No smoking was really amazing due to it's layered writing, a Lynchian sound design and I think was the first Surreal Neo-noir film made in India. It's one interpretation being that it's a personal story of Kashyap, one other interpretation is (kinda very clichè) that it's all a dream which tells us about K's severe anxiety of quitting the cigerette.

Aankhon Dekhi for me seemed like a perfect representation of existential crisis experienced by the geriatric population unable to be in tune with the rest of the world. The ending holds a lot of meaning for me as a mental health professional. Rajeev Babu’s family failed to notice how slowly he was growing distant so much so that he jumped of from the cliff considering what he had was enough and that he needed nothing more.

    1) Tumbaad: Greed is the theme. Simple theme but it is explained nicely by story. Visual effects are too good. What a story! 2) Kantara- Masterpiece. It asked many logical questions and all characters are necessary for the story to have good sense and the lead actor is just a ordinary character. The power of Demigod can make an person with all bad habit do some good thing for society. Also it made us to think who is the real owner of our land and money, it is user or the owner or Demigod or Government. Unbelievable story! Finally the songs are too good.

All the mentioned movies are amazing. Here are some facts about the movie that is close to my heart, "Tumbadd".
    1. Overall, Tumbad took 20 years to come to life, and in those years it went through many ups and downs, script rejections, people leaving the project, money issues, etc.
    2. Director/writer "Rahi anil barve" wrote 1st draft of tumbadd in 1997 when he was 18years old. It was originally a Marathi film at the time.
    3. He originally wrote Tumbadd as a trilogy, but in the span of 20 years it kept changing and developing.
    4. When the very first filming started, Nawazudin Siddique was playing Vinayak's role, but later that filming stopped because of some issues.
    5. During the script's development in 1997, the director was confused on what to name the village. He saw a Marathi novel on his desk called "Tumbadd che khot," so he kept "Tumbadd" as a placeholder name, thinking he'd change it later, but that never happened.
    6. In one shot of Tumbad, director Rahi Anil Barve and cinematographer Pankaj Kumar wanted original clouds and correct lighting, for which they waited for 3 days. Imagine the whole crew of 250 people waiting for a single shot. Imagine the fees for each person. Kudos to the producer, Soham Shah, who waited patiently and gave the director creative liberty. That was the level of dedication of the creators.
    7. For the amazing background scores, the creators chose an award-winning video game music composer, "Jesper Kyd." He has composed music for well-known games like Assassin's Creed, Hitman, Mortal Combat, etc.
    8. Hastar was created three times, twice in prosthetics and finally in CGI, with all scenes recreated every time it changed. Also, the godess's womb was created twice because they were not satisfied with the look. "Dadi's" character was also redone. Every recreation took years to complete because they had to shoot all of the respective sequences each time something was redone.
    9. The character of the old horiffic "Dadi" is played by the same boy who played the character of Vinayak's son. Mohammad Samad is the boy hidden beneath Dadi's prosthetic makeup.
    11. Soham Shah learned Marathi to match the dialogue accent of the movie.
    12. Tumbbad had a budget of 5 crores, but sadly, it only made 13.5 crores at the box office. I wanted Tumbaad to receive the recognition it deserves. Lucky for me, I was one of the people who experienced this masterpiece in theatres.

You have rightly mentioned the Kantara movie is a coming-of-age movie in one aspect. Lots of things are mentioned in Metaphors. The songs are also deep in the original version. Below is an effort to translate the Karma song of Kannada version in English.
Karmada Kallanu Edavida Manujanu Beralina Gaayavu Maayadu
The man who stumbled upon the stone of karma, his wound will not easily recover.
Hageyali kovige Tale kodo Marulara Gudiyali Daivavu Kaayadu
The fool who always keeps gun on his temple head in anger, for him GOD will never wait in the Temple.
Kattalanu Manisoke Hachitta Deepa Oorane suduvantha Jwale Aayithenoo??
The Lamp, which was ignited to illuminate darkness, may have turned into a hellfire which is burning the whole town.
Oh...Garbhadalle Aada Gaaya,Hanebaraha Badukidi Maddu Hudeki Aledaadue
Oh..the wound which occurred in the womb was fate (were not in your control). You will keep on searching for medicine your whole lifetime (if you try to control it).
Yara Jothe Yariyade Ninna Kalaka.Ninane Neenu Huduki Kaledoguve
Without pouring(sharing) your inner turmoil with anyone. You will end up lost searching yourself.
Nungikondaruu Maado Paapanella Gange,Bittu hoguthale Pasthapa Nange Ninge.
Even though Mother Ganga has borne (taken) all the sins done by you and me, she will flow, leaving us with only regrets.
Dharpadalle Merevaaga Totta Hoova Maale,Naalege Hoo Uduri Kunikyagudeno
The garland which you were wearing when you were roaming in arrogance, tomorrow all the petals from the same garland will fall and you will be left with only thread which may act as the noose and thereby end your life?

