Another great video. Regarding a ‘spade a spade’ probably also worth noting if your spouse wants to start a business instead of get a job. At least in our experience and a lot of others we’ve talked to. Starting a business ‘legally’ in Hawaii is not the easiest thing to do.
THIS is a great point! We should’ve gotten into that more in this video, but I feel this topic deserves a whole video by itself. Thanks for bringing this up!
Retired Military here. Commented on a previous video, about her childhood video in Pearl City. Thank you both for being postive informing us all. Appreciate it. Thank you
Back in the day (1960's) you could take ferry boat from Iroquois Pt. (Old Navy Housing for Barber's Point) housing at the end of Iroquois Drive and travel to Hickam AFB from EWA Beach.
Those placards are still posted up on the EOD landing side, the base ferry was discontinued many years ago but the best kept secret is that DOD ID card holders can apply for the permit to kayak across the Harbor entrance
We left/PCS in December of 1968. My Mom worked at the Hickam AFB Gas Station. They probably shut it down just before they shutdown Barber's Point. @@lzl3185
Thanks so much again guys for your non-stop flow of support - you two are the quintessential brother and sister to all of us looking to integrate in Hawaii. You do so in a way that also makes us aware of the local reality and motivates us to play a positive role - to be part of a rising tide to lift all boats 😊
Still?! Good to know these aren’t tall tales! It’s easy to imagine people still do that transit, especially when you compare travel distance and time on a map. Please share whatever details you can! How long does it take? Can anyone do it? Pros and cons. Launch and landing. Mahalo 🤙
Cuz, the kayak time across is about 4-15 minutes depending on your fitness and comfort in the water, or if a ship is inbound outbound. You have to have a DOD ID, either CAC or dependent, apply for kayak permit with base at building 150, wait 2weeks to 3 months for approval, call in to harbor tower when starting and ending transit, if not harbor patrol will stop you and ask for ID and permit, could end up with NJP for AD or base access restricted for civilians. Pros is that it’s fitness, outdoors, no traffic, on the water to start the morning, Cons kayaks are expensive to buy either new or used, maintenance can get costly, have to buy the saftey gear, paddle, carry permit in a dry bag, label kayak with permit number, if base is on lockdown even for drills you are not permitted to cross in either direction, more cons, there’s no shower except garden hose to wash down kayak and self, no toilet for #2 business. I kayaked for almost 2 years, used ti live at Iroquois Point Kapalina homes, it was fun and I enjoyed the experience of kayaking across the harbor, so many more to list, PM me if you want to know more
We are planning on moving back to Hawai'i next spring or summer we are selling our house just not sure if buying is right for us because of the costs of hawaii, have around 4k to spend can you get anything such as a house instead of a condo for this price 3bdr near the water/beach.
Thanks for this! (More PCS info videos, please?) EDIT: I agree about SF Bay waters being one of the roughest. I partially grew up in SF. (It's the topography underwater that makes it so.)
Moving to Hickam 1JUN23. What's the best way to reach you. We love the idea of AMR and base housing because the kids make so many friends on base but the water issue is a major concern.
Momilani elementary is the highest rated in the state I believe. My parents wanted me to go to PC vs where I was zoned for because they thought it would be better. I’d say average as far as Hawaii schools go

Does the army not give you BAH to cover for rent for apartments in Hawaii? Its actually crazy how many people need to pay out of pocket for rent, the army shouldn't allow that
Thanks for the comment. If what you're asking is "Does BAH cover renting apartments in Honolulu?" then the answer is most likely not, as the rental cost in town are typically higher than rental costs elsewhere.

We appreciate you, too 😁 We like to treat this channel as if we’re talking to our family, so your feedback means we’re doing something right. Mahalo‼️
I appreciate so much your transparency in everything. Mahalo
Keepin this real estate game real 🫡 We’re an open book.
From AZ myself!
Just got orders to Schofield.. we are way in deep on this move.
Pet agriculture check, no joke, start EARLY. The only stress for my move were pets. We did the work and waited the 30 days, and good to go. Whew.
Agree. Hawaiian is the best! Try their Mai Tai's on board! Its awesome.
Thanks for another great video.
I have a couple of coworkers that do kayak from Iroquois to JBPHH

Let’s jump on a consult and discuss your geographic areas of interest etc etc. short answer is yes :)

Kayaking across the harbor entrance from Lima to Alpha landing is a real thing, I’m still here in the shipyard, PM me if you want to know more

The housing area that you discussed that is near Dixie Grill is called McGrew Point and it is for O-4 and above.
Appreciate you for providing this info!
Just pcs'd to Oahu and we're moving to Pearl City but we've heard the schools aren't that great. Any opinions on the schools there?

@Moving to Hawaii thank you right now we're zoned for lehua but we're trying to decide whether to try to get a GE or continue home schooling.
Palisades Elementary also has a good rating.
Just started watching your videos, they’re so helpful! Do you guys have an Instagram page?
Im pcs ing there in December and i planing to buy home what is the first step I need to do?

PCS?
I just googled… Permanent Change of Station
Yep, you know how military loves acronyms. It’s common for PCS orders to be for 3 years at a time.
What about he single sailors PCSing 🥹
Depending on your preferences and pay/rank, town, downtown, Kailua…
