- Often called the Galapagos of North America, the eight Channel Islands lay in plain sight of millions of people off the Southern California coast. Yet few know their names or even how many there are. And fewer still know the fascinating tales of those who have lived, worked, discovered, surfed, dived, ranched, wrecked, or were rescued on these unique and beautiful islands. Told in thirteen different tales.

I'm Swiss and I never saw any doc about the channel islands in Cali but this will sure not be my last, this doc got me all emotional, from the beginning to the end! What an amazing history, landscape and people there... I hope when I pass, my soul will visit all of the islands before I definitively leave this place, to bathe in the serenity and absolute beauty of this special corner on this earth! Thank you for this upload!
❤
I'm Norwegian, and I feel the exact same way. What a fascinating little nook of history!
You are from Switzerland? From what city? My American Chicago friend married a Bally engineer in Zurich. 💓
Exactly. I am interested in natural history, not emotional gushing. 🥺😢😭
Anne, you should try to visit if at all possible. I spent many summers on Catalina Island when I was growing up, and there is just a certain vibration, smell, and feeling there.
The book "The Island of the Blue Dophins" changed my life, and I was thrilled to find this video
My mother sent my copy of that book- from circa 1978 for my daughters to enjoy. She remembered how much it meant to me.
I loved that book too! Thanks for the reminder!
The book is so heartbreaking to read as an adult. As a child, it sounds like such an adventure. As a mother, it made me cry. It's beautifully written. It's hard to learn about the true ending of her life. How it continued to be lonely. It's a sad story.
What an enjoyable and educational experience. I appreciate your effort to bring lesser known areas to our attention. I am the richer for these documentaries.
It's a Time Capsule.
It's very intentional, items are related. They tell a story.
This is an incredible, historic find that can't be hidden from us now.
This was amazing!! 💗😭💗
I’m from California, born and raised here, still live here, and love this state so much! But I’ve been beginning to realize how little I know about this place, and how much I want to learn more.
The part that made me particularly emotional was about Juana Maria, the lone woman of San Nicolas Island. I first read the book “Island of the Blue Dolphins” in 4th Grade, and I’ve loved it ever since. I remember my class talking about her history, and even watched a movie adaptation of the book.
I still have a copy of the book, and will reread it from time to time. I’m not sure what I loved specifically about it as a child (other than it being beautifully written), but it hits way differently reading it as an adult. Now whenever I reread it, it never fails to make me cry!!
I knew practically nothing about the Channel Islands, so this was a great educational experience. I look forward to finding out more about them, and my beloved California in general. 💜
What do you like about California? What are the top things you treasure?
I also read and loved that book in 4th grade! 🐬🌊💙
@@SweetChicagoGator weather and geography, definitely! The Mediterranean climate, the beautiful hills & mountains, the trees, and the coastline. So beautiful!! I can easily summarize it with that, but I can definitely give specific details about both categories if asked. 😁
I also love and appreciate the diversity in people here- I love how diverse Cali is in terms of ethnic & cultural groups. So because of that, and because I live in capital city region, I love the different types of cuisines you can find. I have a long list of ethnic restaurants I want to go to, lol! I love trying out new cuisines and learning about their origin countries. I mean, food is a type of love language, and you can learn so much about people and their culture that way! (I’m a total foodie, and I love to cook & bake, love trying out recipes from different countries, so I talk about food a lot. LOL!)
Speaking of food, since California used to be apart of Mexico, it’s pretty easy to find great Mexican restaurants just about anywhere you go. I looove Mexican food! 🤤
…and now I’m really hungry and craving multiple types of cuisines. LOL
@@Ashaliyeva
As a former assistant Chef I love to cook as well and go to ethnic restaurants. Love Mexican and I live in Chicago and we have plenty of Mexican restaurants that are delicious ! Great description you gave of your likes of California geography.
