  • Follow Pheidias, the chief builder for the Parthenon, as he supervises the construction of the new temple and faces charges of embezzlement.
    --
The year is 432 BCE. As dawn breaks over Athens, Pheidias is already late for work. He is the chief builder for the Parthenon - Athens’ newest and largest temple- and when he arrives onsite, city officials accuse him of embezzling gold from the temple’s sacred central statue. He has until sundown to prove his innocence or face the courts. Mark Robinson outlines a day in the life of a Greek architect.
Lesson by Mark Robinson, directed by Hana Tintor & Laura Martinović.

@Question Everything - Thought Provoking Ideas, please question and provide the source of the quote at least. This is horrifyingly simplistic, considering the context of the quotation. No quote directly translated from ancient Greek would have sounded like this. Actual quotation is: "Laws are made to instruct the good, and in the hope that there may be no need of them; also to control the bad, whose hardness of heart will not be hindered from crime." Plato, Laws book 9, 880d-e, trans. Benjamin Jowett. This is even a bad translation, the better ones are by Thomas Pangle. And Phidias is not a kind of person Plato especially admired, nor one famous for lawfulness, considering his low opinion about art and artists in the "Republic." The construction of the Acropolis and Parthenon is heavily criticized in Plato's "Gorgias," not as a pointless aesthetic expense, but a sign of moral corruption.

And it's been 24 centuries since, as the world still enjoys Phidias' work, critics and politicians are still delaying the work of architects and engineers around the world. Thankfully in this case, the artist prevailed over the noise makers.

great video! just one word though: if i remember well, the parthenon is not a temple, it's more of what we would call a treasury (like the siphnian treasury), ie a gigantic offering, which hosts other smaller offerings (the main one here being the athena parthenos).
also people wouldn't have made libations nor sacrifices in temples: altars were outside, in front of temples, as the goal was for the blood to run down to the ground and the smoke up to the sky and gods. :)

It seems that the role of an architect has changed since then. Nowadays architects focus on the esthetics only while in ancient times they were also engineers and construction managers.

You guys need to make more architectural videos.
There is so much to take on.
    History vs. Le Corbusier
    The Bauhaus movement
Jane Jacobs and her book "Death and life of great Americans cities" and how it saved and revolutionised urban planning.
So many great architects, urban planners, engineers and styles through out the ages.
