Fred, with his superficial observations about music, seems awfully taken with himself. To quote the great Donald Fagen, regarding Fred's ignorant parodies of jazz, "fuck that motherfucker."
I believe you (not that need validation) because I could see a young Fred catching a live Bow Wow Wow show. what year do you think that was? good luck…my high school days were exactly high school days.
what a BadAss opening act. this act is exactly what Fred & Carrie would riff about with each other & it became a show. the way Fred analyzes guitarists & drummers here is how he & Carrie break down Portland’s many scenes…and it’s Hilarious, both the show & Portland IRL.
The first time Slint played in Chicago, the first time I saw them play, was at Club Dreamers in March 1989. The first song they played was a cover version of Rise Above, Black Flag. It's quite possible, even likely, Fred was there that night. I knew Fred when he was a door guy at Lounge Ax and he was the drummer in Trench Mouth.
Just FYI, when he's doing Norwegian strumming he's actually also singing in Norwegian.. Also, his impression of Norwegian folk guitarists showing off the chords they play was unbelievably spot on. Never noticed before, but once he did it, tons of Norwegian guitarists just flashed before my eyes doing that exact thing, although less exaggerated of course. Fantastic show.
I am actually impressed how little fred cares that he has to squeeze through the amps and cabinets and switch between the drum seat and the front mic all the time.
@@abcdefghijkl5408 eh, I think you two are saying the same thing. fred doesn't feel the need to go for actual punchlines more than half the time, just an amusing specific observation can be often enough for him and his audience. i enjoy the routine he does here, as it's concise. his "stand up for drummers" was pretty unfunny due to filler overload.
I saw the same show the other day at the largo and it was phenomenal unfortunately it was the first set so it was the funniest but I can't get enough of Fred
I like that he generalized it enough so it's funny for non-musicians and or/drummers..He's the best, the odd time signatures bit using Slint(perfect), imitating Discord-era bands, the musician walk..
I think being cultured and weird helped him understand the mechanics of what it is to be mainstream better, thus, he knows what to do to fit in that crowd
I was at the opening of the NYC 5th Ave Apple store when Fred met Steve Jobs. When I told him i'm a musician he signed his autograph for me on a piece of staff paper.
The Zildjjian factory is actually in Norwell, MA. I only know that because that's where I'm from. I don't think they have had a factory in turkey since the 70's 😂
I think he's funny doing comedy...this feels awkward because he's not really a good musician even though he thinks he is. It's like, "Hey, I'm Fred Armisen. You might know me from SNL, but I also can sort of play guitar and drums, I know a dab of music theory, and I really impress myself at home."
As someone that started out as a jazz musician, was a pop and rock producer for major labels for 20 years and now teaches music theory at a conservatory, I think he might be more spot on than you realise. He might have improved it by using an Am7 instead of an Em to illustrate a self-important long night. Guitar players using Am7 in the 0 position are the the Hitlers of the music world. Just something profound you fully understand after 30 years around studios and touring.
It works for the jokes. Funny virtuosity gets pretty old for me. Louis Cole is the exception though because he's just so ridiculous. That being said, if an actual jazz drummer got up there the jokes would only be for drummers. These are for anyone that knows a musician. I mean, the secret to writing naturally in odd meter is to learn to dance to it, but that kinda ruins his joke. It's a funny joke that's true for anyone that ever tried to dance at a Tool show.
thinline tele with a strat headstock.....i think Fred is like 60% total bullshit haha he's an ok musician but can he play a whole song ? same with his accents bit. kinda bs. all delivery. not factual haha but funny none the less.
Hipsters are music fans with imaginary rules that cut them off from large swatches of music. They're the alt rock equivalent of blues dads that say BB King was the greatest because that gives them an excuse to play one note (poorly). Every odd time noise rock band is following in King Crimsons wake (of Poseidon), and an honest KC fan will tell you it's music for a specific mood. Hipsters also get real pissy when you bring up people like Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston because deep down they know how great they were, but their persona is built on worshipping bands you've never heard of.
Fred's comedy is so wonderfully niche and he really doesn't try to dumb things down. So great
I went to high school with Fred,I'd say he turned out pretty awesome

He really opened with a slint reference what a legend
The concert 5/4 timing joke hits really close to home 🤣 love it
The world needs more Fred.
As italian I am impressed about the accuracy of his jokes. We truly have an history of rockers who are exactly the way he describes them.
The D chord thing is too good
Fred Armisen awkwardly dancing to Spiderland is exactly the kind of niche humor I'm here for

I could watch this, ALL. DAY.
This performance is awesome!! If I was in the audience I would be dying laughing

As a lifelong musician, I can say that you just get used to it
Part of the effect
Fred is not laugh greedy. He just takes a few and goes home.
There aren't many to take, so he can't be too picky

love how much he's fleshed this stuff out
OMG, the Kansas-part is the funniest sh*t I've seen in a long time!!
Fred Armisen is no less than underrated- I have no clue about any instruments, but I laughed my ass off
This man is a true geographer!
This was so genius I’ve had to keep watching it over and over. This whole performance was nothing less than incredible.
Right?!
That Americans not hitting notes bit is accidentally a Pavement song
The 'Australian singer voice' was obviously Peter Garrett from Midnight Oil, and a very good impression of him too.

Brilliant - I'm a musician (Australian) and you got it absolutely spot on.
Sounded like Oilz
How musicians walk cracked me up . Next time he comes to my city I have to see him
really hope Yo La Tengo opened the show with that long E-Minor lmao
his drums sound so damn good
The last bit about Diana Ross is the icing on the cake. Mannerisms are what make people unique.
These impressions are terrifyingly accurate.
Thanks for the upload this was great!
Brilliant stuff
I really enjoyed this
Fred A is a GOD AMONG US Humans!
I can confirm none of my songs in E minor are short, and the D chord is usually embellished with the 2 extra augmentations.
Fred is so good Ira and Georgia are watching from side stage.
He actually sing a very famous Norwegian song. Totally nail every style
That Kansas bit was great.
Absolutely hilarious! Fantastic~~~@@~~~
Sometimes I wonder how Fred got on SNL ... he was very funny, but he is so unique and cultured and weird... not mainstream
I think being cultured and weird helped him understand the mechanics of what it is to be mainstream better, thus, he knows what to do to fit in that crowd
I would by a 45 import copy of “Don’t Go In the Ambulance”
HAHAHA ME TOO LOL
I want one of those too, but what I'm most dying for is his Fugazi album. "Oom bap moop bap to dap bow" all sounding like a muppet is killin me.

"In Italy, on *paper* it's correct..." 😂
Any time I'm playing acoustic guitar and come to the D chord, no way I'm not throwing in some G and maybe some open E!
12:32 whole kansas segment is awesome
YER MOM AND DAD WERE THE BEST YOU EVER HAD gets me every time lmao
i can't not do the D chord sussing, I love playing History by Tenacious D and it's just too fun to play around with 😭
Kansas bit is my favourite
Fred established niche comedy for music nerds as a genre.
Tell those Italians “just relax!” 🙃

Quanti fagioli ci sono nel bicchiere ?
If you don't already know & want to see where else Fred says this, put snl Vinny Vedecci in your UA-cam search! 🤌😂
the slint bit is still the funniest shit ever