What kind of work do you do? I'm mostly retired, but do a little catering on the side. ☝️😀🤗
@@SweetChicagoGator nice! Cooking is amazing, I mean, who doesn’t love eating good food? I’ve never visited Chicago, but if I ever do, I definitely look forward to trying the pizza. 😁🍕
As far as work, I’ve predominantly been in childcare: mostly as a nanny, and working with elementary school children. But due to a really crappy, lifelong autoimmune illness, I’ve been more or less “housewifing” (lol) for the last several years. I still often take care of my loved one’s kids, and will house sit & pet sit for family & friends, when needed. 💜
I woke up and watched this w my coffee in the morning. It was such a good piece. I absolutely adored all of the history and the animals of the Islands. Then you speak of their beliefs and things they've done for many years. It got me emotional.God bless all who were a part of the Islands and writing this piece, it filled my mind and heart w knowledge. 💓
I have never seen a documentary about the California islands, only Alcatraz. Thanks for the video!💕🇺🇲
I'm a 2nd generation native Californian, daughter of a migrant farm worker who worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the influx of dust bowl "Okies". In 1964 I boarded a Navy Constellation and flew for the first time in my life. We landed on "The Rock", what many called San Nicolas Island at the time. It was almost completely barren except for the shacks & radar dishes, and the quarters, mess, etc. that supported the workers, both military and civilian. I'd read, "Island of the Blue Dolphins" but couldn't associate the idyllic notion it portrayed, with this sterile looking wasteland around me. Today, seeing the dedication of so many to the restoration and preservation of the islands fills me with gratitude.
What a fantastic documentary!
Beautiful weaving of history and stories through a timeline so diverse. Thank you I loved it!
Absolutely stunning and beautiful..I was crying my eyes out at the very end for sure
From beginning to end, this is the most beautiful, loving, spiritual documentary I've ever watched. This touches on so many aspects of the Awakening.
Matt Walsh is a Lightworker & I believe he knows it 💫
Matt Walsh was in this?
@@melissaallison8463 Maybe they meant to write Joe Walsh?
You mean Joe walch from the eagles
I loved this! My dad did research from mid60's to '73 on Flathead Lake in MT, that helped with the ban of DDT. There was a dangerous decline in the Osprey population, due to cherry growers using DDT in the orchards. The over spray went into the lake, the fish ingested the DDT,
and soft shell eggs were not hatching. I'm so happy to see areas that were poisoned by DDT come back to natural wildlife. Great job to everyone involved. My dad would've loved to see this.....
I live on the coast of Ventura County and these are what I call my Islands.
this was so neat! thank you.🌻
Taking that bag of trash to the person who left it “I believe you left this on my island”. Epic!
Nothing more hilarious than the pure excitement in that archeologist who found the jewelry box lol so cool tho
This is such a gem !! Born and raised in Southern California I remember the rehabilitation issues at that time. This documentary is a real find.
That's the first document I've seen on the Channel Islands. Thank you.
The story of the bag of trash that had a piece of mail in it was, for me, a very Alice's Restaurant moment.
@HistoryHit KEEP making documentaries! Y’all are in my top 2 for history docs (along with Timeline)!
Completely and totally awesome!
Really loved this, thank you. I grew up in SoCal but I’ve never been to any of the Channel Islands and I really hope to one day. My family recently spread my parents ashes near Catalina. My dad loved it there. We came close to moving to Catalina when I was in high school.
Thank you! I’m truly grateful for this documentary and the opportunity to learn about these islands & their history.
Loved this documentary. What an amazing time capsule!
So glad I watched this….thank you.
Awesome documentary and visual history. Thanks for the brief look in!
When it comes to conservation in its early days, I recommend listening to Plateau by the Meat Puppets.
It is always important to connect with country. Through the song lines and the knowledge of the land.
Oh when this popped up I gasped!!
I’m actually somewhat aware of these islands. I’m born and raised in Santa Monica and I’ve been to Santa Cruz Island, spent the day hiking from Prisoners Harbor to Pelican Bay viewpoint with my Aunt from Minnesota. It was one of the best days!
Taking the ferry over and feeling so small. To the untouched, pristine nature…it was AMAZING!
We did some research at the time but neither of us knew THE Joe Walsh is involved in the preservation. Makes us love him ever more! Which we didn’t know was possible.
I’m so grateful to be from here, I tell myself every day and I know how lucky I am❤
Good documentary. Just heard about this island last night and want to visit
Thank you👍🏻
Its weird they didn't talk about the Channel Islands Pygmy Mammoth. It was very cool they spoke of the red wood box.
So amazing that the canoe medicine has been revived.
Thank you for sharing blessings.
I'm reading island of the blue dolphins with my daughter. fantastic doc
What a fantastic documentary! I'm from the east coast and honestly never gave the islands much thought. It was wonderful to learn of the extensive history and see the flora and fauna ❤
I can see Catalina from my house on most days, sometimes so clearly you can practically count the trees.
I worked in the music industry for a good portion of my life, & always knew that Joe Walsh was an exceptional man, by virtue of the fact that he was able to remain in a band with Don Henley for as long as he did! To say that Don is a bigger jerk than Gene Simmons & Ted Nugent COMBINED would be a gross understatement of epic proportions.
