I am a Sikh, UK born and bred but you're correct, Sikhs originate from North India, mainly the Punjab region. The reason book uncle turned down your offer to buy him one is probably because he is Muslim. Muslims and Sikhs have almost alternate religious views. Sikhism itself was partly born out of rebellion towards Mughal rulers and laws. Great vids and you should definitely go check out Punjab for the full Sikh experience. Hospitality is second to none and many Sikhs still hold a strong relationship with Britain so you'll definitely spot some nuances. Also, the steel bangle is actually a weapon too, historically. They would have been a lot larger and almost wrapped around the arm like a shield. Although that would look badass probably not too practical haha

I'm not a practicing Sikh so I don't carry a sword (kirpan) but even most who do only carry a very small decorative one which is blunt or just a symbolic necklace etc. Within Sikhism we also have what are known as Nihang Sikhs. They learn the martial arts which our gurus and ancestors used. They are very strict Sikhs whereas I'm just Sikh by birth. I smoke, drink, eat meat and all that stuff. Technically Sikh's shouldn't eat meat but if they do we believe the life you take should be on your hands. Similar reason to why we don't eat Halal meat, we don't believe in taking a life in God's name. Again, doesn't stop me... I love my shwarmas too much haha
