Love the shop tour. I'm in the process of insulating my garage and setting up a workshop to learn woodworking. I want french cleats on part of the wall. From what I can tell, you put plywood over your drywall where you have the cleats. Was this to protect the wall or make it stronger? Also, how thick is that plywood?
Hey Tony! Love the french cleat system and hope to do a video on mine and some holders soon. This was a great observation / question and I'm going to pin this in case anyone else has same question as I never addressed it in the video. The reason I used plywood over the drywall is because I have metal studs on the interior walls of my home. Im not sure about your area, but in mine, thats very uncommon for a home thats 40 years old. I bought these special metal stud anchors from Canada and put like 12 of them in and mounted the plywood to that. This way all my cleats are just attached into the plywood which is distributing the weight over the 4 x 8 sheet. I used 2 sheets of 1/2" plywood by the way for the wall and 3/4" for the cleats.

@@JoystickGeezer I think you'll find most people do as Bryan did, plywood over the drywall (or straight on studs in unfinished garages). French cleats have some sharp edges and are likely to dig into and scrape drywall as they are moved in / out and from side to side.

Earned a sub from me! There are soooo many things I love about your shop. The water heater french cleat cover, sanding 3d print trays, table saw blade holder oh my! And more! Really well done and good job putting yourself out there man. I would be too terrified/self conscious to do a video of my shop. I have a 1 1/2hp Grizzly dust collector. I'm using the Oneida cyclone and it works very well! I put it on one of those rubbermaid grey garbage cans with a lid. Insulation will help on the garage doors. I have two old single car doors, solid metal panel, they don't "roll". Probably the original from the 70s. I have a little laser thermometer I use for my RC Car engine. Pointing it at my garage door that does not have insulation vs the insulation, mid 90s when pointed at the bare metal vs high 70s when pointed at the insulation. Middle TN, about an hour South of Nashville. I bought a 4x8 sheet of the pink panther stuff and custom cut it. My shop is kept in the high 70s. Walk out basement shop, 600sq ft, I just tapped the AC to the house to pump a small vent into my shop. I have the same table saw and love it! I can rip right through 8/4 walnut all day. I also have the same Wen air filter. I've been watching the 3d handman a lot lately and I'm going to up my game on the ambient air filtration. I know it's a wood shop, but I can see dust all over everything, which is exactly what my shop looks like, which means there is dust all in my lungs. Wow thank you for your watch, sub, and kind words! This shop is really my happy place and I've learned so much from watching other shop tours that I wanted to contribute and share mine! Although I was very self conscious throughout filming and editing this, I really wanted to push myself. Thanks for recognizing that it wasn't the easiest thing to go! I will check out the oneida separator, I have the Rockler ones that work well on my dust extractor and in the workbench I may take one of those, the Jet one clogs literally every time I use it. Great call on the insulation board and I know it will make a big difference! Im on it! Looks like you could mount the the crank for the router lift on the inside the door to keep it handyer. Just an 💡 idea. Looks like you try and keep tools handy. But I know it is always a work in progress but you also gave me some ideas. Love the use of space.
Thats a great idea! I used to have it mounted to the dust shroud, the magnetic door with the holes, but the mounts broke off and I just never fixed it. Thanks for the reminder and the push to get back at it! Thanks for watching!
Excellent shop. My shop is also in a 2 car garage that has a seperate room for my dust collector and 2 big storage areas with doors. My shop is not near as neat as yours, but I do have a similar miter saw bench, and the drawers in my router table are like yours. Shops are great. I am currently building a "flip" cart for my sander/planer and an infeed table for the table saw. Thanks for the tour.

That's an awesome shop you got there. I also purchase the dust collector from Harbor Freight. Unfortunately it's still in the box. Waiting on permit and zoning from the city 😢 Not fun... Great tour. Found helpful how you organize your tool box, I'm always debating how to best utilize my tool boxes vs having having the tools accessible.. Other appreciated the level of detail. Wondering what you use the pipe for on the table. French cleat looks awesome.
Hey thanks for your kind words and feedback. I try to keep the tools I use most frequently on the wall and easily accessible, I still have more to add to the wall as its an always evolving project. Good eye on the pipe on my workbench. Thats part of a project I'm still working on but its for my camera. Its called a Woby Jig from Wobydesigns on youtube. I plan to have a few different pipes in the shop for the camera jig to slide onto. It will allow for quicker camera setup times in between shots as well as some better angles.
Very nice shop all around nice. When you go for the drill buy the table top drill press maybe Nova. I have the full size Delta its nice but over kill. Because we can hand drill, kind of makes the floor models unnecessary. I used to keep my planner and jointer separated but recently placed them side by side and it saved me space and dust collection worked better. Love the black wall contrast of the french cleats. Were did you get he holder for festool sander and the black holder for sand paper? Thanks for your ideas.