"No smoking" movie dekhne ke bad meri fan theory ye hai ki, paresh rawal ke character ko as a Modern Yamraj dikhaya hai jo modern day court room ki tarah kisi person pe case chalata hai aur ye Yamraj thoda different hai kyuki ye Hitler ka friend bhi reh chuka hai. Aur ye jo Yamraj hai vo sirf bad habbit wale insano ke bad spirit ko kaid kr pure spirit ko chhod deta hai. Aur jis tarah traditional Yamlok me logo ke bad sprits ko punishment milta tha thik vaise hi is movie me bhi hota hai.
"SORRY BRO I AM NOT SO GOOD ON STORY TELLING"
aur jo log ye bol rahe hai ki ye movie underrated hai to aisa ni h bas is movie ka ek unique audience hai, aur har kisi ke pas apni ek alag explanation hai is movie ka.👍

Tumbad is completely different, it's horrifying and dark on the other side Kanthara is about divine and belief and does not fit in that category. Both are extraordinary movies in their own way. Tumbad is not horror but horrifying, it's falls in different cadre. I like both movies in different perspectives.

I believe no smoking is about tussle between a human habit and human mind... the prayogshala is about diging deep into subconscious and unconscious mind where while mind wants you to stop the habit in any way before its too late , and habit being more connected with human pleasure and choice doesn't seems to settle with this.

Kantara has a simple story, a king donates his land to villagers, his descendants want the land back, they fight over it, we have 3 scenes which add the demigod concept to wrap around simple story, one is at start where the land is donated, one in middle where the land is asked back and one at end where in final climax where kings descendants and villagers fight it out...(the demigod doesn't add or remove anything to the story)
I liked the the depiction of rituals and culture but that was about it... pretty regular stuff

    • @vijayshreesondur5676
      @vijayshreesondur5676 Рік тому

      Kantara is far from "regular"
The movies' basic plot might be what you summed it up to be but what makes it so special is the acting, the dialogues, the essence and authenticity of the region (and the people) captured in every possible way. Be it the culture or the ritual or even the numerous shots of natural beauty that Tulunadu is known to be. Kantara might have begun as a very simple idea that striked the mind of a writer/directior but the endless efforts of the whole team has brought the movie such attention every uniquely imagining mind deserves.

No smoking has many layers.. everytime I see it I found an interesting thing in it.. this was way ahead of its time so flopped at box office.. one small observation: Abbas tyrewala is Anurag's friend (the character played by Ranvir Shorey).. at that time he was getting lots of recognition due to screenwriting ( Munnabhai MBBS, main hoon Na etc)... This success hurts him a lot so Anurag used his name as Abbas was okay with film certification board cutting the scenes from his films...

