    I'm a writer. I sit a lot. Waaaaaaay too much. So I've had sciatic/ITB/Psoas issues for years. (Decades. I'm not anywhere near as smart as I think I am, and keep making the same mistakes over and over again, even though I'm _somewhat_ mindful of things.) Anyway, I've learned from experience what can work to relieve 'that pain'. A friend's 85 year old mother was dealing with excruciating pain. 'Sciatica'. Been to doctors, et cetera. My friend told me this, and I instantly had a suggestion for him: one simple stretch that can be done supine or seated. He passed this along to his mom. About a week later, he handed me an envelope. In it, a 'Thank you' greeting card, expressing her gratitude for the advice I'd given. The pain had vanished over the interim time, and she was now a dedicated acolyte of the stretch. (I think she shared it with her hubby, who is even older than her.) 'Knowledge is power'.

    Been dealing with sciatica for the last 5 months, and also been to a therapist. I started with nerve flossing early. It started in the left leg and had pain in the leg and numbness in the foot during activity,. This has become better. Now I have it mostly in the right leg and have most pain in the mornings when I put weight on the leg and sometimes also in the evening. During daytime i feel mostly stiff in the hamstrings and buttock. I try to be a somehow active with walking, and avoid things that evokes pain. With a lot of home office these days the total amount of movement during a day has gone down, and it is easy to sit to much.

    Wonderful! I have bad sciatica nerve pain after a car crash and immune related degeneration and compression in my spine have really activated it in both sides! My left side hurts all the way in my ankle, so I tried the first one with a prop and it was very helpful, but I cannot increase in intensity too much myself. As per doctors orders, but thank you for some relief!

    I broke my back from someone kicking me in the lower back when I was 13 years old. I didn't know it had been broken until I was in my early 40s when sciatica started for me. My chiropractor at the time said that if my spine had shifted another quarter of an inch I would have been paralyzed. I have managed it pretty well until the last couple of years. Something has changed for sure. I now have intense pain when it feels stuck. I feel the pain mostly in my hip, down the outside of my thigh, underneath my kneecap, and all the way down my shin. It is intense burning shooting pain. I can barely walk bent over when it happens at the worst. I cannot straighten up and stand tall to just stand or walk when it happens. This will usually last at least 2 days at a time with only a few days between episodes. When it's happening and I sit on anything other than an exercise ball (sometimes even that hurts) any pressure on the area on the outside of my bum puts pressure and causes tingling, burning pain down the thigh, under the kneecap and down the shin. I have tried many things but doctors. I do not like doctors, enough said. I have to say I am getting tired of this though. Please let me know your thoughts. Also, readers, please don't berate me for not liking doctors. You don't know my whole story. Thank you.

      Thanks so much for sharing! It is really tough for me to say and I can't, unfortunately, give advice through the comments because I don't know all your history or health information. Low back can be very related to upper back and hip mobility as well as developing dynamic core stability. That could be a great place to start.

    Is it normal to have both neck pain and sciatica? Do those two things typically happen. I’ve been have sciatica issues for awhile but recently I’ve been feeling some tightness and stickiness in my neck too. Not asking for medical advice. Just general knwowledge ❤

    • @docjenfit
      @docjenfit  Рік тому

      It is hard to specifically say if they are related in your case. Neck pain could definitely be creating neural tension in a way that contributes to increasing sciatic tension as well. I would take a look at the overall neural tension in your spine. When you do these sciatic flossing exercises, does it increase any pain or symptoms in your neck? That is a sign they could be related.

    Hi- I'm a former athlete, suffered bike injuries to neck area in my 20s, and have had neck and now low back/hip pain for years. I now think much of this is nerve compression- exercises for TOS are helping, but the outside of my hips are also very tight. There is some sciatic pain w/o radiation, really a tight feeling throughout hips and sacrum. Would the sciatic nerve flossing help, or are there other exercises which would specifically address the tight hip sensation? Doctors have not helped at all! (And I am a Dr.)

    • @docjenfit
      @docjenfit  Рік тому

      Hi Susan! It can definitely be frustrating when we don't feel like we get answers on what we can do from professionals or doctors. If you feel like TOS-type exercises are helping, I would definitely keep incorporating those. Nerve flossing type exercises could also be a component. But the nerves are just one component of that. Why might those nerves be getting compressed? With the neck, it is important to look at upper back and chest/front of the body mobility to open up those areas around the neck where the nerves are coming out. Also working on Neck Stability exercises can be very opening and help that neck feel safe. Breathwork can also be beneficial to help reduce any tension from breathing into the upper chest and neck with all those accessory breathing muscles. The low back can also benefit from upper back mobility, breath work and dynamic core stability, along with hip mobility. Tight hips can cause us to put more pressure through the low back. If you are looking for specific programs to help explore all of these things, we have amazing Low Back, Neck, and Core plans on Jen Health. I get tingling in my heel and bottom of foot when my glutes are tight from working out. Sometimes the flossing makes it tingle more… would that still be nerve?

    • @docjenfit
      @docjenfit  Рік тому

      It could definitely just be a sign that the flossing is adding a little more tension into the system. If it increases the tingling but then that goes down when you stop the flossing, it is okay!

    So I got home from work and got out of my car and suddenly all the way from my tail bone to my ankle on my right leg hurt. I did the stretches and it helped but can I do them everyday to avoid future pain or is this just pain relief after it starts hurting? My mom said that there is such thing as over stretching a nerve but neither of know if these stretches could do that

    • @docjenfit
      @docjenfit  11 місяців тому +1

      You can definitely do these preventatively too! You absolutely don't want to "overstretch" the nerve. But this generally happens if you hold or sustain the stretch. If you overdo it, your body will generally tell you pretty quickly after the exercise. So just listen to how your body responds and you should be good!

    • @docjenfit
      @docjenfit  11 місяців тому

      It always depends based on your current symptoms and levels of irritability. It could be okay to just gently try a few of them and see how it feels and how your symptoms respond. Ultimately, it would be best to consult with someone in person though.

    Mine goes from the start of the left hip around the sacrum and stays in my butt (feels like a knot!). When bending down it pulls on that nerve and most days it's bearable. As a paramedic and a BJJ athlete it sucks trying to do anything lol

    • @docjenfit
      @docjenfit  Рік тому

      Keep working on it and with consistency it will hopefully start to relax! It can be good to try working on mobility and core stability all the way from shoulders to hips to find out why you may have started to develop this
