Metallica is an American heavy metal band. The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and has been based in San Francisco for most of its career. The band's fast tempos, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. Metallica's current lineup comprises founding members and primary songwriters Hetfield and Ulrich, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine, who formed Megadeth after being fired from the band, and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted are former members of the band.
72 Seasons is the upcoming eleventh studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. It is set for release on April 14, 2023, by their own label Blackened Recordings. 72 Seasons is produced by Greg Fidelman, who produced the band's previous studio album, Hardwired... to Self-Destruct (2016), and will be the band's second studio album to be released through Blackened.

I think the important thing is the difference between something being overrated and overly liked. Some people may not like Metallica and that's fine, but their significance to metal and heavy music in general is so high that it's hard to objectively say they're overrated in being praised when so many people draw inspiration from them.

Definitely. I don’t think they are overrated. First of all it’s art and it’s really what you want to listen to. With their new album coming out, I’m seeing people that haven’t even heard the whole thing yet say the same old thing we’ve heard which is “they’ve suck since they put out the Black album” I’ve heard so many people write off this album in the two previous insane it’s not thrash metal but if you look at what the definition of thrash metal is these albums, check all those boxes. I’m not saying that 72 seasons or death Magnetic is just as good as master of puppets or anything like that, every artist has their prime where they write their best stuff. Do you ever hear anyone talk about any album pass the mid 90s being the greatest Slayer album ever? No.
I do think Metallica or underappreciated and I understand if someone doesn’t like the black album or whatever but you can’t deny what that album did for metal. It got a lot of people a lot of kids that weren’t into metal before but after they heard that album they got into Metallica and bought the first for albums, and they started getting into other bands like Slayer, Ozzy, Megadeth, Pantera etc.
I honestly don’t think there’s another band that has the microscope on them and gets nitpicked any more than Metallica does. You’re a regular old metal band that has about 1600 copies sold of their album but everyone swears that’s their favorite band, if they fuck up on stage, no one makes a big deal about it but if someone in Metallica fucks up on stage that that person is now the worst person ever to ever pick up that instrument. I would never see anyone has to like any band or any album but I wish metal fans did not have so much in common with Star Wars fans and realize if there’s a piece of entertainment you don’t want to enjoy then don’t listen to it. No one’s making anyone listen to anything at gunpoint.

There are so much great songs, like: hero of the day, mama said, bleeding me or until it speels on Load and ofc on Reload: memory remains, low man lirics (trully love this one), devil dance, better than you and ofc unforgiven 2. Still have no idea why ppl dont like those two so much. Love everything Mettalica done from killam all to s&m and most of those albums i know all words.

Personalmente A MI ¡NO!

I think the problem is the same problem that the music industry generally has. When a popular artist arises, the radio stations, the magazine's, the music journalists etc, all jump on that artist and blow them up. They get a much larger amount of time on radio and on TV. They get much more coverage on social media. And this sudden increase in exposure makes them significantly more popular which means more exposure and suddenly the artists are playing bigger venues live and being offered the best festival slots, which makes them more popular which increases exposure. And so on. I think of a radio station here in the UK, Capital FM. It's just the current top 10 tracks on repeat, all day. Like give another band a chance. And this is my problem with it. If it's popular, sure, give it more exposure. But don't forget about other bands. And it's frustrating because for me, looking at other similar bands in the genre, I prefer Megadeth, Slayer and Kreator to Metallica. I think they are all just as good and just as worthy as Metallica. But because Metallica got that exposure, they were catapulted to the top whilst Megadeth and Slayer were left behind. Our main rock festival in the UK repeatedly books Metallica to headline. Megadeth and Slayer never have and probably never will. Not when Metallica is around stealing the limelight. And Megadeth and Slayer are definitely worthy headliners. And it's not just Metallica. Sticking with Download Festival headliners. KORN will never get a chance because of Slipknot. Judas Priest always seems to come second fiddle to Iron Maiden. Bullet for my Valentine lose out to Avenged Sevenfold. And yet, I think KORN, Judas Priest and Bullet for my Valentine would be a perfectly good Download lineup. But this cycle of popularity boosted Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Avenged Sevenfold, deservedly, but also disproportionately leaving other hard working, worthy bands in the dust. So is Metallica over rated? YES. They are the biggest metal band, and deservedly so. But I think they are only fractionally better than their peers who need to work twice as hard to reap half the benefit. I think exactly the same of A7X, Iron Maiden and Slipknot. And I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan, I personally think they are 10x better than Metallica, but I also appreciate that they have been given so many advantages that other metal bands haven't had. And it's frustrating.

