Due to the clash between cultures, Japan has had to create future seasons of pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and many other franchises, with american family audiences in mind from the start. Meaning, the original japanese modern seasons no longer contain anywhere near as much adult content, including a toning down of cartoon violence, so now if you compare both versions, the differences will not be all that much. Essentially, Japan is having to censor themselves, to please america. Even Sony is censoring itself to please american culture. In fact, Sony has closed down all of its japanese studios in favor of opening american studios, which means Sony is more american than japanese at this point. We are indirectly changing japanese culture.

😂 though to be honest, all text is removed wether it's English or not because at some point they will want to remove some words, so for the sake of not leaving some parts of the anime with text and others without text, they remove everything to keep it even. Same might go for the soundtrack. They'd rather remove the entire music and replace all of it than to leave the anime sounding weird with a mix of American and japanese music. There's a handful of Japanese music themes that were too "dramatically heavy" for the American version, and replacing only some of those with modern american music would make it all uneven. That, and additional money might have to be payed to the japanese creators to licence the music, we all know music isn't cheap, but dubbing companies might be cheap.

When I was a kid, that date episode definitely confused me. It was pretty obvious that everything they did were things you would do on a date. What didn't make sense was how any of that was supposed to help awaken the memory of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. Glad to finally know what was up. Kids are definitely smarter than our society gives them credit for. They're still dumb, but underrated. Though I worry to what extent stuff like this actually makes kids DUMBER.

Love how for the shower scene in the Japanese version both mai and yugi help give tea privacy. Just the fact of yugi holding Tristan and Joey Back long enough for mai to knock them both over the head is a nice touch highlighting both’s personalities.

A lot of people don't know this, but FUNimation bought the Yugioh rights from 4kids and redid the first couple episodes with even the original actors to be much more faithful to the original version and removed the visual censorship, no obnoxiously loud music, and original Japanese cards. They wanted to do the whole series but it wasn't getting enough money. In it you can see Tea and Tristan do the bathroom scene right.

Honestly I’m kinda glad in a way they focused more on the “What is Pharaoh’s backstory” the most. I think the rest of the censorships are unneeded but if you asked 6 year old me if I wanted to see Yami Yugi go on a date with Tea I would be bored out of my mind. The only thing I even liked about that episode was when Tea suggested to go to the museum where we did get a bit of pharaohs backstory. He was changed in the english dub many times. They made him want to see her belly button instead of her panties, not to mention a lot of scenes with him originally were removed until many years later. But besides him Goku got a lot of censoring as well in the dub that was made. I still remember when I first watched the first tournament where his tail grew back. The audience asked him if it was real and he literally mooned everyone to while showing it was real. In other words Goku would get it just as bad if 4kids were in change.
Which he did when 4Kids was allowed to air Dragonball Z Kai on CW4Kids. Not only did they remove the blood and other kid-unfriendly content, but they also made other retarded changes (like turning Mr. Popo blue and changing the halos the orbs).

You seem to think 4kids chose to make all those edits for Yugioh? They were just following orders the entire time, which is why the excessive censorship in Yugioh continued long after they were bought by Konami. If you've seen the trading card edits you'll know that it was all Konami's doing. If you've seen the Pokemon anime you'll notice it was allowed to get away with so much more in the English Dub. Squirtle Squad (Episode 12) had everyone in a store pull a gun on Ash kept intact in English. 4kids actually dubbed the Porygon Episode, however wasn't allowed to release it because of the world wide ban. Nintendo wasn't ordering 4kids to censor the series any further than FCC requirements. If Konami tried pulling their crap these days with Yugioh on the Pokemon Anime, I don't think Brock would have his running gag. Not all 4kids series got equal levels of censorship, with Yugioh getting the most absurd amounts of it even though it was unnecessary. Then series like Viva Pinata & Pokemon got almost no censorship overall in comparison.

