    My mom and I were cackling so hard (in a "oh-no-poor-Chris" kind of way!) when you were buying the paper money and candles!! Hk-ers actually buy it quite often for loved ones who passed away; so it's not that bad but yeah definitely not a souvenir 😂. Love your HK series! 👍🏻

      @@Travelwithchris . I was cringing so hard. But I would keep it as souvenir. It's funny. . . if you're not superstitious. The emperor on the bills is the Chinese version of Hades.

      @@Travelwithchris Not just HK'ers, it's at least a tradition/belief of the Southern Chinese as we follow the same practices in the US, especially when it's Ching Ming, the Spring Festival where gravesite cleaning is done. Burning candles and incense is a way to let the spirits of our family members know that we are there to provide them offerings of money, and food (usually bring oranges, roast pork, dim sum, etc.) at their gravesite. Carrying that money is considered bad luck as it's for the dead, and Chinese culture frowns upon talking about or carrying any representations of the dead/death.

  • @elwynll
    @elwynll Рік тому +8

    Great video Chris! The incense is used for burning when praying/worship to deity's or past ancestors. The money is burned as it is believed the money goes to people who have passed and they can use it in the afterlife. The Jade pendants are usually gifts from family/relatives. Usually worn as jewellery with a gold chain or a red rope/string. They are worn for good luck/jewellery - people often get buddhas/deity, or their zodiac animal i.e dragon, snake, etc.

    Harbor Freight is a good store for tools, saved me so much money since I discovered it. We only go to home depot for things that aren't tools. I've literally bought every tool at harbor Freight the past 6 years or so, power drill, saws, car jack, a press, big air compressor, paint sprayer, sand blaster, trash cans, pressure washer and a ton of stuff you get the point and it saved me a lot of money since I'm not a contractor or anything like that the tools don't have to be the best out there and I'm glad I have that option now for more affordable tools.

    The ladies reaction when you showed her the paper money was priceless, she probably saw her whole life flash before her eyes. Just a bit about the money. The paper money is generally used during "Ghost month" in Chinese its Chung-Yuan 中元 its from Buddhism and Taoism beliefs. Its on the 15th lunar day of the 7th lunar month which is August 16, 2023. It can be used any time and they have more than copies of money, cars, watches, phones etc. Folklore says that some spirits may be restless and will have to be appeased, so, worshippers will burn paper money and make the usual offerings to make sure they are back in the good graces of their ancestors and any other wandering ghost that may happen to "drop by" and thats what ghost month is about. The dead souls before reincarnation are called ghosts. Most of them are jailed in hell. The folklore says the ghosts have one-month parole and will roam the towns in the 7th lunar month every year. People have better feasting on them. People are afraid that ghosts play trick-or-treat games, hence the name Ghost month".

    As someone from Hong Kong. If you ever go back to Hong Kong Chris. Just remember. Locals will generally tell you what you want to hear just to get a sale. Unfortunately Hong Kong has a high amount of dishonesty when it comes to local vendors if you're unable to communicate with them. It's not to say all but it's common place. The jade is likely 90% chance to be fake and no it won't provide you with good luck because it needs to go through a process of taken to a temple/priest to receive it's blessings to give good luck.

    the best time to come is X'mas or Chinese New Year, we will have many decorations both indoor and outdoor. For you, I guess you want to see the culture stuff so you may want to come during Chinese New Year but some shops will be closed for 1 day to 1 week (half of the restaurants are still open) because we have gathering with friends and family. On the 3rd or 4th day normally we have a big firework in Victoria Harbor (much fancier than the one in US). Majority of the famous street food will be closed. For the Jade that you bought, you may bargain with the guy and have some discount (bargain is not a practice here but he did over priced that piece) We Chinese do have many traditional things you need to aware of, like the money that your bought is for the decreased. June - Sept normally we will have lot of rain or sometime will have typhoon, weather is humid and hot here. During Spring time, Feb - March is very humid too. Next time when you come and if I have time, may let me know in advance so I can show you some of our culture.

    Understandable that this was a low key visit to the market. Most of that stuff is probably nothing you need and you have limited space. I personally don't purchase Jade at these markets as most of them are knock offs. I mean for $20 something, that one wasn't super expensive. But for me personally, I would stay away from buying jewelry. I recall buying a "Jade" neckless at a Chinese market in Australia once and when I brought it home it turned out to be a cheap painted piece of plastic with glue behind it. Ouch.
