  • Santa Rosa Island is the third closest of the Channel Islands in Channel Islands National Park. I set out to do a day trip there in October of 2020 and wanted to share it with you. On the trip, I hiked Cherry Canyon, spent time at Water Canyon Beach, and then walked the Coastal Trail. I also got to see Painted Cave, one of the world's largest sea caves on the way back.

    I saw this video a few months back and immediately booked a trip for my husband and is anniversary. We stayed two nights and what we saw was seriously another level. Thank you so much for making this video. I really really mean it. I would never have thought to even explore the Channel Islands without it!!

    Went out and camped here this past weekend with my wife- we’ve always seen these islands in the distance off the coast and have wanted to go check them out. We then saw your video and immediately booked our trip (had to book a few months prior/plan ahead). Well worth the wait, this place truly felt like another world/some kind of heaven. If you go in spring time all of the flowers are in bloom and whales, dolphins, sea lions roam the ocean and bay right in front of you on the beach. The hikes you get to pull off here while your camping are truly remarkable as well, still can’t believe we were able to experience such immense beauty right off the coast of where we live. Definitely an epic trip you remember for the rest of your entire life.
    Thanks so much for posting/sharing your video man! We’ll never forget it.

      Hi, may I ask did you camp in spring? Like around what month? Was it really windy? How rough was the boat ride to the island in spring?

    • @kevinpkearney
      @kevinpkearney 2 роки тому +1

      @@GwuNC it was end of March, it was a bit windy but we enjoyed the breeze bc it cooled you down. the ride out wasn't bad but several people puked on the way back lol. Don't let that deter you though, there's nowhere like it on earth.

    • @kevinpkearney
      @kevinpkearney 6 місяців тому

      Skunk Point is an absolute must if you like tide pools and beaches because of all the terrain differences and wild life you will see swinging around in the ocean (very surreal). But bring a decent amount of water for this one, it can be an all-day hike if you're really into taking everything in-- definitely plan ahead for your hike back too (on windy days, east point road is more difficult than it looks to get to once you hook around/pass Skunk Point). The second trail I'm about to tell you about though is one I haven't heard too many people talk about-- if you start by the bathrooms near the school/buildings at "Main Road" and take Main Road up to Cherry Canyon Trail, it is THE most beautiful creek hiking trail through vibrant flower patches, trees, etc and then brings you to the top of the hills where you will have some of the best views of the island. Be really careful if it's a windy day. The gusts were like 50mph+ the day we did it (they cancelled our boat ride home because of it) and so we just aimlessly walked through CCT not thinking we'd end up on top of a huge exposed hill in those conditions. As unsafe as it felt doing that, it was one of the most epic sights we've ever seen. And it spits you out right back at the campsite which is a major plus. I haven't done Lobo Canyon yet, that's left for next time. Have the best time over there! @@jadenlesser8519

    Painted Cave is a popular stop along Santa Cruz Island for charter boats making their return trip to the harbor. Santa Miguel has an amazing pristine beach as well but a much longer and more iffy boat ride. For quicker, easier boat ride Anacapa is a very unique island to explore but there's no beach access. One of these days would be great to do a camping trip to Santa Cruz or Rosa. I've spent a number of years scuba diving around all the Channel Islands. And a couple of day trips topside to some of the islands as well.

    Funny story. Way back in the late 60s early 70s, I was just a pre-teen barely a teenager at this time. My grandparents lived in Santa Barbara and I used to stay at their house during the summers. I used to take my bike ever morning and go fishing at Fisherman's Wharf. The funny thing was, after having bee there many times I just so happened tp noticed this island. I asked about it and was told it was Santa Rosa.
    I dont know if it was a teenage thing ot what but I never noticed that island before.......... or maybe it was just hazy weather and I didnt see it. I have not been in California since 1977. I remember back then that abalone was everywhere, especially at Santa Rosa. Now I understand it is illegal to even touch them. I had an abalone shell from there but wished I knew what happened to it.

    had to wear a mask on the boat outside in fresh air? Wow. Thanks for the views. Have you gone to see the giant seals during mating season? During the rain is better I went too late the year I went and mostly there were only a few seal pups left on the beach. The male sealions are as big as a truck and I wouldn't want to mess with them. It was Northern CA but I can't remember the exact type of seal, not walruses...arghhh

      @@a1exsand masks are proven ineffective to stop any virus, even printed on some of the boxes, plus "cases" have only increased with mask mandates, which are NOT a law by the way. And it's hard to breathe in them.
      If masks stop virus, why have cases increased? Seems pretty straight forward that they don't work.

    I read this "It’s a 3-hour boat ride each way from Ventura, so day trips aren’t practical." On visit California .com Just wondering how you managed to do a day trip?

      Yea it’s a 3 hour boat ride each way. So you only get about 4 hours on the island. It’s a lot of work for only 4 hours but you can do it haha

    I'm writing a novel based in California, featuring excursions, and I watched this video to see whether my characters will go there. Thanks or the tour.