I actually like the dub version of where Mai talks to Joey. Helps show off Joey's bashfulness when being complemented by a girl and Mai's sarcasm when she adds "and a cute apron" as well as their developing friendship (and gives the shippers some ammo).
I think back when YGO was originally airing, the view that 'cartoons are for children' was still strong with western audiences, combine that with them not really differentiating between cartoons and anime and you get this crap.
in japan, there are various age demographic: barelly more than toddler, little kids, kids a bit older, pre-puberal, full-out-teen, late teen. plus mature adult and inmature adult in the west, there were a lot less: toddler, a bit older, why the heck are you still watching cartoon at your age, mature adult. at this point, many people are realizing that there may be something more in it, mostly because of the explosion of serials with surreal stuff even in the limits of reality (gray's anatomy & CSI anyone?) in contrast with the "national serial" and soap operas that where the royalty of television back then. the fact internet gave an interactive access to the research of stuff to see was in the end the downfall of "absolust regimes" like 4kids

Téa/Anzu was one of my anime crushes growing up. She seemed to be that girl next door whom you'd be happy to get along with. She had a pretty face and she looked good in most of her outfits. Wish that Kazuki Takahashi made her do more than just root for Yugi and Joey, though.

I adore the voice actors and music of the english dub (I love the original music as well, both are great in their own way), but can easily agree that most of the changes 4kids made were so, so bad. It's such a shame cause the voice actors are super talented and deserve better.
They also changed the dialogue to make her more MUH FRIENDSHIP in the dub when in the original she wasn't dropping nearly as many friendship speeches. :/
She absolutely drops friendship speeches all the time in the sub, she is downright obsessed with it haha. Now granted I haven’t watched the dub in many years so it’s somehow possible she talks about friendship even more in the dub? But honestly I doubt there’s much difference, it’s a part of her character in both versions.
While I agree that a lot of these changes were ridiculous, to be fair putting it on Saturday morning cartoons in the first place was a stretch. Certain arcs like Duelist Kingdom only had typical edits (dialogue, guns, body parts, etc,) but others like the Battle City arc required heavy editing due to all the OBVIOUS death references (it was pretty plain obvious to me even as a kid that those were not "magical discs that would send you to the shadow realm.") Furthermore, the series as a whole was rushed because they were trying to make it the next success like Pokemon was. Dark Side of Dimensions was done much more smoothly as there were no edits and the only thing I feel it lacks (save the occasional SDA from a character, which surprisingly there were very few of) is that they changed the music (which even then, it was watchable; I have heard MUCH worse dub-made soundtracks.) As for the edits to Tea's character in specific, I wasn't surprised about most of them because at the time the show came out, it was considered the norm to edit anime because it was automatically labeled as a children's cartoon and most of these edits were ones found in other popular anime at the time such as Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, and Pokemon. I was, however, confused about the removal of her jealousy towards Yugi, especially considering they were fine with Rebecca and Vivian having crushes on him. While the relationship wasn't entirely removed and the little scene may have been removed for time (the US has a lot more commercials than Japan after all,) Tea actually IS Yugi's age. Vivian is older than Yugi (about Mai's age to be precise) and Rebecca is younger than Yugi (10 in the Japanese, 8 in the American) so this baffles me. I get that the show's main focus isn't relationships, but still I'm confused. LOL With that being said, I still have fond memories of it and adore the voice actors, though I feel there are other series that show them at their best. Slayers was a direct-to-DVD series that most of the Yu-Gi-Oh cast worked on and Viva Pinata was actually a pretty funny prelay show where they just got to be themselves without having to match lip flap.
Funimation tried to but they didn't know that 4kids was doing it behind T.V Tokyo's back so that's why we don't have a re-dub. Its likely that we won't get one because Konami owns 4K Media (Neo 4kids basically) and refuses to. DSOD is the most accurate translation of YGO we're going to get.
YumeShiinaide and DSOD's intial dvd release had dubtitles on the Japanese Version. So replacement copies had to be shipped out. Furthermore, the defected First shipment Copies WERE NOT RECALLED. They also removed the song "To Believe in Something"