S&M is fantastic, and you can hear how James' voice shifted over the years, with his deeper voice the older songs (in my opinion) really soar. I would love to hear them re-record their first albums, I would honestly re-buy them if they did.

The interesting thing is a few key decisions in their career could've made them into truly "rated this highly for a reason" status. If Load and Reload had been consolidated into a single album of the best songs between the two, it would've been a respectable follow-up to the black album. Similiar thing with Hardwired and 72 Seasons, trim the fat and cut down all the songs by a few minutes. Better production and shorter songs on St. Anger and Death Magnetic. Just those few things and a lot less people would question why they have the reputation they do but there were a lot of headscratcher missteps throughout their career.

  • @julianfelton3068

Overexposed might be the better word and even then do I agree absolutely! But the framing here comes across like only listening to Metallica without a variety or information of other bands to enjoy as well. As a fan of a Metallica its not about liking everything its the fact of people nitpicking apart/comparing everything like children instead of enjoying the music. Obviously the 80's were the glory days but a continuation without any initial growth will land them I don't know either left in the dust as some of their peers were or just repetitive as Slayer who wore their sound out by the time of "World Painted Blood". Far as later albums their all great and while some songs I don't care that's to be expected. In the case of 72 Seasons as someone who has heard it it's a great album which varieties in style of thrashy to Black/very light Load with the modern production of the same producer of Death Magnetic and Hardwired.

Went to the listening party for 72 Seasons pre-release and while there are some standout tracks, sitting through 77 minutes of Metallica trying to prove a point was tough i have to say. I left feeling mentally exhausted, not uplifted as i hoped. Maybe it’s a grower? Time will tell. Laying out your soul and baring your emotions is, for James, some kind of catharsis by his own admission. But is it what the fans want? For me no. I agree that there are some absolute highlights along the way for Metallica but i wanted some kind of face melting experience, not an overblown riff fest that slowly reduces your ability to distinguish one track from the next. Was i disappointed? Honestly yes because it felt a bit emotionally draining. Rob tried to make some tracks relatable with his descriptions of the connections he feels to them, but i feel even he can’t see the woods for the trees. This album will come in a “blaze of hype” but i feel it will disappear even quicker.

The stuff from the 2000s and up are very decent (st anger needs a remastering without that eerie drum and it will be decent to others too. Also this album is the reason they still exist today) and outstand most of the music made in that era, even in rock. (I don't see lulu as a metallica album)
Are they as creative as in the 80s and 90s: no, but they have proven it all and now do the things they like. And they seem happier than ever, that is the most important.

I think I would rate them similar to The Rolling Stones- strong first 5-10 years, solid next 10 or so years where something they make cuts through the media clutter, an era of more forgettable/ poor music supported by touring, and then tying up the career with solid releases that usually don't cross too far out of the genre or fan base.
As to if they are overrated, I like your "slightly overrated" answer. Their first chunk of stuff is the stuff of legend and influence, and deserving all the praise. And everything after that dims their star a bit.
In their defense though, they did also do something that most bands of their stature do that most of them couldn't (Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Police, The Smiths, others)- stay mostly together with limited member rotation over the whole run time with no full break ups.
This doesn't make them a great or bad band, but it definitely adds a level of uniqueness that they have and most other bands don't. (Pantera, who it touring with them, is missing a couple of its essential core members)

While I definitely agree that they've had some misfires (Load and Reload should have been one album featuring the top 4-6 tracks from each), the stylistic shifts make them much more interesting when going album-to-album than a lot of other bands that kept the same style too long.

