I have really gotten into this hobby. Not sure why, but I have always liked vintage vacuums

Oh man my grandma had one of these exactly like this. I think even the scuff marks look the same! The only reason I know this isn't hers is because her outer bag had a huge bite mark from the dog chewing through it. That thing absolutely hated the vacuum. But this model is 100% identical to the one she always had in the closet. Still used it up till around when she died. She wouldn't replace something if it absolutely did not need replacing. Seeing that and the memories are flooding back. I can smell this video.

You are extremely lucky to have found that, where i live you cannot ever find these types of units.

Keep the videos coming, I find the most enjoyable part of your channel is seeing how beat up and dirty these vacuums are during disassembly

My aunt had the mint green version for many years, it was a wedding gift for her. We grew up using that machine all the time, what a throwback lol, loved that vacuum!

Just bought a mint green Decade 80 with the power surge and air freshener at the top of the bag. 25 bucks at local thrift store. it is in excellent condition but when i ran it the first time, it stunk very much like dirty feet! so i sat down and watched your very informative video and followed you step by step. after a soak in Dawn dish soap and little bit of bleach, the gunked up dirt tube was good as new. i cleaned out the roller bearings and as you say, they were a super mess and used sewing machine oil as that and WD40 were all i had on hand, but the bearings were bright and clean and rolling smoothly. my roller brush is in terrific condition otherwise and she rolls along like a bike. i did not take the fan off or apart, but did take that big bolt off and cleaned all the wound up thread and hair that was under it and oiled it. i purchased miniature bulbs at a local store as that was all i could find to replace my burned out bulbs - they are bright!!! i was very happy with how everything turned out and no stinky vacuum!! it works like a charm and i could not have done the cleaning job without this video. thank you!!! i want to find another one and work on it too! this was fun! by the way, i am soon to be sixty years old and have never taken a machine apart and put it back together!!

I went into a thrift Store and found one of these also and bought it for 30$ and i asked my friend at Omaha Vacuums and he said he recommends it over what i have now (one of the new Shark Vacuums) and brought it home and he explained how to repair it with the parts that came with it and i was shocked how easy it was. plus i tried it out and it is way better than what you get nowadays. i Totally Recommend Omaha Vacuums if your in the Omaha, NE area they have parts for lots of stuff and do Central VAC installs too!

I can't wait for a retrospective review on that vacuum. I love how the Decade style Convertibles look with their unique headlight (especially the beam pattern). I own a Decade 800 u4503-900, and I do like using it over my Supremacy (Ranger hood style) U4719-900 and my Convertible U4349, simply for its longer cord and 4 strip brush roll (which I'm not too sure if it's a replacement or not).

But one question, what LED lights did you use for this? I might want to find some for my other vacuums.

That's a fine U4385 that you made finer with your clean & lube. The Power Surges were the second iteration of Decade 80s; manufactured between 1984 & 1988. Hoover USA didn't include the 2-digit year & 2-digit week in its serial numbers until 1988. My Convertible U4409 has the same bag design and colors.

I used to have this machine years ago. My main complaint with it was that it broke belts too often; even if adjusted correctly. Other than that, it was a pretty good deep cleaner.

I have a Decade 800 and want to give it some needed attention. Found mine at a Thrift Store too in fall of 2009 for about $20 with the pan converter and a random attachment or two.

Thanks man. Now I do clock repair and use mink oil. How would that work on these motors. I also have 3 in one and singer oil on the bench.

one of the best rug suckers ever made !
that bag reminds me of static on an old tube tv
31:27 i think the fan is out of round and might be rubbing . or something to do with the roller
should have bought that hoover carpet cleaner for a couple videos~
and you would definitely get views with that eureka precision .
and hell i like the bissell cleanview and eureka maxima.

Awesome video! I have this exact same color! Mine has Power Surge and my handle is a chrome. I wonder if they had different models with “power surge” as a main selling point. I’ve seen some with air fresheners on the top of the bag. Mine doesn’t have that feature. I got mine for $75. I really want to get the tool attachments. It’s a really awesome machine and pretty powerful. Only thing is one of my headlights is out.

That's awesome! I have two of them myself one with the power surge and one with the tool surge. Pics on Instagram of them. I put LEDs in one ,they don't fit as easy so get a low profile bulb if you go that way. More on the v-log channel.
