- An Artist of the Floating World (1986) is set in post-World War II Japan, where the older generation is still grappling with their country's immediate past and its current position as an occupied nation. Masuji Ono is an aging artist who needs to reckon with his own past while trying to live an ordinary life as a widowed father and grandfather.
An Artist of the Floating World is the second novel by the Nobel Prize-winning Japanese-born British author Kazuo Ishiguro.

I love this novel. Ishiguro is one of my favorite novelists but I have to ration my reading of his work as each one leaves me so gutted and it takes me a very long time (and a fair bit of courage) to begin the next one. I still have a few more to read, but this is one that’s stayed with me the most.
