I planted my tree from seed in South Florida about 13 years ago. It took about 7 years to fruit and I have been planting lots of these seeds ever since. My mom's tree is a seedling from my tree and hers took about 5 yrs to fruit. Once the roots are established it becomes a big tree quick!
Just so you know any compost made from mainly these plants will deter most parasites and bugs. Also they have nectar glands on their leaves which attract Insects such as butterflies and bees to help in pollination. They also do well in bad soil plus the thin leaves I am pretty sure is a recessive trait.
They have grown really well over the winter Kalem and all look healthy. I wish I could find these ice cream beans, it sounds so delicious and I would love to grow them. I hope they all continue to grow strong for you and maybe you will get some fruit one day :)
Hi kalem I just wanted to tell you that your my favorite channel. I am going to try this.I love your budgies. You inspired me to plant cool plants for a seed.So thanks you 100%. :)
Very interesting video Kalem. The seedlings all look wonderful and I love hearing all the wildlife sound in the background ^ ^ Do you have mature Ice-cream bean trees growing locally in your area? I think is would be real neat to see fruits hanging of one ;)
Wow you do awesome work planting icecream seeds. I would like to plant some icecream beens...... Can you sell me some seeds? I will pay for. I live in Mississippi USA.. Thanks, Isabella
This wonderful plant is known as “Pacay” in Peru, where I am from. The name ice cream bean is kinda interesting, it does taste delicious! Now here is Utah-US there is nowhere I can find it. I am going to get seeds and try it here!
Did your mangosteen germinate? My seeds rotted. Speaking of tender or 'ultra tropical' plants, I would love to grow a jackfruit or cacoa tree, just to find out whether it can be done in a temperate climate. Of course, such cold-intolerant species would be grown indoors as potted houseplants. In England, it can get so cold during autumn/winter (especially overnight) that I doubt my citrus plants would survive outdoors, let alone an ultra-tropical species!
Seeing how easily these germinate and grow, I have a hunch they could become an invasive plant in areas where conditions were favorable. I live in Oregon, and they are pretty strict about what can be sold here, but not sure how they control private gardens in that. I know our climate here might be close to yours down there, really wet into the 30's in winter, mild summers. Makes me think a lot of what you grown could be done here.
The seeds start to grow in a fresh pod but if they are not manually removed and planted then they will rot/ferment in the pod, or the pod will dry up. Inga seeds are recalcitrant and must remain moist and planted quickly. If they get dry they are no longer viable. I've never had one start to grow by itself near my trees.
I am intrigued how they grew two plants per seed. I wonder if this is analogous to twins. Hmmm... Any thoughts? I recently purchased a couple icecream bean plants, some had a couple plants growing in them, and after watching this, I bet that they came from the same seed.
***** Yes, but within the same embryo, which makes it seem like twins. I bought two of these plants from a local private nursery. They had what at the time I thought were pups growing from the root system of the main plants, much like aloe or aspens do. However after watching this video I was curious if maybe this was not the case. I realized that they were in fact independent root systems and repotted them. As a result I got 2 large and 2 small plants for the price of 2! I live in Arizona, where the temps are range from 105-115 from early June until mid August with low humidity, so unfortunately they require a shade cloth and aren't any threat to other plants. They are in the legume family, so if they are as tenacious as you say, they would be excellent for reforesting as they would improve soil structure by encouraging nitrogen fixation. Do you permaculture much?
***** Sounds great! Cheaper to start off small, seeds if you have the patience. I can germinate a forest of seeds in a few weeks, but many plants like your meyer lemon need to come from cuttings. I used to do a lot when I had my own house and I guerilla gardened frequently, however now I live in an apartment, so I am limited. I would recommend planting as many legumes as possible immediately to increase your soil potential. Florida is like a gardeners paradise!
+phantomcreamer They did come from the same seed. It is called polyembryony. In polyembryonic seeds, there is usually one zygotic embryo, but the others are clones of the mother tree. This is common in citrus trees, mangoes, and many other plants.
I sowed about a dozen of these seeds about 2 months ago, and as you said, pretty much a 100% germination rate. I'm going to put them in bigger pots soon and then eventually the ground. Has anyone successfully grown these in Southern California? If so, I'm wondering the best kind of soil, considering I'm going to have to do a LOT of watering in the dry/hot summer months. Thanks! I can't wait to hopefully one day taste one of these.
Everyone asking for him to sell some seeds needs to know that most countries have very strict import regulations when it comes to living material. Check your countries (and state) laws on importing and then check ebay ;)
Does anyone know if this type of plant could grow in Oregon? Outside a greenhouse, I mean? I understand that it's a tropical plant, but could it thrive as well in cool temperate rainforests? It would surely get enough water.
@@TheKiwiGrower it isn't possible to get seeds? paid for or otherwise? :( i have never seen this fruit before and i know of no place here that has the plants or seeds...
I got interested in this kind of tree because it grows faster than other kind of trees from the time you bury its seeds into the plastic pot. Each seeds can produce two or more seedlings. Its stem is flexible that it cannot be broken when it is bent down. If it is cut, it can bear branches to continue its growth. Its fruits are eatable. That is why I have hundreds of seedlings, fully grown, ready to be planted. However, because of this COVID problem, I cannot bring them home so I might as well distribute it to the City Environment, to the Chinese-Filipino Association, and to some others, if they are interested. For readers, you may search it in the internet.
hi dudes. im from philippines how can i get some seed of the tree, coz i think right now there not yet such trees here so hope you give me some seeds. thank you...

Watching this video brought me to my childhood, have not eat this for over 20 years. Thanks for showing this vid, hope you enjoy this delicious fruit
I've been looking forward for growing these from seeds, you are doing really well, almost 100,000 views! Amazing work Kalem and great video :)

I am living in Tay Ninh, Vietnam. Where can I buy seeds or seedlings of this Inga edulis? Please just help me. Thank you very much.
How soon after peeling the fruit the seeds can be planted. Would the seeds die if I keep them in dry paper maybe for 2-3weeks?
How can we get seeds of this lovely fruit plant?

Note the reason why the ones in soil were slower was due to cool soil temperatures. This is true of most things.
