no puede desaparecer. La satisfacción del trabajo realizado no se compara con nada. Felicitaciones...
That was an Awesome video my friend. I had no idea what was involved in making such a tool. Excellent camera work, voice over and of course the "Shave".
1 hour video and at no point did I get bored. Thanks for taking the time to record, edit and upload this. Not to mention the great craftsmanship that went into the razor
I never cut myself with a Razor only on the disposable shavers and they gave me Rashes. My Antique Razor was stolen in a Burglary, As you can see I gave up Shaving. Well Done Sir! your a true Artist.
+Stephen Williams I share the same experience with getting nicks as you, thank you for the kind words. That is a rocking beard, having a beard like that is on my list.
Fascinating! I trained as a silvesmith, and found a lot of similarities in the fabrication methods. Such a beautiful razor too. Thank you for taking the time to make this.
Mr Berryman You are very welcome. Silversmithing is an art that I find fascinating. I do have a bit of hammer addiction, Silversmith's have lots of hammers.
Best darn hour I've yet spent on UA-cam! I never tire of watching an artist make his work seem so effortless and yet know so few of us could emulate! Mr Lewis you certainly put life and soul into your creations, and wish all success in your endeavours. Pure magic!
I accidentally watched like 45 mins of this earlier and was just able to finish it now. I really want to try this, but I also really want to work with / try to make damascus steel D:
Levistator Making damascus is addictive, I wish I were set up to make it. I end up buying most of mine. The people I know who make damascus are obsessed with it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

So.. i was about to watch some random gameplay about War of the Roses after watching Vikings... Then i saw this video on suggest videos and clicked on it. Now 1 hour is passed i'am calm as fu#k and this shaving part made me like a butter on top of the pancake tower, why? Because shaving is so relaxing and kinda awesome thing to do sometimes. Oh and i watched some blacksmith videos before this as well and they were so cool that id like to be a blacksmith now. Best 1 hour in long time. Thanks Mr.Lewis!
***** You are very welcome, I appreciate your feedback on the video. Thank you for watching and commenting. Best of luck with your gaming and blacksmithing.

It's perfect, it's gorgeous, it looks very beautiful, the knife's mouth is shining, it's shining. Mükemmel muhtesem çok güzel görünüyor bicak agzi ışıl ışıl olmuş parlıyor eline sağlık üstadım
Sir, I would appreciate if you let me know how many whetstones you use and how many degrees you can sharpen the knife. Thank you from now. Hocam kaç giritlik biley taşı kullanıyorsunuz ve bıçağı kaç derecede bileyleyebiliyorsunuz bilgilendirirseniz sevinirim. Şimdiden teşekkür ederim.
mashallah it looks amazing it looks perfect it's very beautiful the mouth is shining bright my master thank you for your effort my master congratulations 👏👏👏 maşallah harika görünüyor mükemmel görünüyor çok güzel ağız parlıyor ustam emeğiniz için teşekkür ederim hocam tebrikler 👏👏👏
dude that just awesome , i admire your stile of work , i be bless if you told me , the number of tools you use, and more less on the cheap way , how much will it cost me
juan diego All of the tools I used are in the video. Most of my tools are home made or used, that is the least expensive way I could get them. You can do heat treat in forge, you do not have to have the eletriic kiln. Check out Wayne Goddards books he has some great ideas for just starting out.
Wow...you are certainly a master craftsman! I cant even sharpen my razor much less make one. I bet it took years to develop all those skills! I only dream of being able to do that. Bravo!
Been using a Lewis razor since around 2011-2012. Just found this video. The craftsmanship is phenomenal. I've had and have other razors made by large manufacturers that I also will use, mainly out of town. My Lewis is my everyday razor though, it just feels right in my hand. I don't even know if you can still buy these but if you can, it's worth the money.
THIS IS by far thee best video I have ever sat thru because it was very interesting. When I was younger my mom gave me an electric shaver to shave with in the beginning, she didn't want me to cut myself at all.. When I found out that with a blade I could get super slick & girl loved that more than a little stubble, I have saved with a blade ever since, In the military you had to shave with a blade because there wasn't any electric in the jungles in Vietnam. I started shaving with a str8 razor about 12 years ago & there is nothing at all like it now, Thank you for explaining everything as you went along with your very informative video, I a going to try my hand at making one for myself as I am a certified Journeyman Machinist & Tool Maker too boot. Thank You sir for a very nice & well thought out video...
ok so I haven't found a straight razor for over 1,500.00, I can understand that, even though in my opinion it's worth at least 2,500.00 you probably couldn't sell it for more that 1,000.00, most good razors go for around 500.00 so I was way off...at any rate it was an awesome video and enjoyed every minute of it.
Oh crap. Great job on the razor. I have made simple knifes from a simple brick forge. But it barely gets hot enough. I could never make a knife. Or razor. As beautiful as that.
I came here just to see how you sharpen your razor and ended up watching your entire video. Really liked it. Why do you emerge the razor in the oil after putting it in the oven? Thx for posting it!
Hi there, I just wanted to say what a throughly fantastic video. The production quality of everything is top notch - from blade, to camera angles, to editing. I've learned a lot from your video. Thank you.
Max Troy Thank you very much, I appreciate the feedback on the video. I have worked hard trying to make better videos. I shudder when I look at my first videos.
Nice razor seen many being made My Dad barberd for 50 yrs out of WW2 Taught too ,I've got his stones yet his last hone is a satin mineral out of Switzerland when he's done he said hone till you don't hear the edge ,Strop it best shave ever ,After you shave use hot towel to swell your pores, 😁
A well made straight razor can be passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, my scales (what makes the folding handle) broke off of the one I use. I've been contemplating making new scales out of oak.
Fantastic walk-through and a really beautiful work of craftsmanship! This razor in the vid looks a bit big and chunky then most stock razors, maybe a bit more "manly" feel to it when you hold it in your hand? :D How much do you sell them for? (I am just assuming you do sell your work, cause if you don't, you really should!)
Brian Emilius Thanks for the kind comments. Yes the razor is big compared to most factory made razors. The prices vary I sell my work through Straight Razor Designs.
theres something relaxing about watching someone forge a piece of metal into shape
I enjoyed that. I can't believe I watched for an hour and my interest was held the entire time, unlike most movies or TV shows!
Christopher Tacitus Thanks for watching and commenting. I know what you mean, I was kind of surprised my self when it ended up being this long.
I can't agree more Christopher!

