I wonder if that was a red herring about Dr. Kovic past. And he just set up next seasons big daddy when he said I’m not going with you guys I’m dealing with a threat greater than this. So that tells me season five will be about that threats and more Dr. Kovic.
I do absolutely love whenever Star Trek steps out from the studio and films on location outdoors much like how they did with Book and Tarka on this episode, just as they have done in the movies and on television shows like DS9 and TNG before that.
The TOS fan in me wonders why the crew didn't pop over to the Kelvan's planet and ask for help upgrading Discovery. They must still be around, considering the invite to the Andromeda Galaxy must have arrived and the rest of the Kelvan's must be on their way! And no mention of the barriers effect on Psi- sensitive beings?
This week's episode was fantastic. Goes by too fast. The build up, race against time, plus Tarka's origin tale. Dang wish it was a bit longer. Always awesome coverage with ups and downs too. +Vibes to the entire WhatCulture fam Live long and prosper
I was really excited when Astoria, Oregon (USA) was mentioned. I am an Oregon native and live near Astoria. Oregon has been mentioned a few times in Trek and I get excited every time 😁
@@Seal0626 As has been mentioned in several other comments, it's a reference to Gilligan's Island, an American sitcom from the mid-60s, where a boat with 7 people supposedly on a three-hour tour, encounters a storm and are stranded on a deserted island for 98 episodes. I guess I shouldn't blame non-Americans for not getting this.
No mention that Burnham said there was a planet outside the barrier? "What does god need with a star ship?". Maybe the Ten-C are that species? just an observation.
We're a THOUSAND years into Trek's future, having gone through who knows how many cultural clothing style changes for humans and others, and here we have the Doctor wearing a 20th century SUIT AND TIE, and NOBODY thinks this is just a little odd?! For some reason when he said he had something "more important" to deal with, something in my head SCREAMED "Gary Seven". Is this guy from the same group?
I thought Sean missed the barrier in ST:V until he mentioned the “Great” barrier toward the end. So what’s the difference between the Great Barrier and the Galactic Carrier?
Good morning Sean, I hope you are well this day. I did thing the episode was ok and It has some good parts BUT still just ok. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Say what you will about the President, I do think that she has been able to help keep Burnham in check so that she does not go all Kirk on the situation and dive in all maverick and cavalier like she has done in the past.
The depiction of the galactic barrier isn't just a visualization, it's actually in a way sort of accurate. We know from Voyager 1 and 2 (The sateliites) that the border of the interstellar barrier between our solar system and the rest of the galaxy is sort of a .. bubbly 'foam' with pockets of various ionized and magnetized bits. I would not be surprised if the galaxy's edge functions the same way, with intergalactic space.
Does anyone know, are they showing Discovery season 4 episode 11 next week AND Picard season 2 episode 1? Or do we have another Discovery hiatus for the last three episodes? Also, this show is really rounding into fine form. Why does it always seem to take Star Trek series several seasons to find its Groove?
Where are you based? In some countries DIS and PIC are on different networks (e.g. in the UK, DIS is on Pluto TV, while PIC is on Prime Video), so there will be an overlap.
We've seen in Discovery already that the cloak can make a ship completely (visually) invisible so I'm not sure either why the cloak now doesn't seem as effective.
@@TheBntimmins I thought that too, that it might be viewer (god) view but the latest episode counteracts that. When they entered the barrier and our vision was hampered as much as the characters.
wish the discovery has more practical effects than digital next season, for now on only can see few operations on the brige, the engineer and medical almost gone
Anybody miss Adam Clery on this channel? Although i think Sean does a fantastic job, I just found Adam a bit more my taste in presenting style. They never addressed him suddenly not doing any videos either...
No way they destroy Ni’Var or Earth after the backlash over destroying Vulcan in the Kelvin universe. They may already be trying to Star Trek: Fleet Command the Kelvin universe movies by, if reports are to believed, looking at having Prime Universe characters cross over and appear in the next movie
The issue I had with the episode is The Galactic Barrier didn't even look like the barrier from earlier Star Trek episodes. The Enterprise wouldn't survive this barrier. I was very disappointed in what Discovery did.
I'm surprised that the Gilligan's Island reference didn't make it into Cetacean Observations. (The line "a three hour tour")
Just scrolled down to say the same xD
IN the UK, GI was not at all a big deal and not the cultural touchstone Americans see it as.
I laughed so loud i scared the cat!
@@benjbutton That's what I figured. Heck, I wasn't sure it even aired in the UK.
@@baltmatrix I've only learned about that show watching ALF 🙂
I can't believe you got Jeffrey Combs to host this episode. The makeup's so good, he looks just like Seán.
I want a spacialchronal distortion that mysteriously brings all the Combs characters together.
I’m more impressed with the accent.
You could be Jeffrey Combs. I could be. We all could be. There’s no way to tell.
He must've played Ellie playing Seán recently too!
That's very Interesting Steve... or should I call you...Jeffery Combs!
Sean I always enjoy the videos but your sign offs are so heartfelt and kind, and I appreciate them just as much as the episode reviews!
Did you miss the Gillian’s island reference- three hour tour ? Teaser to discovery being lost again ?
Yes agreed
It will get stuck in the past . To tie it to the short trek calypso
It's also on the dedication plaque quote on the adrift USS Brattain in TNG episode "Night Terrors"
I was going to ask the same thing 🙂
Loved the Gilligan's Island reference!
The Gilligan's Island joke had me in tears and I suspect I'll cry when people ask "who's Gilligan?"
I couldn’t stop humming the tune after the 3 hour tour reference.
What about the Gilligan's Island "three hour tour" quote? How could you miss that one?🤣😂😅
Interesting that some TV shows lasted for that long (but then, Betty Boop survived that long too).
It's also on the dedication plaque quote on the adrift USS Brittain in TNG episode "Night Terrors"

@@mbitetto67 I'm not sure if it's actually readable on screen, I know about it from reading Memory Alpha articles.
Glad I'm not alone in catching the Gilligans Island reference. It made me smile. Humor as foreshadowing!
Technically in the TOS third season episode "Is There in Truth No Beauty?" The USS Enterprise encountered the galactic barrier there as well .
Thank you for recently always sending your best wishes to everyone.
I'm glad the pace has picked up to the point where I can't wait for the next two episodes.

The Goonies references tied in a bow with Astoria, the filming location. Perfect.
Excellent review, but the best thing is...YOUR SHIRT!!
Kovich's "three hour tour" reference cracked me up.
The great barrier isn't to keep us in, it's to keep the Reapers out.
Great job Jeffery
Not even 30 seconds in and I gotta say: LOVE YOUR SHIRT!
Love the shirt man. Seriously cool.
It's eerie that Sally Kellerman died on the day "The Galactic Barrier" was released.
What are the odds if it turns out Tarka's friend is responsible for everything going on and creating an omega particle to attain their goals
It'll ruin it a bit imo
Just noticed Sean missed the TNG era commbadge, which I only noticed just now myself.
I thought that's what he was calling the "TOS" badge.

One thing that I think deserved a Down is that they managed to find an excuse to mute the colours in Discovery even further.
That's not an Enterprise era tricorder. It's an Enterprise era Communicator plugged into a Universal Translator.
