So after watching this I've come up with what I feel is a great procedure for soft top replacement. *Step 1:* Remove old soft top *Step 2:* Fit hard top. 🤣
The black art of soft-top replacement. Sends shivers down my spine just thinking about it! It is something I have been meaning to do for my '89 NA but every time I contemplate it I break out in a cold sweat.😧 Well done in achieving Zen level in fitment. Be sure to protect the new hood regularly with 303 Fabric Guard, and you'll have years of life out of it.
People looking for a how-to should look at other videos. This is a musical montage of disconnected steps where important details are hidden from the view of the camera or omitted entirely. It's basically a music video.
Nice job. I remember doing the same job on my wife’s mk2. I recall having to impact adhesive the front section where it wraps over the rail, hate those one-go jobs 🙀
I had to replace the "rain rail" (plastic channel under rear window) on one of these before. It took me forever to torque it down correctly where it doesn't leak. I'd tighten one side only for the other to spring a leak. Definitely the most annoying repair I've done on a car.
Next year I'm planning to buy an ND, either new or an ND1 without the iActivsense crap, and I'm planning to buy a replacement soft top, drivers seat, and possibly steering wheel and shift knob just so that I have factory replacements when those things finally wear out.
Me too! Don't think it's Moog. Same electronic-ey stuff but a completely different vibe from Moog's stuff. WAY different vibe from what I usually like (HARD loud screaming guitars) but I like it! It grooves.
@@ThatGuy_21 MCM gave birth to Benny and Turbo Yoda! Love to see Benny and crew supporting other Aussies in Amerka at Drag Week 2019 too! Great to see their "team" compete. All for one!
Having done this on my own NB, this look heaps easier to do without a roll bar blocking the way! That said, it's seriously not fun regardless and next time it needs doing, I'm paying someone else to do it for sure! 🤣
fuuuuck I paid someone else to do it last time and it was kinda pricey. The top is already getting old so I was thinking about doing it myself this time.
Good to see, but I'd still farm out that job. I'm too old for that sh*t ;). Left my soft top down in the garage when it was 5 deg. C. Couldn't latch it until spring.
Can someone help me understand how to actually get the soft top back onto the Miata? I took mine off no problem and can’t get it to fit back into place
I’m neither really. Can play most sports either way but golf / baseball/ cricket right handed, left footed in soccer and throw left handed. I used to love flipping between rh/ lh in baseball and cricket.
@@BennysCustomWorks no way, that’s really cool... I only noticed because it’s rare for you to use a power tool (very old school) so when the driver came out it made me focus more, that’s when I noticed. Keep up the good work Benny

Nice video, i also enjoy the 80-s theme music.
Yeah, cool synths!
I've done two of these, and getting those nuts back on at the very back...challenging with new rain rail.

Wow I did the same job on a 1993 Miata 25 years ago and I don’t remember it was so hard but I would not do it again, nice job!.
Thanks for being willing to step outside your comfort zone. Good video, too!

thanks bud u saved me 10 mins
What a brave mission! Very well done
Thank you for posting this video. It will be helpful when I’m putting the top back together.
3:14 Snap-On brand shoes!? I didn't know you were ballin. Respect and love as always, cheers!
Wow...that was pretty much the most informative video. Thanks for that.

Great video mate, very helpful for the home mechanic/enthusiast!
Cheers for sharing...
You're so versatile Benny! Sign of a competent mechanic ;-)
As always Benny, soundtrack is on point mate. Keep up the good work

great work benny. you caught it just in time.
Who does all the music for your video's Benny? Love the tunes!
Loving the content too

Its Gian(probably spelt his name wrong)
nice quick video. was really satisfying to watch as well. never learn if you never leave your comfort zone and try new things :)
Open UA-cam. Uploaded 1 minute ago. No views. Total fluke, but I'll take it! 👌🏻
It HAS to be 0 views for half a second or so.... for a millisecond... :-p
Love seeing Aussie channels supporting other Aussie channels.
Good on you @Torq Hub Media. Hopefully hear that Falcon start up soon.

Good job Benny, looks nice and tight on there
Wat size drill bit did u use for removing the rivets
Great video Benny loved seeing that clean NB and you doing something different on it. Any more videos on this car planned?
Good to see you do something different
Great video
Think I would just have bought a raincoat, don't think my little brain could have done that
Nice little fix on those latches, Benny
Where would you recommend to buy the replacement skin?
Another excellent video Benny!
nice vid mate. I reckon that job would be a nightmare and I wouldn;t even try. Cool music too.
F' yeah. Great video and latch repair.
Great work, as usual.
Man this makes me miss my NB Mx5
yeah me too
What’s the tool called he use at 5:00 into the video
"we're all gonna learn together " haha
Good to see, but I'd still farm out that job. I'm too old for that sh*t ;). Left my soft top down in the garage when it was 5 deg. C. Couldn't latch it until spring.
Did you treat the surface rust on the rear parcel shelf?
where did u buy the top? what brand? thanks for making a great DIY miata top video!
You can buy just the latch caps! They’re quite cheap.
Hey mate!
Question, where did you get the gold socket for your impact driver?
I’m always looking for something to make life easier!
Thank
Finally a real car 😜
Looking to replace the wife’s mx-5 soft top, where did you find yours?
Can someone help me understand how to actually get the soft top back onto the Miata? I took mine off no problem and can’t get it to fit back into place
It was a while ago now but from memory I got it on the mounting studs first then did the rain rail / mounting points
I’m still scared to do mine but the upholstery shop wanted 2100 so ima take the risk of not doing a good job
I still have PTSD from doing mine with a mate. Jesus christ it's a shit job.
Even better when the rain rail disintegrates when you pull it out!
It's even better with a roll bar in the way!
Dude!.. are those snap-on shoes steel or composite toe? They are dope as hell.
In all the years I’ve never noticed you were left handed until all of those screws started going back in...

Bit out of the norm, but still a great video. Its not all about the boost.
an enjoyable video for a painful job
I reckon Bennie will overtake MCM
Just like the old days of MCM showing fans mods they can do at home. Good stuff!
Great video... Looked like a turd of a job mate.
Think detailed instructions on tools and sizes of spanners etc socket sets requiredcwouodve been more helpful than music and fast video.
It’s all pretty basic tools. It’s also not a simple task to attack
👍🏻🍺👏
Nice work, doing this job isn't THAT hard, it's just fiddly and time consuming.
Vlog style would’ve been nicer bro
I didn’t have 20 minutes to talk about stuff in no way relating to the title of the video sorry.
This looks horrible.