I just watched a man make a razor out of a piece of metal then shave with it, how much more manly can it get? I need a cigarette.
Hmmmm,
I agree with everything but the cigarette part...in a non-kinky way!
you know you're a manly man when you make your own tools and you make...excuse me..FORGE your own razor and then shave yourself with it.
kudos.
You are very nice, thank you for the comments.
no problem. :)

working with metal is totally awesome and i agree with you bot on a subject like shaving any handmade razor just cant beat a 15 dollar gillette.
MegaHayran you can keep your fifteen dollar gillette
MegaHayran You've clearly never used a straight razor (or at least never used one properly).
MegaHayran
there should be a reason why every barber shop will NEVER use a 15 dollars gillette... Mate, you really should think before writing such things :D

i would love to have such an razor!

Макс Чесначорр That is a good idea, I have one time lapse, I should think about doing some more. Thanks
Thanks for showing us......It's amazing how you do it....
Hannes Willems You are welcome.
dude that just awesome , i admire your stile of work , i be bless if you told me , the number of tools you use, and more less on the cheap way , how much will it cost me
juan diego All of the tools I used are in the video. Most of my tools are home made or used, that is the least expensive way I could get them. You can do heat treat in forge, you do not have to have the eletriic kiln. Check out Wayne Goddards books he has some great ideas for just starting out.
Tanks dude, its realy helpfull
Holy shit that was satisfying!
I am glad you enjoyed it
Ron Verburg You are very welcome.
Wow...you are certainly a master craftsman! I cant even sharpen my razor much less make one. I bet it took years to develop all those skills! I only dream of being able to do that. Bravo!
I really enjoyed watching you make this from scratch, true master at work.
streetryderz209 Thank you for the kind words.
Rock on brother! Thank you for passing on the knowledge. Very cool.
+lewisrazors what do you use for a drill bit lubricant?
"none of yer beeswaz". :)
+Full Sun Ha :)
+Rick Price You are very welcome, thank you for the kind words
ok so I haven't found a straight razor for over 1,500.00, I can understand that, even though in my opinion it's worth at least 2,500.00 you probably couldn't sell it for more that 1,000.00, most good razors go for around 500.00 so I was way off...at any rate it was an awesome video and enjoyed every minute of it.
You Da man Lewis, nice detailed video from start to finish. Two thumbs up to you bro!!!!!
Next time will make my own razor then only shave thanx
Happy shaving.
Wait, what? Where's the sound of razor cutting the hair? It's sounds so quiet. Never have been saw such a great honed and stropped razor.
Hi there,
I just wanted to say what a throughly fantastic video. The production quality of everything is top notch - from blade, to camera angles, to editing.
I've learned a lot from your video.
Thank you.
Max Troy Thank you very much, I appreciate the feedback on the video. I have worked hard trying to make better videos. I shudder when I look at my first videos.
Man, Far out!!! thats a nice peace of tool you made there, nice to watch you making it, thanks for sharing.
I have no idea how I got here or why I watched it for an hour. But hell, nice job. That's a lot more work than I would have imagined it would be.
good shave tutorial too
+Super Kitten Thanks for the comment

Thank you for sharing your memories. You Dad was a smart man, all of that is great advice.
That’s a hell of a job , and very relaxing to see you making it ,I don’t shave but that will make any man doing so .

+Guillermo Rossi You are very welcome, thanks for commenting.
I just wanted to thank you for sharing many good details. The video was awesome and very interesting. Have a good one!
Wow. That was VERY cool. Thank you for putting this up. Bees wax for drill lube, that was pretty cool and windex on the stone. Neat.
+Ray Burton Thanks for kind words, I am glad you enjoyed the video.
Really great work and informative video! Respect!! Thanks!!
You are very welcome
well done man great video keep them coming!
lazzyuser I need to get off of my butt and make more videos. Thanks for the encouragement.
Great video. So talented. Ever think about shipping. Would love to buy one.
A well made straight razor can be passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, my scales (what makes the folding handle) broke off of the one I use. I've been contemplating making new scales out of oak.
Yukari Yakumo I have some razors with oak scales. I have several videos on scale making that might be helpful to you.
lewisrazors Thanks ;-3
Excellent video, thanks for sharing, really want to try make one now! :)
nice work, beautiful razor
rev myk Thank you very much.
Fantastic walk-through and a really beautiful work of craftsmanship!
This razor in the vid looks a bit big and chunky then most stock razors, maybe a bit more "manly" feel to it when you hold it in your hand? :D
How much do you sell them for? (I am just assuming you do sell your work, cause if you don't, you really should!)
Brian Emilius Thanks for the kind comments. Yes the razor is big compared to most factory made razors. The prices vary I sell my work through Straight Razor Designs.
Very interesting. Can you please remain me the name of the file you used to make the "grip" on the handle ? (excuse my bad english)
It was a checkering file, you can find them at jewelry supply and gunsmith supply stores.