Tumbaad has layers that run deeper than the womb of the goddess...
    1. Hastar has gold and stays inside earth because gold lies deep in the earth. Grains and crops grow above earth. Hastar is forbidden to touch food because it can be shared and satisfy people's need. But gold creates something more than need... it creates greed. Remember, when Hastar was born he didn't go for the grain first. He could have but he first lept at the gold. This shows his inherent greedy nature.
    2. Risk is required along with insatiable greed. Sarkar (the old man who fathered Vinayak) wasn't courageous but his son boyish Vinayak and the grown up Vinayak also, asks monster Grandma about the treasure. She detects the inherent greediness yet risk taking nature within him and hence tells him her secret in return for her liberation from her course. She never tells about the treasure to her own son - Sarkar because Sarkar was timid and consumed all the gold she had earned, eventually left poor with one coin in the hand of Hastar statue.
    3. Indian independence is not merely a narrative device, which is a metaphor of young India (boy pandurang) achieving freedom from age old British greed (burning his father and thus breaking the ancestral curse of greediness that runs in Gradma, Vinayak and Pandurang).
    4. The Grandma tries to eat boy Vinayak because she cannot touch grain (the Hastar's curse spreads through his bite). She needs to be fed (like how Hastar needs dough dolls as offering ... Naivedya).
Hence when Vinayak is covered with flour in a kitchen mishap, she doesn't touch him but locks his ankle with her chain and drags him over to her room and fixes him to the bed to unscrew her mouth (which is shut so that she can not bite people) and was about to eat him without touching his flour covered body.
    Some more metaphors ---
    1. Dialogue in the film - "Sarkar poori zindagi dhundta raha par use kucch nahi mila"
    - Sarkar, the old man, tried searching all his life but couldn't find anything.
    Change the gender.
"Sarkar poori zindagi dhundti Rahi par use kucch nahi mila."
    - Government tried to search whole time but didn't find anything.
Tax evasion and black money - difficult to spot the greed of the rich people.
    2. Dialogue - "Baki Devon ne uspe waar karn shuru kiya ... Poorti ke Devi ne use apni kokh mein sama liya"
    - The gods started attacking Hastar and hence the goddess of fulfillment kept him in her womb.
Explains why Hastar has a wounded, blood red, unborn body. Also he is depicted as a malnourished skeletal demon because he is hungry since ages because he cannot eat grain. Remember Hastar's statues are like a baby, the actual demon in the womb has however a grown up yet sickly body.
    3. Hastar has gold in his loincloth esp. in his backside.
Generally Indians kept their money in the front of their loincloth, in old times. So why Hastar's is like that?
Because it's a analogy to an baby that eats and poops in the diper. The coins coming out of backside of Hastar's loincloth is literally he pooping the gold out while eating the dough dolls.
    4. Why Hastar multiplies?
When gods attacked Hastar he was split into particles. To save him the mother goddess took him back in his destroyed form (millions of particles) into her womb. So there are many elemental Hastars in the womb, each hungry of food. That's why they appear as per the proportion of the food offered. Greed is infinite. So is Hastar.

Good review. I am yet to watch Kantara so skipped that part to avoid any spoilers. Good to see No Smoking in that list. It's a very good movie. See how Anurag Kashyap gave reference to Russia at the start.
You can also include Tamasha in that list which is a very deep movie. Most People didn't understand its depth including lyrics of songs like Matargashti and Safarnaama.

Aankho Dekhi is the movie I give 10/10 on so many aspects; no movie is near this.
A very unique thing about Aankho Dekhi is - every character in this movie has a story and is well portrayed; every person is struggling in his own life with his own problem - Amma, Babuji, Rishi, Rita, Ajju, Shammi, everyone, even people not from this family. On the other hand, in every Bollywood (or Hollywood) movie, the storyline revolves around two main characters.
Tumbbad is fantastic, mindblown but still, that 10/10 is a big thing. I definitely keep Tumbbad as my second favorite. No doubt.

Here's my theory on NO SMOKING. K's habit of smoking portrays the nature of sin we humans are so vulnerable to. We know such and such thing is unethical, immoral and outright wrong. But we do that thing anyway. We just can't let go off the thrill of committing a sin. Paresh Rawal's character depicts Lucifer. As he said "yahan paataal ghar mein mere kaha puraan hai". The prayogshala itself depicts Hell. It's below the ground, dark and not at all a happy place. K's story depicts the insane journey a human being goes through his life trying to avoid committing sins, and failing miserably every single time. I could be wrong though 😀

    • @NarpaviCandela
      @NarpaviCandela Рік тому

Smoking is not a sin. Not a crime. The worry is because the impact created on health due to the presence of toxin in the cigarette reaching lungs.
Usually during smoking some kind of deep inhalation withholding and free exhalation happens which is supposed to be the correct way of breathing. Even if you breath as if you are smoking a cigarette, you will get the same relief from anxiety etc, without a cigarette, only by deep breathing. Cigarette is a placebo of plain TRUE deep breathing. Look at it differently.

Kantara is my favourite movie, I can give you 100 reasons why I love Kantara. I've seen thumbad and to be honest I didn't enjoy watching it, it was too dark and serious whereas Kantara is more fun, vibrant and colorful.
