  • This is a short video showing how we tracked down yet another battery drain on our R230 Mercedes SL 55 AMG. Once again we used a thermal imaging camera to quickly find the fault, but on this occasion, fixing it proved unnecessary. Simply removing the appropriate fuse and rebooting the module seemed to cure the problem in the short term.

      Thanks for your comment. IF it was the phone module causing the drain, you might find that removing the fuse has cured the problem....at least temporarily. It could of course also be a problem with your Command not shutting down, Sometimes you can diagnose this by setting up an iPhone camera on a tripod and filming both the front dash and then the CD changer in the back and seeing if they do indeed shut off after 20 minutes - you'll hear it on the sound track of the video. Hi - what model car do you have and what year. In the R230, F76 generally controls the now obsolete "telephone systems/emergency" call. In other cars F76 is the vacuum pump relay fuse. Does your car have any faults or problems showing uip as a result of this fuse blowing? Mike

    • @MikesMercsandothercars
      @MikesMercsandothercars  Рік тому

      @@benaiahmusic Hi - so if I understand you correctly, you put a new fuse 76 in, turn on the car and it blows straight away?
      If that is the case, I would say the most likely scenario is that you have damp/moisture/corrosion in one of your connectors.
      Did any thing happen or get changed prior to this problem - eg I was driving in a thunder storm...I moved a seat...I opened the trunk etc etc
      1. Check under the seats - any moisture or damp?
      2. Open both doors and check for signs or wear on any of the wires or contacts
      3. Check the front grill drain hole is clear. Sometimes the drain plug gets clogged and this fills up with water and overflows onto fuses and electrics. See my SL55 drain hole video.
      Other than that, you might have to get an auto electrician to trace the fault. The thermal imaging camera might help to identify what gets hot just before the fuse blows.

    • @MikesMercsandothercars
      @MikesMercsandothercars  Рік тому

      Thanks for your comment. Yes the CTEK trickle charger is a great solution for those with access to power. My garage is remote and doesn't have power unfortunately so a trickle charger is not an option.
      In my experience, many of the consumer batteries in the R230 are knackered because they have been left for a period of time at below 11.8 v which quickly causes sulphation.
      I have also come across numerous cases where people have a parasitic draw without realising it - they just assume that the consumer battery runs down quickly. A good AGM battery with an 'in spec' draw lasts 2 -3 weeks.
      I'm working on a lithium battery solution which integrates with the BCM and alternator. That is what this car needs...and what be installed if it was designed today. Mike

      @@jgonzalesm6 That is a lovely car and what low mileage! A battery conditioner permanently connected is definitely the way to save a fortune on replacing consumer batteries.
      Many people make the mistake of letting that battery run down and then trying to recharge it by driving round the block. The alternator is not designed to charge flat batteries...that is what external battery chargers are for. Mike

      Hi sorry to read you are having battery drain problems. Several battery drain issues are not fused. Let me know if you have:
      1. Checked the that the glove box light is going out when glove box is closed.
      2. Whether you have a phone charging cradle in the centre console.
      3. Have any additional blue tooth devices been added?
      4. Anything not working as it should - eg seat heaters etc
      In my limited experience, a fast way to find a parasitic draw is to fully charge the consumer battery, leave the car over night and pont a thermal imaging camera at various modules and areas of the car. You can get relatively inexpensive ones that plug straight into a smart phone....maybe treat yourself this Christmas?
      The first thing to check might be that your consumer battery actually holds charge. Charge it up to 12.7v (out of the car), leave it for a few hours and see if the voltage has dropped. Remember that 12.2V is 50% discharged and 11.8 is fully discharged.
      Where are you based?