Im grateful for the dub because it introduce me to yu-gi-oh, but once i watched in japanese i could not believe how awful it was, in the original version the voices are better, the soundtrack is better, the songs are better, there is no censorship and you don't get a changed dialogue that butchers the characters like so many dubs (dragon ball for example). When is about yu-gi-oh ONLY go for the sub, i recommend the tag force games (psp) if you like the card game .
Yea, Slifer is just another change that was made in the English version. The real name of Slifer is Osiris, and Slifer was the name of the executive producer at the time. Personally, I wish they had kept it as Osiris.
Actually, there are a number of scenes in the JP anime that were censored from the original manga. Every version of the original series (except maybe the English manga, I haven't compared it with the JP manga) has had some form of censorship. Going back to the Burger World scene, in the original manga the Pharaoh set a man on fire. In the Toei version of the same scene, the fire is an illusion. For another example, the Pharaoh is pretty damn bloodthirsty in the early manga (it got toned down later). Season 0 kept a lot of that, but toned it down a lot. NAS YGO toned it down even further (even though the manga already toned down the Pharaoh's bloodlust in the Duelist Kingdom arc), and then 4kids tried to expunge even more of it.

Besides being a co-producer for the first season of YuGiOh, he was very much involved with both MARVEL and DC in various positions. And his crowning achievement was the creation of the the alien mercenary/bounty hunter Lobo (DC comics). And yes, your choice of the anniversary version of Blue Eyes is VERY COOL.
Well she beats Joey in the first episode, as well as Mai and Crump later on :P In the Japanese version she's actually portrayed much more competent too, whereas in the West, 4Kids added loads of lines that made it seem like she doesn't know what she's doing.
Censored Gaming Perhaps I should clarify. Nobody in Yu-Gi-Oh! is a decent deulist in my opinion. It's all just written in a way to make it seem like some people are better than others when in reality, they're all at about the same level. Heck with the amount of times they break the rules (both in-universe rules and out) they may not even be at a beginner level. XD It doesn't help that the dub made changes.

It's not about whether they're vulnerable or not. Kids tend to mimic what they see on tv and still can't completely tell right from wrong. They might think it's fun to try that out to a fellow classmate (and they often do, sexual harassment nowadays starts as early as elementary school). It's best if they're not exposed to things they can't fully understand yet.

In fact, Sony has closed down all of its japanese studios in favor of opening american studios, which means Sony is more american than japanese at this point. 😂 though to be honest, all text is removed wether it's English or not because at some point they will want to remove some words, so for the sake of not leaving some parts of the anime with text and others without text, they remove everything to keep it even. Same might go for the soundtrack. They'd rather remove the entire music and replace all of it than to leave the anime sounding weird with a mix of American and japanese music. There's a handful of Japanese music themes that were too "dramatically heavy" for the American version, and replacing only some of those with modern american music would make it all uneven. That, and additional money might have to be payed to the japanese creators to licence the music, we all know music isn't cheap, but dubbing companies might be cheap.

When I was a kid, that date episode definitely confused me. It was pretty obvious that everything they did were things you would do on a date. What didn't make sense was how any of that was supposed to help awaken the memory of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. Glad to finally know what was up.

A lot of people don't know this, but FUNimation bought the Yugioh rights from 4kids and redid the first couple episodes with even the original actors to be much more faithful to the original version and removed the visual censorship, no obnoxiously loud music, and original Japanese cards. They wanted to do the whole series but it wasn't getting enough money. In it you can see Tea and Tristan do the bathroom scene right.

Honestly I’m kinda glad in a way they focused more on the “What is Pharaoh’s backstory” the most. The only thing I even liked about that episode was when Tea suggested to go to the museum where we did get a bit of pharaohs backstory.

