Started the poppies from seeds, out doors, early Spring (April).
Why did I grow the poppies? To re-leave pain and for insomnia.
But a quick search on these beauties and you will learn that they are so much more then just a beautiful flower.

I collected seeds from a random poppy growing on the side of the road in an industrial park about 13 years ago. These things grow literally everywhere here. Now I have a full carpet in my front yard all from one little lonely flower. They’re incredibly aggressive in there natural climate if given posh treatment not seen in the wild.
It must be beautiful.
I love that here in Portland Oregon they grow everywhere like weeds. I think they’re beautiful and I wish they weren’t so fussy about being picked and put in a vase. ( the petals usually fall off within a few hours after bringing them inside no matter what I do.) Lol. 😀
I've read that picking them when they're buds/almost opening are best if wanting to put them in a vase.
just grow them in soil
I grew white California poppies from seed which was required to plant before the last date of frost which I found unusual. I have been rewarded with gorgeous white flowers with yellow centers which are still blooming heavily in the Chicago area as we begin the month of August. This is a lovely and tough little flower. Happy poppy tea drinking!
Some plants require the cold first to help germinate. You can trick seeds anytime by putting them in your fridge for a week or two depending on the seed
Thank you for sharing your experience, very helpful
Tom from Belfast Northern Ireland here.
We started seeing california poppies in our gardens and on our Belfast roadsides about 10 years ago. Before that they were not here at all. They are very welcome 'invader'. I allow them to grow in my two gardens as a wild flower.
that is wonderful
Thanks muchly zaneymay. Check out my very amateur channel under

I feel so stupid I just realized the weed that looks like cilantro outside is poppy seedlings and now I know not to yank them out
😂
This was extremely helpful. Thank you!
would love to see your tea making video of all your dried flowers :) awesome video

Thank you
@@zaneymay Awesome will have a look :)
April 2020, waiting for my poppies to germinate. I may have started late since it’s already April. Ive falling in love with these poppies long, long ago and wish I can successfully grow them but not much luck yet. It’s must be their bright eye catching color and tall stems that catches my heart. I wish nursery garden carry them (already grown) instead of selling seed packages. Every year I’ll just observe their beauties from road side or passing by community neighborhoods with landscape filled with poppies. Thanks for sharing your garden experiences with this beautiful flowers. I can’t believe a Californian such as myself haven’t had much luck with growing state flowers. What day did you plant them since they were bushy by May and bloom in June? I hope I’m not too late.
That was when I lived in zone 5a it was early April. I now live in zone 8b and toss my seeds around December/January. And they have been blooming for a while now.
Beautiful!
I really like this show, just a tip for you, put your seed pods in an empty oatmeal can or paper bag and let them open inside, lots of times you can hear them pop open
Cool thanks.
I have never seen this head style of poppy seeds before 🤔 Usually the heads are circles, not thin and long.
There are probably over a 100 different kinds of poppies.
Just put seed pods in a paper bag and let them dry out and they'll start popping, hence, the name Poppy!
wow the stalk

What is the purpose of dehydrating the petals and leaves? Does that have anything to do with extracting the seeds or do the pods form and dry on their own?
It was used in teas and tinctures.
The pods form and the seeds will dry on the plant. Then shake the seeds out.
@@zaneymay Thank you for the tips and the quick reply. What are the teas and tinctures used for?
+Dylan Wasserman I used it to relieve pain and insomnia. But it has lots of other uses.
@@zaneymay awesome! I'll try to harvest some
I just bought some but friend said to late to plant 🌱. I live in San Diego. How do I save them tell next year? When do I plant. Thank you 😊
Not sure about the best way to save them, I save my seeds in the freezer. You would want to plant the seeds when it is cool outside. Right before it starts to warm up.
What is the purpose of cutting up and dehydrating the greens?
To be used in teas (infusion) and tinctures.
Can you explain why you dehydrated them?
To use in teas and tinctures.
I live in North Carolina when e the time to harvest? I got some seeds last year when I went to see my daughter 😊
Harvest before they die down, if you are harvesting the roots.
Which month seedling
I started the seeds outdoors in April, zone 5a.
Do you know how long it takes for the seed pods to be ready after blooming?
The bloom is only a few days then the pods began to form. When the pads are dry and a tan color they will start to open and release the seeds.
I wait to collect the seed pods when they get pretty big, kinda like a green bean, per se. You can then pick them as they start to turn tan or brownish on the plant. Once I pick them I place them in a closed paper bag..not plastic! In time, they will dry on their own and will be expelled from their pod. Make sure you keep the paper bag closed at the top or you will have poppy seeds popping out just like popcorn! Storing in plastic will cause the seeds to mold.
wouldntthe seeds be in the center
ooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
How often have to put water???
Only when needed. About an inch when needed.
@@danpixel i said as needed. I've had to water them in 5a and 8b zones.
I used to live in both Los Angeles and San Francisco and you will see these growing just about everywhere one hikes and its pretty dry. Now I live in Seattle which is the complete opposite and they flourish everywhere like cracks in alleys, entire hilled front yards, you name it. They are basically a weed that is very attractive and useful and they are about as hardy as a dandelion. Treat them like you would a succulent in your garden or maybe an aloe plant in the house and its hard to go wrong.
I have to water these suckers 4 times a day if they go 7 hours without watering they wither for me
how do you use it for pain etc?
you can dry it and use in is a tea, or make a tinctures with the plant material.
zaneymay ...Arent those the wrong type of poppies to be using for pain & insomnia????? I think you should be growing “Papaver Somniferum” poppies instead!!!!!!🧐🤨😎
Why's my poppies floppy?
Oh my, I don't know.
Is your name Kelly you sound just like someone i know
Nope
@@zaneymay cheers happy farming!