Joe's quite the opposite. I'm so glad, & not at all surprised, to learn that he found something as worthwhile as the preservation of Santa Cruz Island to provide a sense of purpose & keep him grounded. It's rare that a man can look back on his life's accomplishments & say that he will leave this world a better place than he found it. Thanks for all you've done, Joe! You're the real deal! 💯🌎❤️ ✌🏼
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Amazing video and history. I'm a native Californian and had no idea of this history. Thank you for this story!
What ever became of the original natives that lived there?
They were moved to the mainland. I saw the series on here a year or so ago.
The last story. 😭🥰❤️
I've been diving around all of the islands off our coast, they're all unique and so interesting. I've hiked on a couple of the islands too, camped on Catalina. Went diving with the Cousteau film crew off Santa Barbara Island when they did a series about the Channel Islands. I hiked San Miguel Island with a relative of the King of San Miguel who lived on the island for a number of years along with his family.
Amazing video. Born in San Francisco and had no idea about the islands.
When at UCSB Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz were directly off shore. Wonder if Joe fell in love w them when he lived in Santa Barbara ? The islands seemed part of SB all the while not. I recall a disagreement on the removal of some residents on one of the islands. Great documentary there has been a trend in history to ignore recent history. Like there was nothing from 1700 til now. It's all history from. Geology to now. Thanks. Like the part re the chappel. I have been involved in an old Chapel in N San Diego county. Nice got to use my degree in history it left a great impression on me. I appreciate these guys reverance and excitement of the history. Again thanks Lucky this popped up on u tube.
Please make the movie about the spirit of Juana Maria!!!!
Never heard of CA channel Isles. ❤️ the story of The lone woman on the island, she must have had fantastic bartering and trading skills... Or a great set of eyelashes?!!
I watch many expats in Portugal who are homesteading like you. Many have had the same obstacles in their path, so don't give up. It would be helpful to talk with some of them. Nick and Andrea with Project Portugal have lots of experience, and likely good advice as well. The Newbys are also in their first year, and PipsCast have just been dealing with the same issues as you.
Check in and talk to some, it may be very useful to find out how others are managing.
Good luck and take a good look at all you've accomplished .You should be very proud of what you've done so far!!💕
Sure was!!
The island the history the geography the people and the Joe Walsh I never knew...Thank You
When he sold the island to the conservatory I do not think he wanted his peole to be kicked off it. That is so sad.
My wife and I honeymooned on Catalina Island. We toured the backcountry and saw a perspective of what California used to look like before we changed it. To put it mildly. Thank you.
Beautiful show. I’m so glad native lives are being relived and the culture celebrated.
🪶🫶🏼✨
Do we need a better example of "think globally, act locally? And Mr Walsh, so glad you have your peace my friend. Labour with love and the world is your oyster.
"If you love the islands, please don't come here"
💕
There is an American girl book about a young girl who was on the island across the sea was the mission of Santa Barbara it was a native girl who was left alone on one of the Channel Islands. My daughter and I read it together when she was about 8-10 years old she is 30 now.
Thank you for sharing this video, so BEAUTIFUL this video was.
and I am a HUGE FAN OF Joe Walsh and his music, so great to see so many things that I never knew and I am a born and raised California girl at heart.
And I want to add that IT'S A SHAME WHAT HUMANS CAN DO TO THE PLANET!!!
Cool
I have History Hits trial and I honestly can't find 99% of the cool videos I find on UA-cam on the actual site! WTF!?
Wow.
Sent to my son
Who's the narrator? Joe Walsh??? Wow!
Video title should be Joe Walsh and the Island 🏝 lol
I helped clean Santa Cruz Island. I live in Ventura/Santa Barbara.
When was this made? 27 years on the island? From the 70s?
And ppl wonder why California is so nutty...........
Natives while Obama/ Pelosi bring in over 2 Million immigrants with Fentanyl.
Hypocrisy manipulation for Elite lifestyle.
Just when I thought Joe Walsh couldn’t possibly be cooler….
How does people who are of no relation to the natives who had no concept of owning and selling suddenly OWN what never was theirs and now selling it ?
Yeah well I'd like to restore my whole city... 😥
So nice to see Joe giving back to the days of Ol; The man’s a ‘giver; gave us unforgettable music and now, expands our knowledge of days gone by=Heart of Gold
I like the way this shows the clear difference between true conservationist and animal rights activist. We were left to draw out own conclusions based on facts. The activist don't know or care to learn about the reason why something is being done, it's only about the cause.