They made him want to see her belly button instead of her panties, not to mention a lot of scenes with him originally were removed until many years later. In other words Goku would get it just as bad if 4kids were in change.
Which he did when 4Kids was allowed to air Dragonball Z Kai on CW4Kids. Not only did they remove the blood and other kid-unfriendly content, but they also made other retarded changes (like turning Mr. Popo blue and changing the halos the orbs).

You seem to think 4kids chose to make all those edits for Yugioh? They were just following orders the entire time, which is why the excessive censorship in Yugioh continued long after they were bought by Konami. If you've seen the trading card edits you'll know that it was all Konami's doing. If you've seen the Pokemon anime you'll notice it was allowed to get away with so much more in the English Dub. Squirtle Squad (Episode 12) had everyone in a store pull a gun on Ash kept intact in English.
4kids actually dubbed the Porygon Episode, however wasn't allowed to release it because of the world wide ban. Nintendo wasn't ordering 4kids to censor the series any further than FCC requirements. If Konami tried pulling their crap these days with Yugioh on the Pokemon Anime, I don't think Brock would have his running gag. Not all 4kids series got equal levels of censorship, with Yugioh getting the most absurd amounts of it even though it was unnecessary. Then series like Viva Pinata & Pokemon got almost no censorship overall in comparison.

That's rather rude talking about the voice actresses like that. And they had sexual themes in the original because YuGiOh was meant for a teen/older audience. I can't stand the dub because it changed many of the character's personalities and goals, as well as plot. I understand your opinion on the sexual themes being taken out, but that still doesn't excuse 4Kids getting rid of many other things.
I actually like the dub version of where Mai talks to Joey. Helps show off Joey's bashfulness when being complemented by a girl and Mai's sarcasm when she adds "and a cute apron" as well as their developing friendship (and gives the shippers some ammo).

I adore the voice actors and music of the english dub (I love the original music as well, both are great in their own way), but can easily agree that most of the changes 4kids made were so, so bad. It's such a shame cause the voice actors are super talented and deserve better.

Her friendship speeches were annoying... I was happy what Little Kuriboh did to them! Made me laugh and feel glad I didn't have to hear them.
She absolutely drops friendship speeches all the time in the sub, she is downright obsessed with it haha. Now granted I haven’t watched the dub in many years so it’s somehow possible she talks about friendship even more in the dub? But honestly I doubt there’s much difference, it’s a part of her character in both versions.

While I agree that a lot of these changes were ridiculous, to be fair putting it on Saturday morning cartoons in the first place was a stretch. Certain arcs like Duelist Kingdom only had typical edits (dialogue, guns, body parts, etc,) but others like the Battle City arc required heavy editing due to all the OBVIOUS death references (it was pretty plain obvious to me even as a kid that those were not "magical discs that would send you to the shadow realm.") Furthermore, the series as a whole was rushed because they were trying to make it the next success like Pokemon was. Dark Side of Dimensions was done much more smoothly as there were no edits and the only thing I feel it lacks (save the occasional SDA from a character, which surprisingly there were very few of) is that they changed the music (which even then, it was watchable; I have heard MUCH worse dub-made soundtracks.)
As for the edits to Tea's character in specific, I wasn't surprised about most of them because at the time the show came out, it was considered the norm to edit anime because it was automatically labeled as a children's cartoon and most of these edits were ones found in other popular anime at the time such as Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, and Pokemon. I was, however, confused about the removal of her jealousy towards Yugi, especially considering they were fine with Rebecca and Vivian having crushes on him. While the relationship wasn't entirely removed and the little scene may have been removed for time (the US has a lot more commercials than Japan after all,) Tea actually IS Yugi's age. Vivian is older than Yugi (about Mai's age to be precise) and Rebecca is younger than Yugi (10 in the Japanese, 8 in the American) so this baffles me. I get that the show's main focus isn't relationships, but still I'm confused. LOL
With that being said, I still have fond memories of it and adore the voice actors, though I feel there are other series that show them at their best. Slayers was a direct-to-DVD series that most of the Yu-Gi-Oh cast worked on and Viva Pinata was actually a pretty funny prelay show where they just got to be themselves without having to match lip flap.

