I remember my family bought me this for my 80th birthday. I hardly ever got to play it because Beryl my neighbour would always come over and play it. I caught her stealing a pumpkin from my garden and pressed charges. She got 6 years. I finally got a chance to play it.
Well, in fairness, the game DID come out in 1996 with a MSRP of $6.99. I was 3 years old at the time, and just so happened to end up with a physical copy when I was very young. I absolutely adored this game as a child, regardless of whether or not it irritated me like no tomorrow. I never beat it, occasionally got pretty far (no idea how close to the end I really was) but still enjoyed it thoroughly.
i did beat it eventually, but i remember it being very hard for me and it took me a long time. to beat it, i literally learned every level until i knew the position of every enemy. i also remember liking the soundtrack quite a lot. from this video, i have to say, it is not as good as i remembered, but still very fitting.
I've played this before. It gave me problems then I finally realized some of the tricks i didn't use. Then i've finally got it figured out and then suddenly I conquered!
Was 5 when this came out dad got me this game and Return Fire played them to death they both still hold up for me also i love the music and sound effects
I just received this game (long box) in the mail from an EBay purchase, GoodWill was the seller. They only asked $6 for it (free shipping) and the game is pretty much brand new. It looks like the wrapping was removed but never even opened. Once in a while I can still find a gem on EBay.
I developed a growing disdain for this game over the course of a summer. I had the misfortune of getting this and Street Fighter the Movie Game when we got the Playstation the summer before I started 7th grade. I spent nearly every day trying to beat this game, but it never happened. I got to stage 8 and made the boss begin to blink red before I died. No more continues. Never touched it again. While my skills have grown exponentially from that time, there are clear moments in this game where I could not tell where or how to dodge, if dodging was even possible. The music and sound effects are terrible. The graphics are definitely a product of the time so they mostly get a pass even though that opening FMV had some terrible destruction animations for the ships. Just floating away into separate polygons. Thank you for playing this, though. I can finally see how it ends and put this game to rest.
As bad as people say this game is, I can't forget it. It has similar controls as Panzer Dragoon, so I don't think the idea was bad. I just wish they used better quality instruments for the soundtrack.
Ugo that's what I just said. This may sound strange but you think that PlayStation sorta copied that idea? Made their own version of star fox 64 just with out the star fox team and everything else
Wow, the music in this game has to be some of the worst I've heard the Playstation put out. The music just kind of sounds like it's not even trying to drum up any excitement for the game its accompanying.
I agree. I can't believe how the game director approved that awful music. The soundtrack makes the game (which is ok) feel boring. Put a blood pumping techno-rock soundtrack and it would be a completely different game!
I know this comment is 3 years old, but I've rarely if ever have seen another person reference Colony Wars. I love that series to death and would just like to tell you that you have quality taste in games.
I have some nostalgia for this game, though from what I can gather it's pretty bad, maybe I will get a rom and see how bad it is for my self since I never got past stage 4.
another cool play by NPI! that said, sorry to say it but this game's a disappointment! I mean, sure, it's kinda like Taito's own Raystorm-meets-Nintendo's Starfox64... but with none of the luster of either one. Taito brought us SHM'UP gems like the Darius series, the Ray series, Gekirindan, Gun & Frontier, Grid-Seeker, and in my humble opinion their magnum-opus, Metal Black; and now they make a subpar, below-generic game like this? oh Taito, no wonder Square-Enix had to bail you out of near bankruptcy! it's just depressing!

Your 80th birthday???
Dang you old
Same exact thing happened to me.
Are you still here with us? You should be well over 100.
Beryl! That'll show her.

Oooo I still have my physical copy and never beat it as a kid! Colony Wars is a fantastic PS1 era space sim if you haven't heard of it.

I actually like the music and sound effects. Reminds me of late 80s arcade shooters
Actually funny thing is that the sound effects designer did the sound effects for the Salamander OVA.

Really taking advantage of the CD quality sound, I see...
lmao, I read this comment while the music is playing in the background...legendarily bad...

5:25 I called them exploding hamburgers 💀
This game always gave me an uneasy feeling when I played it when I was 6 or 7

It reminds me Starfox64
I was thinking the same... like Lylat Wars but less... good. Slower and more boring!
Ugo that's what I just said. This may sound strange but you think that PlayStation sorta copied that idea? Made their own version of star fox 64 just with out the star fox team and everything else
Gun14Slinger Everything is somehow copied from somewere. If the copy is good (and legal), then its fine.
Ugo that sounds good enough to me.
Starfox 64 came out 2 years after this
Needs a remake, digging the credits ost theme
Taito does Galaxy Force II or StarFox.
I remember renting this when I was 15 ... it was mediocre but OMG was the music atrocious! I've heard 8 bit games sound better ...

Sorry Sony, the space laurels of Sega/Mega-Cd will never be yours.
Not in a million light years, not even in a galaxy far far away.
I was never able to defeat Prowler boss because of the confine space..
This game isn't very bad... it's very strange.
Kinda feels like Ray Series + Star Fox.
Looks good to me.
This game wishes it was Galaxy Force II, but it isn't.
Yeah, deep space sagas were born and died on the PSX. Colony Wars was the only notable title (imo).
Omega Boost was top notch.

This could have been so much better... Taito has high and lows, this being one of the later
I have some nostalgia for this game, though from what I can gather it's pretty bad, maybe I will get a rom and see how bad it is for my self since I never got past stage 4.

Ray Storm In 3D
This is bascially a reskinned StarFox. I am surprised that Nintendo did not say something about this.
Why would I make it cuz im orange cuz im oramge cuz im orahge.17
the sound effects are bad too lol game looks cool tho altho compared to starfox64 it makes starfox look like ps2
No, the sound effects are good.
Idk why this game sorta in a way reminds me of Star Fox 64
es un Star Fox pero muy muy decadente
Terrible sound.
