The band was founded in 1975 by high school graduates Jan Bilk and Tomas Nawka near Bautzen under the name SERVIPACIS. In the first years, Servi was a pure church band, which only appeared in the church. The bandname translated from German means "servant of peace". The two musicians moved to Berlin in 1978 due to their studies, where they first looked for new fellow musicians and found in Friedemann Weigle (drums, guitar), Georg Kaminiczny (guitar), Benjamin Langhammer (bass). From 1981 onwards, they changed the musical style towards electronics, reduced themselves to a duo and from then on played on 100 concerts with exclusively own titles in churches. At the time, SERVI was an innovative band with its own ideas and, above all, "revolutionary" acts. The duo self-produced their album Vertrauen (Trust) in 1983, which they also distributed themselves. It was only available on the music cassette and was the first privately produced record, which could be freely sold in the GDR. Jan Bilk and Thomas Nawka played many concerts and were enthusiastic about an ever-growing audience. Their second album had already been produced and they wanted to publish it again in their own distribution, because AMIGA had to wait to publish it because of the church concert activity. The label used the already produced material for the LP Rückkehr aus Ithaka (Return from Ithaca), without even a title being produced in the "state" studios. This meant that SERVI was the first band in the GDR to make their own production, neither in the studios of the AMIGA nor in the radio, but they were able to publish the finished product via AMIGA and also indicated this on the album cover. Until the turnaround, AMIGA released Pas de Deux in H a second LP of SERVI. Jan Bilk and Thomas Nawka also played numerous radio play and film music during this time. Shortly after the turn of the century, the first complete CD Electronia was released at Musicando. Shortly thereafter, the two musicians founded their own record label SERVIsound. In 1995 they released the album Meditatio in Variatione. In the same year, the duo also performed live again and gave the audience a spectacular multimedia show, which they performed in churches. "Church in the New Light - Church in a New Sound" was the motto of the two artists. In 2004 the last concert of SERVI took place in the duo-ensemble Bilk / Nawka. In the same year, Thomas Nawka left the band and Jan Bilk re-formed the SERVI project with other musicians, including Bilke's children Carolina Eyck (synthesizer, theremin, viola) and Roman Eyck (contrabass, e-violin).

Thank you for reuniting me with this record which is one of the early pieces of my electronic music collection. I bought it in the former East-German Cultural Centre in Budapest in the late 80s and i haven't listened to it for ages. A strange, but still great record. I appreciate your work, it's cool to vinyl together...

Sweet, original Vaporwave record, shamefully underrated! Music, conception, and artwork are very stylish. Especially Laistrygonen with this funky Proto-Rave-Ambient-Pads is just lovely.

Waren das Zeiten... Stamer, Lakomy, Oleak, Pond, Servi... der Osten hatte eine große Electronic-Szene damals, die international absolut mithalten konnte.