So they released 4 ( maybe 5 depending on your black album opinion) of the best metal albums ever. One after an other. In under 10 years.
What other bands have done this or come close to it?
Metallica is my life but I hold my hands up and admit some albums are well below par. When you set yourself such a high standard it's near impossible to retain that.
For that reason and what they have done to inspire other bands that I love , I would never say they are overrated.
What they have done for music and how they have been a gateway to other heavier bands for so many people including myself is incredible.
I hated metal until I heard the black album , now I love all the great metal bands and YES that includes Megadeath!!😂
Respect your opinion and enjoyed your video mate. Everyone has different views, makes life interesting. 🤘

I think the question needs to be broken down a bit more in order for a proper answer because there are a lot of variables to consider. The late virtuoso Cliff Burton. The legendary status of their first 4 albums. The massive pop culture success of the black album. Their down to earth and relatable lyrics. James Hetfield, riff legend and overall cool guy. Lars Ulrich, the so-so drummer whose arrangement skills are completely underrated and whose vision of the band was unrelenting to the point of success. Jason Newsted, the ball of energy that made live shows a spectacle. ALL of the controversy that kept them in the spotlight, even in tough times. Their honesty. Their longevity. Their influence. Their singles. Their live shows. Their iconic name. All these considered, I think the answer is, no, they're not overrated. Some people would argue they're not technical enough to be great, or they're not talented enough, or they've put out one too many dud albums. This is, of course, all subjective, but typically when a career spanning over 4 decades with multiple awards and recognitions coupled with an enormous fanbase with the ticket sales to prove it, it's not a stretch to say they deserve their icon status

And I think you're way off on Metallica fans in general. They're just like Star Wars, they either love it or hate. Hell, I spend 8 hours in line with a Metallica fan who think they sold out whenever they did a video for "One", said everything after Puppets "sucks", but yet was spending 8 hours in line for a show lol

I'm not exactly on your side, with this, BUT, I think you present your case well. Either, You and I have a slightly different criteria for being 'overrated', or our respective experiences within, and our impressions of, the 'Metallica' fanbase have been noticeably different. In 'my' experience, unlike other Rock/Metal fanbases. Metallica Fands don't tend to try and argue that they are the best musicians, Most will outright admit the various technical shortcomings, (particularly with Lars and occasionally Kirk). The reason why Metallica is as big as they are is that they have managed to attract the demographics of lay listeners that could give a crap less about bandmembers' names or any other details about them past "Hey, I like this song". Not only that, but they've managed to make the right moves to maintain the attention of 'that' unfathomably MASSIVE group, of all ages, for decades. There is no 'overrating' that feat. It's the goal of most musical acts in ALL genres, a 'holy grail'. I'm not denying that your argument has merit. I have come across the occasional 'Obsessed' fan, but most of the 'obsessed fans' I see, stalking Metallica videos are usually, like, Megadeth fans who want to attempt to troll. Other than them, they are usually people who have enjoyed Metallica songs for years, or are going to their first Metallica show, some young kid wanting to learn something on guitar, etc... Whether they are technically impressive to you, or not, their songs do all the right things, at the right time to hook the usually non-musician listener (For usually 5-9 minutes or more, which is itself, a feat for the mainstream) and have staying power. That, to me, as a musician for over 20-years, makes them 'not overrated' but truly 'great'.

