What a terrific achievement, you've done a super job there. I've been planning a lap steel build but it's only in it's infancy, your video will provide the inspiration to get me started!
Good grief Joel!! This is fantastic! Your great, great grandfather would be proud…and so would Fritz that you could make such use of his tools….Now play something!
Thats a great result Joel. Sounds fantastic! I've just finished my 8 string version and making 2 more the same for family. Its a lot of work and as I'm 76 now, I don't think there will be anymore made by me. Well done. Regards, Chris. Australia.🙂
That’s a fantastic job, you must be well pleased with the results. I’ve got to finish off my double neck bass and 6 string guitar first but a lap steel is my next project! Great old tip with the pin on the pillar drill 👌🏼
Awesome. I have a big slab of mahogany that was a fireplace mantel that I've been intending to turn into a guitar and this is the build type I've been looking for 👍
Hi, that is an amazing job. I'm doing the same thing, or at least starting to. Where did you get the side on image? What thickness did the headstock come out as? Would you mind sharing some of these details? Many thanks from the UK
Thanks it was a lot of work but I always go back to this lap over everyone I try. I found the side view searching online can't remember. the headstock is 9/16" the challenge is what are you going to do for the fender logo headstock plate? that becomes the nut. theses are very hard to find I lucked out and got that and the pickup cover from a 1952 fender on eBay. you could make a copy if you have the metal skills.
Do you make your metal hardware or purchase it. That's my big question. I build acoustic and electric n repair for many years but the metal hardware is what I'm looking for. The large pickup cover
The fender head plate and pickup cover are from two original lap steels but I made the bridge myself. these would have to be custom made as they are hard to find- I lucked out. good luck
Thank you Steven! there's just a small clip at the end but I will be making a vid with more sound samples. I love this pickup its from Lollar. Check out my bridge making video that also has some sounds at the end
How did you get a full size template I’m going to build one and wow the parts are going to be a changle to find I seen Chloe you made the bridge and im trying to follow you video
I had to make a full size mechanical it took 28 hours and I got measurements from many people who had an original. I'm going to sell the plans for 30. yeah the bridge was not easy as I need worked with metal before.
@@louie49424 Yes I'm selling the mechanical drawing copy with the details. I acsohace extra metal that I made the bridge to of I can sell you if you are interested. can you friend me on fb we can go from there. thanks
Hey thank you! so the fretboard was done over seas it was a nightmare but I got it done, but they will not make anymore it was a rare situation. The Fender plate-logo is from a 1951 I found on eBay- very hard to find and you need this because its the nut also. the metal pickup cover is from a 1952 I also found on eBay but again very hard to find. I was lucky! Cheers
I used stew Macs dye it was called straw I highly recommend their dyes. I mixed mineral spirits with poly I did very thin layers not to get too thick about 20 layers.
Sir, you are a true craftsman! I have ADHD and can only wish I had your patience. What a beautiful result . You've created a family heirloom.
Ohh thank! you its funny at times my mind is a tornado other times I have the focus lol Cheers
Don’t let ADHD be a crutch. I have ADHD too, but I love building instruments and making projects. Just get out there and start working

There's alot left out
I never said this is a step by step complete tutorial. There are plenty of step by step build vids out there-this is not one.
