I'm wondering: Why was the Dalai Lama, being a Buddhist monk, living in a palace?

His Holiness The Dalai Lama was both the political head and spiritual leader of Tibet. He later retired from the political leadership and established a democratic system where people can elect the political seat holder. The Potala Palace was built from the era of the 5th Dalai Lama and renovated by the trusted minister of the fifth Dalai Lama. From then, the Potala Palace is a large establishment with lots of features like holy shrines, offices of the govt body, printing press, grounds, monastic institution, libraries and etc. The Potala Palace holds 1000 rooms in total.

Its because the Potala Palace even though is called a "palace" was actually a monastery accompanied by offices of the Tibetan government... Think of it like the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican...