    Yes.
While the band have grown and recorded some amazing work, while being an intensive live performing juggernaut, their commonly cited strengths are often attributable to the smallest handful of their works: RTL/MOP/B.A. Classic albums, but for a Diamond-selling band who have stood the test of time, why aren't people talking about Load/ReLoad some more? Why was Death Magnetic praised to the high heavens upon release, only to be the album that is continually eclipsed by the above-named classic albums?
I love Metallica. But, they're essentially a legacy act once the new material is more than two years in age - that is, until the next record. There's SO MUCH more i'd love to hear them play live outside of the first five albums.

And nowadays they shifted from major music influence to major business influence. is the upcoming tourconcept (2 days, no repeats) done before? And for example: I think "through the never" was fantastic (was it Cliff's soul in the bag, needed "to be Metallica at all"?) I love them, and their ideas overall. sometimes it bombs, sometimes it doesn't. Legendary band that unfortunately overstayed its welcome. If you want to feel the vibe of where the band are. See them live and say to yourself am I here to hear master of puppets or the new songs. I don’t think they’re overrated. I honestly think they might be overhated. Being slightly older than the band itself (I was born two years before they formed) I’ve lived through seeing them getting backlash for pretty much everything they did. The Black Album was “too pop” and they got a lot of crap for cutting their hair for Load. Obviously, St Anger got a lot of, admittedly deserved, hate too.
It seems to me that people have too high expectations of them but they have always followed their muse and mostly made good music. Even if they never made another “Ride the Lightning” or “Master of Puppets” they have made plenty of good music and have continually put on great live shows.

I was going to make a very long comment but I'm going to summarize it: I don't think they are overrated because three of the same people who play today did immense things, and not only musically, in their first 5 albums. No one who is overrated can achieve that. But in the same way its "low" points are several. Metallica is one of my favorite bands and although I enjoy everything they did (except Lulu xD) there's a lot of Load, Reload, St Anger and Hardwired stuff that does not gets to me practically at all. Death Magnetic on the other hand seems wonderful to me. Neither those who put them as gods nor those who tear them down as the worst are right. They are just such a big band that they generate very strong feelings. Greetings, thanks for the video!

I read the name of this video and started typing here prior to watching any of it. Yup, I'm impartial on this one. Metallica is NOT overrated. However, I will leave this comment unposted until I watch the video in case there is compelling evidence that they are...
I'm back... And your argument is not necessarily wrong... I'm going to throw a disclaimer here that you should forward to the TL;DR below for the summation.
...And I think you were talking specifically to me when you said that (paraphrasing) some Metallica fans hold the music they released in that first decade in such high regard that we'd give them a pass on everything that happened from the Black album on. For me, you're not entirely wrong.
I had just turned 9 years old when Kill 'em All was released and in a home where we only listened to country music, so I wasn't in at the start. My first listen was from a copy of a copy of a copy of Master of Puppets when I was around 12 years old. I was floored. I went back to grab their prior albums (I was still mostly into vinyl at the time) and loved every song.
When Justice came out and the video for "One" started getting a lot of airplay on MTV, I was all kinds of stoked. It tells a great story and got Metallica into the mainstream, but it missed some of the best stuff of Metallica. Even on the same album, "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" and "Dyer's Eve" were my jams.
When the "Black" album came out, I was way into "My Friend of Misery" and "The God That Failed" more than other songs, with "Sad But True" and "Holier Than Thou" coming in right behind. I wasn't as in to the "radio-friendly" stuff as much as I was into the rest of it. I don't know if that was just me (and an honorable mention to "Of Wold and Man" for having a guitar hook that I spent a ridiculous amount of time learning how to play).
The 12 months starting with the release of the Metallica Black album (8/12/91) were IMHO the best 12 months that metal has ever experienced. 3 other albums released between 8/12/91 and 8/11/92 are: Ozzy Osbourne - "No More Tears" - 9/17/91, Pantera - "Vulgar Display of Power" - 2/25/1992, and Megadeth - "Countdown to Extinction" - 7/14/1992. If you are watching this video and don't own at least 3 of those 4 albums, you're doing life wrong.
"Load" and "Reload" were pretty terrible to me when I heard them for the first time. I don't think I was ready for country ballads from Metallica when they were released. They have grown on me, at least certain songs. I really like "The Thorn Within" now, but it wasn't Metallica at the time.
After those albums (Load and Reload)... It got ugly. "St. Anger" was... well... it was... That is the one Metallica album that I don't have any physical copy of. I'm certain I have a digital copy of it on some platform or other, but there's no reason I would ever want to verify that.
Death Magnetic seemed like a full-on over-correction to me. It was like: Look, we can still play fast as hell, worship us! That one fell pretty flat. Fast as fuck and I can't fault it, but very pedestrian for a Metallica album.
Hardwired... To Self-Destruct was different though... "Halo on Fire" is far and away my favorite thing Metallica has done in the last 25-ish years. The guitar-work, the melody, the slight hint of something coming... The video that accompanies it makes it even better. That's some good stuff.
    TL;DR
Metallica is definitely not overrated, but their early music set a bar so high that even they can't achieve it again. Those over 40 will hammer the table and say they haven't done anything good since the 80s (maybe early 90s) and those who are under 40 probably think they're just another band that puts an album out every few years -indistinguishable from the other acts they're familiar with. Hell, I just spent about 700 words doing my own version of that same thing.