Funimation tried to but they didn't know that 4kids was doing it behind T.V Tokyo's back so that's why we don't have a re-dub. Its likely that we won't get one because Konami owns 4K Media (Neo 4kids basically) and refuses to. DSOD is the most accurate translation of YGO we're going to get.
YumeShiinaide and DSOD's intial dvd release had dubtitles on the Japanese Version. So replacement copies had to be shipped out. Furthermore, the defected First shipment Copies WERE NOT RECALLED.

There were the DVDs they released that contained the unedited Japanese versions, but they stopped after about three discs because they were competing with their televised re-edits.

Im grateful for the dub because it introduce me to yu-gi-oh, but once i watched in japanese i could not believe how awful it was, in the original version the voices are better, the soundtrack is better, the songs are better, there is no censorship and you don't get a changed dialogue that butchers the characters like so many dubs (dragon ball for example).
When is about yu-gi-oh ONLY go for the sub, i recommend the tag force games (psp) if you like the card game .

Yea, Slifer is just another change that was made in the English version. The real name of Slifer is Osiris, and Slifer was the name of the executive producer at the time. Personally, I wish they had kept it as Osiris.
Actually, there are a number of scenes in the JP anime that were censored from the original manga. Every version of the original series (except maybe the English manga, I haven't compared it with the JP manga) has had some form of censorship. Going back to the Burger World scene, in the original manga the Pharaoh set a man on fire. In the Toei version of the same scene, the fire is an illusion. For another example, the Pharaoh is pretty damn bloodthirsty in the early manga (it got toned down later). Season 0 kept a lot of that, but toned it down a lot. NAS YGO toned it down even further (even though the manga already toned down the Pharaoh's bloodlust in the Duelist Kingdom arc), and then 4kids tried to expunge even more of it.
1 Yeah i read the manga and like most of it, season 0 has that 90's charm but its a monster of the week type of story and it was even more silly than the rest of DM.

slifer875....although I prefer "Sky Dragon of Osiris" over Slifer, I agreed it's a cool name. And you do honor to the late Roger Slifer (RIP). Besides being a co-producer for the first season of YuGiOh, he was very much involved with both MARVEL and DC in various positions. And his crowning achievement was the creation of the the alien mercenary/bounty hunter Lobo (DC comics).
And yes, your choice of the anniversary version of Blue Eyes is VERY COOL.

In the Japanese version she's actually portrayed much more competent too, whereas in the West, 4Kids added loads of lines that made it seem like she doesn't know what she's doing.
Censored Gaming Perhaps I should clarify. Nobody in Yu-Gi-Oh! is a decent deulist in my opinion. It's all just written in a way to make it seem like some people are better than others when in reality, they're all at about the same level. Heck with the amount of times they break the rules (both in-universe rules and out) they may not even be at a beginner level. XD It doesn't help that the dub made changes.

It's not bout what's more impactful, I just don't think eight or ten year olds are mature enough to be learning about issues like rape, especially not from an anime.

It's not about whether they're vulnerable or not. Kids tend to mimic what they see on tv and still can't completely tell right from wrong. They might think it's fun to try that out to a fellow classmate (and they often do, sexual harassment nowadays starts as early as elementary school). It's best if they're not exposed to things they can't fully understand yet.
+DreamOfTheRebel personally I prefer a more active parenting role. My children watch what they want, but we talk about it together. I try to treat everything as a possible learning opportunity- either academically, socially or morally.

The irony is the censorship makes us seem prudish and conservative, but in reality in my experience a lot of Japanese and Korean people think that it's the opposite, with then being conservative and us being libral.
