I've been making my own for a few years now, almost same design, just using materials from the hardware store (plastic plant saucer that I cut to insert a pool filter basket and pvc pipe). I also add fertilizer down the pipe. When I dismantle the pots at end of season, the plant roots stretch 26" right down the soil tube. Amazing to see how these roots search out nutrients.
The pots are full when the little overflow hole spits out a bit of water. We simply keep them topped up once a week when we dead-head, clean them up, and talk to them:) ~ In zone 5 you’ll want to store them out of the weather, but with an Aquapot, the soil becomes solid healthy deep roots so there will be no “soil” left to re-use. Pulling the “root cube” out is quite simple in the fall, with the pot on its side, and then up north we put them under a porch, in a shed or garage. ~ happy gardening!
I would love to see more videos on Mackinac Island. The garden tours on your channel are awesome, but what I would love even more is to hear you talk about how to design gardens. Your designs are so good. My favorite is the side yard of the house right next to the Grand Hotel. I've watched that video over and over.
Garden Answers has videos with Jack on Mackinac Island on UA-cam. Mr Barnwells landscaping is amazing. Him and his team does awesome work. You will enjoy them. And you can also look for videos about the Island on UA-cam. Just look up Mackinac Island.
May I suggest that you create pots with college colors when you sale your pots in college towns. For example in Columbus Ohio, be sure to use cardinal red pots and/or light gray pots or cardinal red & light gray pots. Companies have been trying to sell off-color red pots here & they don't sell. Look at the college colors. We also have Capital University here. I think their colors are gold and purple. I'm not sure, you will have to do that research. We also have Columbus State Community College - they have their colors. A lot of adults, gardners here, graduated from those schools. If you sell in college town you need to look at those College colors. I'm trying to help you with your sales. No other company seems to have grasped this concept. I love your product. Good luck with your new UA-cam channel.
Jack, is there some way to determine the amount of slow release fertilizer for each size of pot. Another way of asking this would be to tell us how much water each size pot holds. I have received my first shipment of sixteen blue pots and want to package the pot, the soil and the fertilizer for my clients.
Jack Barnwell Design Thanks. Espionage says you should not mix it with water. Is there a difference between their slow release fertilized vs. Proven Winners?
Any comparisons of plants in several planters after a season with aquapot and without to see the difference it actually gives? These were tested right? So that information should be available if they are better...
Yes, we have been trialing and working on Aquapots for 6 years. We have several trials and photos of side by side comparisons, I tried to copy and paste one here, but can not, but I would be happy to email you some...
The best way we have found is to simply top them up once per week. That advice works for all sizes and it is best to soak the pot in well and top up the tank... besides, visiting your plants for a little deadheading, checking in, and talking with them is always a good way to spend a sunday evening.... Some people use a dowel to check the level, but it is best to keep them topped up weekly, rather than wait until it is totally empty or even close... since that timing will vary depending on temps, wind, day length etc.
hi Jack - i can't seem to find anyone in the Portland, OR area that carries these... i called BFG Supply and they said they don't distribute to the west coast, however, i see a distributor in Pasco, WA... several hours away... any ideas on where they might be available in my area would be appreciated. Thanks.
@UCif7Yj_IOhLLMc3KkmALSwA yes that's the link i looked at earlier with the closest dealer several hours away, so i'll have to wait for on-line ordering... will that be through Proven Winners, or Michael Carr? thanks
Thank you

Zone 5 MA will I need to bring the pots inside during Winter?
Can I use any type of plant in these pots even the ones that don't like there roots to set in water all the time
Yes- the plants that like more water send roots deeper- toward the top is drier~
Beautiful pots. Can you tell me the size of the one you used? Thank you
That is a large “broad vase”
The size is about 20” diameter, and 32” tall-
How would dwarf fruit trees do in these aqua pots?

We do two scoops of fertilizer in the tank no matter the size!

@@JackBarnwellDesign How much soil is enough? After I placed the aquapot insert in my medium size urn, there isn't much space for soil. Please help.
Great pots. Its Hard to know when the reservoir is low on water. May I suggest a clear stripe on the side of the pot to see the water level..

hmm maybe you can use a skinny object to stick inside the tube that run down into the water.
