3:57 Oh my God! He nails that off kilter Hüsker Dü rhythm PERFECTLY out of nowhere! I've never heard anyone play that before besides Grant Hart, its so distinctive
@@lewiscarrington1777 True, Superchunk is great too, the drummer actually plays with Bob Mould and nails all of the Husker Du songs. I guess I meant that the style is very distinctively Grant Hart's drumming style.
@@Stank_Dank_ basically he's saying that Fred Armisen is both comedically and musically competent, but recognizing that this is likely a very common reaction to this content, he makes this comment while acknowledging that it would be almost 'obligatory' to say such a thing.
@UnjustifiedRecs I agree. Which got me thinking, I never film portrait mode... Turns out, I was wrong, this was recorded by my son. I was behind him with poor visibility and my right ear next to the speaker stack. With age, so goes memory...or so I hear.
'Crass' ! Good answer. If u know the music of Crass then you'll know how unique their style of drumming is. Penny Rimbaud does alot of like, almost military style drum rudiments, like from a 'marching band' or something which gives their songs a very different and instantly recognisable feel. The rest of their sound is really distinctive aswell, with that very thin but extremely distorted guitar sound. Crass can be quite challenging to listen to at times but if you persevere and find the songs that u like, then it's definitely worth it. Try 'Big A Little A' 'Bloody Revolutions' 'You're Already Dead' 'System' for starters.
Yeah when I think of important 1st wave UK punk my mind goes to Crass. They had a unique sound on the “Feeding”. Much prefer then over the Pistols and even the Clash.
@rrar rarr NA Palmer refused to learn a single chord in all the years he played Crass guitar. Kevin Coyne is another singer songwriter that did not let his lack of guitar knowhow get in the way of a song.
1:55 he’s referencing the Fugazi tune “Latin Roots,” totally hilarious. That record came out in ‘91, love Steady Diet of Nothing, a very stripped down and aggressive record.
Also, the first 4 songs in this UA-cam playlist has Fred playing drums with Tommy Stinson, Moby and Tony Kanal: ua-cam.com/play/PL1wJP0k4yxPafytub7EisE9XCHO_v0ELW.html
(3:13) Crass drumming isnt too difficult. It"s all on a snare drum. Their drum roadie/tech had the easiest job ever. Carry a drum key, a few extra drum heads, those snare things, a couple of sticks... that's it.
CrAss drumming is a lot of snare rolls, marching band syle. He also got the Gang of Four beat completely wrong. Would have been nice to hear a UK82 d-beat.
Yeah, I couldn't tell if he was trying to play Go4 and failing or trying to play Wire and failing lol. Gang of Four drums are deceptively idiosyncratic. They're typically pretty basic rock beats, but with that heavy emphasis on the 1 from funk.
would anyone else love love love to see a 2 person show of Fred and Carrie doing this kinda thing? together. riffing off each other and crowd work? i'd pay for that in a heartbeat.
The set is great, but i was also watching the girl with the hat in the back to see what she liked. She didn’t laugh at much, but once she pulled her phone out for an ig story i stopped checking on her
GMaj joke is so good. I've always disliked that chord on guitar and the only person I ever really enjoyed who used it a lot was Daniel Johnston cause his singing itself was out of tune. RIP to a pioneer
1:57 spot on Fugazi impression
D chord thing is so true. Can’t watch him without thinking of ‘Devon, whatareyoudoinghere?’ A gifted actor and musician.
Take a right on the 405.....
Yes. I always play that d sus chord so it sounds like I’m a much better guitar 🎸 player. Great music history observations!
3:57 Oh my God! He nails that off kilter Hüsker Dü rhythm PERFECTLY out of nowhere! I've never heard anyone play that before besides Grant Hart, its so distinctive

how do these drums sound SO good even thru this phone mic
I'm wondering the exact same. That snare sounds better than St Anger
it's called a PA system.
@@thedangersofoxygen135 Dropping a brick on a cat sounds better than the snare on St. Anger.
Fred Armisen is one of my favorite people on the entire planet.
It's really great to watch this bit with a crowd that gets the references as opposed to Jimmy Fallon pretending he gets them.
Watching Jimmy Fallon is a form of masochism for people who actually hate themselves. :)
Freds ian mackaye impression is on point😂
"Did I skip anyone important?"
Yeah man, Ian Rubbish and the Bizzaros.

i fucking LOVE how he goes quiet and none is talking
love him doing that bit he used to do with kristen wiig on snl with the crowd that was sweet. this is a great music nerd set, its so fun.
Thank you for sharing this treasure that I got to watch! This is amoung the very, very best videos I've discovered on youtube.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ray's guitar broke. I guess I'll tell you all about the last time I was in Portland
That’s a true story just ask Bruce Loose
What about Descendents, Fred? I’m hurt, sir.
Early Keith Black Flag!
That’s actually what I was thinking too haha
"How important was crass?" ...
Spoken like a true american
(3:05) How about Discharge? That's an easy one-snare and crash cymbal on EVERY beat.
It's called d beat
The fugazi impression is sooo spot on
I laughed so hard with that one
As an adult with ADHD, I absolutely looooooove this, but can you do this genre/band next…..🤣🙏
As another adult with ADHD, I want this to never end
Is there a box set of this?
This is innovative. Obviously aimed at rock nerds but it's probably fun for everyone. I lol'ed at the Blackbird performance. Nice, Freddy.
Quite the music lesson
"How important is Crass on the punk rock scene?"
30 seconds earlier: "So when I think modern punk I think tame Impala"
exactly
Had no idea he was a drummer but he's always been as funny as hell
He was the drummer for a Devo reunion show in Oakland the summer before

All Fuckin hail Penny Rimbaud
Who is the camera man ? Stay still !!!!!
I knew in from our art school dorm in the YMCA Sloane House. He was an over eager pain in the ass. Not a jerk, just annoying.
If anyone here witnesses this live, please yell out "Old Skull" for missed bands.
😂yes the little kids💪
Max Power!/ Portland. Peirce taught me everything I know
Brilliant drummer wow.. but to not mention Penny Rimbaud when the guy said Crass is just wrong there's something missing there.
Crass is important as fuck though..
Awesome dude
He almost had it there on Blackbird! Lol
That is how his dad played it for him
He was doing the jazz version. Callback
Ramones...Pistols ?
Very pleased he added BAD BRAINS !