Self entitled rage & angst vs genuine caring & knowledge.
My Alias: Dear friend, you are lumping together all animal rights activists, without differentiating
between those who do truly find out the facts and act to do just what was done on the island. We
just want to stop cruelty and lack of compassion. I was very moved and impressed by this
documentary, and I live across from the Channel Islands. It was most informative and Kudos to
all the people who got together to restore Santa Cruz to its original state. God bless people with
foresight and caring, it shows that we CAN restore our precious earth when we get together and do
our best.
Channel Islands, named after UK Channel Islands in English Channel. ❤ never knew Cali had islands.
Didn’t know it was named after it! you’re so smart
Should have called time team. They would have excavated the box in 3 days
We went to Catalina Island on weekend pass from Naval base had no reservations slept on the golf course almost got hit w/ balls 😂
A re-upload? I know I have seen this on this channel within the past 2 years
"California hotel " "California hotel "
"Hotel California " "yeah whatever "
Oh no I hope the bald Eagle didn't run into those giant windmills California uses for electricity, that still have black outs. #save the animals
Hypocrisy of Obama 3
"If you love this island for gods sake don't come here." Did he leave the island or does his not love it? Lol
This is your brain on drugs! Shows Joe Walsh.
Nothing goes wild like pigs.
Holy cow Joe just say no
This is a great story, but can we say brain fry on the Eagles band?
“You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.”
Those idiots dropping rat poison. Then the Eagles and the foxes would ingest the poison.
Doc Stanton sounds like he was on the spectrum lol
What do you mean, once all the native Americans were gone.
Gods
I wonder why only native on all the islands. Some like wild horses the gov killing animals w 100s of years of history. In most cases longer than 90% of the people. 300 years is historic also. Tough question. I used to pig hunt up past SLO. You are going to find someone who disagrees w any policy. As long as you get a clean shot and put the pig down fast is a hunters creed. Luckily there are a few islands possibly slightly different goals on different islands. Not my fight not my area. Glad you showed all these carried views and histories. A note Santa Barbara the one place in California where a presidio was before a mission as i recall. In a perverse way a statement of respect of the of the Chumash. The Spanish feared them.
"Everyone who opened the boxes later claimed to be haunted before each met unusual and unexpected early demise." Just kidding. Science is real, ghosts and curses aren't. 😁😁😁
Joe Walsh...how can you not absolutely love Joe....WALSH FOR PRESIDENT
🤘🤣🤘
what a great country it would be!!!
An old junk drawer 😉😛
the opening shouting female vocal is that necessary . . .. ..
Tone-deaf building a church on the island! So disrespectful!
Please stop calling it Cali… as a 10th generation Californian, I really hate that abbreviation. California is named for Queen Calafia from the Adventures of Esplandian and deserves better than such a stupid nickname.
Good grief.
I’m going, going, back, back, to Cali, Cali.
I'll just call it Cal from now on.
based
Hate the abbreviation too. Then we should say Okie, Toners, Cheese heads, Bamers, Tar Heel, Muskrats, etc.
As a Catholic I'm offended that that little Catholic church was allowed to be desecrated by that guy signing near the high altar. He is not even a Christian from what he said. The altar is not a place for a concert. It is a place of Christ's sacrifice for us. I'm so tired of hearing everybody talk about people who take over other's cultures but there's nothing being said about Catholic churches and our Catholic faith being desecrated by non-christians or non-catholics.
KMF....
Why aren't you mentioning the endless # of pedophiles, that have been linked to the Catholic church?
As a non Catholic I am offended by the priests raping young children and never paying for their crimes. The church just hides their past and move them on to another unsupervised and unsuspecting parish. I may not know Joe , at all, but have never heard about him ruining young children's lives. I am also offended by your Holier-than-thou attitude. Jesus would not behave or talk like you, you false Christian.
@@fabledfantasty7343 I agree with you those pedophiles are absolutely reprehensible but that's not what we're talkin about here. We're talking about a Sacred Space of a Catholic Church that is being used for secular purposes
@@wlfrdr I agree with you I'm also offended by priest raping children and I think they ought to be put in jail for the rest of their lives
Not sure that constitutes "taking over other's cultures," but when he comes to sing at your Catholic church on your island you can tell him where to get off.
Typical feminist. Blame men for something she could of done for herself at any point in her life
The Hawaiian Islands are much better than the Channel Islands.
No they arent lmao, they are full of tourists and modern civilization.
They are two completely different animals!
you let foreigners live on your island currently..