I won't say that they're perfect, or that they haven't made missteps. Of course they have. But at the same time, I still find it really difficult to consider them as 'overrated', purely because the scope of their influence due to their early output is _so_ massive. There are very few metal bands with a name recognition or a legacy as wide-reaching as theirs (Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are the only three that come to mind). In the 80s, they were the gold standard for thrash as a subgenre. And from a personal standpoint-- Metallica _was_ my own gateway into heavy metal. A friend of mine in high school got me to listen to _Master of Puppets._ I was instantly a fan, and have been for decades now.
Whatever the quality of their work may be presently-- and I do try to approach their more recent work with objectivity and honesty-- I feel they've already cemented their importance in the genre's history, and it's virtually unimpeachable.

I'm still standing by what I originally said in the prelude to this full video being released.
They are not overrated in general.
Hugely overrated in the genre they originated in, however. Most thrash metal bands will age like fine wine (Death Angel, Testament, Overkill) and other bands will meet very up and down patterns (notably the Big Four and especially Metallica/Megadeth). Metallica may have been the most commercially successful of the bunch, but they distanced themselves from their roots overtime and are just mostly seen as another metal band in that mold. Just a big successful one at that.
But yeah once they entered the 90s, they've passed that thrash metal torch onto the other bands who're still carrying it to this day.
I like them still as a band, but people forget that it's entirely subjective about how they see Metallica as a band. I'll consider Metallica better than a good 40% of Metal music that's put out today. But when people think they're going to say that Metallica is better than Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Judas Priest .etc then that's when I'll call bullshit and put them more or less equal.

His solos just became "stock", "cliche" wah wah wailings that were thin in tone, rushing to the finish line, and lacking the charisma needed to match the intensity of James' riffs. I thought Kirk was quite good through the Black album but from Load on I've always felt a better lead guitar player would have greatly improved the band's sound.

Even though I do genuinely enjoy a couple songs off St. Anger, I feel that was their first real misstep. But when you consider them as a whole, the band is more than just their successes and failures. They've shown as long as a you have a good ear for music, you can get out there and start making it. They've shown they know how to adapts with the changing genre, too many people accused them of "selling out" when they were just staying relevant, something many of the metal bands of the 80's failed to do as we got further and further into the 90's. Metallica didn't just sit back and rely on playing the same old hits over and over, and again in their second decade as a group, they still managed to put out quality singles. No, the albums from beginning to end were not as good as the first 5, but there was a solid 20-ish year period where even bad Metallica was still good shit. But again, in closing I do see where you're coming from with how people treat them like they can do no wrong. So I can't fault you for your train of thought.
