737 MAX is not a short-range aircraft for a long long time. Even NG has been a medium range aircraft already. 6-abreast short range aircraft is actually a niche not occupied currently and medium and long range aircraft are used in this role inefficiently.

I think China Airlines will split the order of 20 aircrafts into two between Airbus and Boeing. The airline may place this order for 10 A350-1000 and 10 777X. If it does, I think it would be beneficial for this airline as it is familiar with both of the types.

Where would Boeing get the multi billions required to develop an entirely new plane? At the moment they are losing a LOT of money every month and coming up with a plane specifically to take on the A321 would take nearly a decade, by which time the market may be looking for something else.

The airbus facilities and aircraft are following in the design, composite materials used, technology that Boeing used in designing and fabricating their 787 aircraft which is Boeing's newest aircraft designed from the ground up. The 777 and 737 Max are redesigns of existing aircraft with new technology applied. Airbus does have relatively newer facilities but this is a copycat industry like many.
