- In this video I have included buying tips for BMW I8 and what you should know before you buy one.
What should I look out in a used BMW I8?
it’s worth checking the wheels for scrapes and scratches, looking for any bodywork damage around the doors, which require a lot of space to open and ensuring the tyres are in good condition with plenty of tread remaining.
Sometimes you get warning lights, it tends to be for isolated cases rather than any faults that are common to all i8s
I started to get the hang of climbing in and out of the car by the end of the week I spent with it, but it still wasn’t simple. Part of the problem is that the sills are so wide and the seats are so low. You kind of have to duck beneath the door and also slide across the sill and land in the seat simultaneously
I know it sounds ridiculous, but trust me, the i8 is really all that. From this point of view it’s up there with the Porsche 918 Spyder, the Ferrari LaFerrari and the McLaren P1. Just like people surround those cars in the parking lot, it’s the same with the i8.

You don’t have to change the battery after 7 years 😆 In cell sections anyway so can just change one.
Mine is nearly 9 years old and still exactly the same range. It’s not an EV and self charging so you just don’t worry about it. Only a small range of around 15 miles on full EV anyway.
Had mine 5 years, no major issues and best car I’ve had.
You also don’t change the hinges 😆 just the damper if it gets weak otherwise no.
It’s the cheapest to run performance car there is IMO. Go for it!
Hello I’m considering a 2019 roadster but worried of major repairs! What year was yours and did you buy it brand new and how many miles did it stay good to you.
I bout mine at about 3 years old with 18k miles and had it for 5 years to 30k miles. Get a good warranty if worried. Only had my heater replaced under original purchase warranty. I’d say just check that (all EV’s suffer here) and maybe check the air on works ok. They were way ahead of their time and still look fresh . A lot of car for the money and nice that not a lot are about! Don’t get too hung up about the battery.
I heard if you drive it in sport mode it charges the battery
I measured the max. capacity of the battery in my six year old i8 with 60‘000 miles lately (in the secret menu) and it’s still 100%. In my i3 with same age and only 25‘000 miles there is only 93% left. I guess that is the known aging effect of fast charging, which cannot happen with the i8.
Happy we have a general 100% insurance coverage of windshield crackings here in Switzerland, even though I never had this damage yet.

I wish that's the case with the battery and I hope I never have to change it .Our insurance in Ireland doesn't cover the windshield unfortunately .

Hi Tom can you tell me where is the secret menu from the i8? I would also like to find that out.
I know this two guidelines out of goingelectric.de forum, one in English and one in German (use at your own risk, but for me it worked fine with i3 and i8)
English:
1. Press and Hold Trip Rest Button for a few second
2. Press the trip button until you reach option 4 “Lock”
3. Press and Hold until you see “Number”
4. You will need to calculate your number. Add up the last five digits of your VIN, this is your Number. Then cycle through the numbers until you reach your number. Then press and hold.
5. Cycle through the options until you reach option 13. Then press and hold.
6. Press the trip reset button repeatedly until you reach number 9 for SOC or 10 for kWh.
German:
1. Den Tageskilometerknopf solange drücken, bin ein Servicemenü kommt (01, 02...). Falls die "Rücksetzanzeige" für Bremsflüssigkeit kommt: Wagen aus und wieder anschalten und erneut anfangen.
2. Den Tageskilometerknopf dreimal kurz drücken, so dass der Menüeintrag "Entriegeln" erscheint.
3. Den Tageskilometerknopf solange drücken, bis dort "Code" steht.
4. Die letzten fünf stellen der VIN addieren. So oft den Tageskilometerknopf drücken, bis hinter "Code" das Ergebnis der kleinen Rechenaufgabe steht. Dann den Tageskilometerknopf gedrückt halten, bis man wieder im vorherigen Menü ist.
5. Neue Menüeinträge sind freigeschaltet: Den Tageskilometerknopf so oft drücken, bis man das Menü 13 erreicht.
6. Den Tageskilometerknopf wieder lange drücken. Im Untermenü so oft kurz den Tageskilometerknopf drücken, bis man "9" für SOC oder "10" für kWh erreicht.

Spark plugs OK
If you want to do it yourself there is no way to reset the service in the display. So I have to have it done according to BMW.
You can only reset the oil change yourself.
Can your information also help here?
In general, when you are about to put a youtube video out there, I would recommend to do a little bit more research. First of all you are not right about the battery. The charging of the battery is dependent on a lot of things, like driving mode, charging settings, battery settings driving style and so on. Then the sound. You give the impression that the sound is purly artificial, which is not the case. The sound of the car completely without any artificial modification is actually not that different. And BTW, M3, M4 and so on, also put some sound in the speakers internally, so it is a bit of the same. And then the drifting. It is absolutely possible to drift, so what you say is misleading. The monocoque of the car is carbon fiber. The outside details are plastic. One of the most important reason why BMW don't want you to open the bonnet, is that you might access some of the high voltage parts........ which can harm you pretty bad....... or kill you. The rest make more or less sense.
Have one 7 months now and the only problems is the fuel flap, the switch that release the flap doesn't work and its a problem with all of the i8s ah thats it really.brill car wife loves it and yes its out of warranty but 170e road tax and 426e fully comp insurance happy days just waiting until i have to bring it to joe duffys for a service then we see 😮
How much was the fuel flap? I’m considering a 2019 roadster I’m doing research and would like to hear why problems may occur and what to expect to pay
Didn't cost anything it was a DIY job.
But I did have a big problem with the vanos system 4 months ago and that was a engine out job and very expensive as I got the turbo replaced aswell, so was it worth it I say yes I'm keeping the car as there is nothing like it out there and just looks cool.
@@Jessica-cn1lc The fuel flap only opens when the pressure in the fuel tank is safe as they act differently in a hybrid. After a long trip, it can take 20 seconds to open and some cars have had a problem with the sensor. If this happens, there is a pull cord in the boot to release it. I used it a couple of times but generally wasn’t an issue.

It’s nonsense, even the damper isn’t expensive. Mine is 9 years old and not had any of the things mentioned. It’s a well made thing.
He means the gas strut they recommend replacement every 40k, but they look very good quality

Does anyone know how to remove the front and back emblems on an i8? Is the blue ring around the emblem attached?

i8 charges has the ability to charge itself in sport mode.
The box he is talking about gives you 3 phase supply allowing you to charge faster. single phase is only 3Kw

I just bought from 2016, so 8y/ battery is great condition- i can still go 24-28km.

We purchased a 2016 i8 in March of 2019. We made sure to put an extended warranty on it. Had one major repair that was not covered by BMW as it was "wear and tear" supposedly; the left rear strut failed and leaked everywhere over a few weeks. It was about $2k USD to fix; quite frustrating with a full warranty. We just sold it last week.
fromy your 3 year ownership how would you describe the market value change. is it worth buying and enjoying for a while and when time to move on cash out be reasonable?

Fair play to you man I was trying to figure out the accent then I looked at the numberplate I knew there was an Irish twang happening what’s it like for insuring over here? And do we get any government grants like the UK? Also it’s made from some sort of reinforced carbon plastic parts of it? Is that a good thing?
The insurance is crazy how expensive it is in Ireland and the tax that's why you don't see many big engine cars in Ireland because the bigger the engine the more tax you pay .There is one government grant for the charger to be installed in your house for the i8 I think its 2000 euro they give you .They tried to be eco friendly with the carbon plastic parts and no they aren't good lol . Do you own an I8 or interested in them ?Thank you for watching !

Hi welovefais BMW i8 2014 have issues as I have heard because it is the first production I would fully recommend to get 2015 and up up and for 50k euros you should easily get one from the UK at that price as I have got one for a friend and last week for 47 k

The High-Voltage Battery is 6.300 Euros in Germany which is a quite reasonable Price; 160.000 Km Warranty is also a nice figure.
Getting in and out is no Problem and its worth the Struggle for getting those wonderful Scissor-Doors.
Leaning out of the Window is not a Point for me, never done that with none of my Cars; Question of Style maybe haha.

The cabin of this car is built of carbon fiber the seal of the car us really thick making the doors small so the windows cant really fully got down
